Campbell wins second straight weight throw title

Colome High School graduate Matthew Campbell, a thrower for Doane University, claimed the NAIA indoor weight throw national championship for a second consecutive year on March 4 on the campus of South Dakota State University.

Campbell, who now calls Ainsworth, Neb., home, was seeking to become the first repeat champion in the men’s NAIA weight throw since 2017.

Campbell won the event with a throw of 68 feet-7.25 inches to open the final round. The throw was his third personal best of the day.

Campbell, who previously competed for Dakota Wesleyan University, won the national title in 2021 with a throw of 66 feet, 7 inches.

Campbell’s victory gave Doane their first two time champion in the weight throw and gave the Great Plains Athletic Conference its 11th weight throw national title.

Competing on March 5, Campbell was also in the shot put posting a throw of 53 feet, 7 inches, missing out on All-American honors by one place with a ninth place finish.

Ownership changes at Ford store

Cody Haiar has purchased Harry K Ford. The purchase was effective Feb. 25. He also purchased the paint and body shop. The NAPA store will remain independent.

Haiar is also the owner of Frontier Motors of Winner.

The Ford business will be known as Frontier Motors Ford and Frontier Motors Paint and Body will be the new name of the body shop.

The hours for the sales staff will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The service hours will  be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Haiar explained all 18 employees of the Ford store and body shop were retained.

The three salesmen for the  Ford store will be Roger Farley, Kirk Bainter, sales manager and Aaron Torres who comes to Winner from Vern Eide in Mitchell.

“Winner will be stronger if we have two separate dealerships,” said Haiar .

The owner explained he was surprised when Doug Knust called and asked if Haiar would look at buying him and his minority partner. Knust was the previous owner of what was then Harry H Ford. 

“We met and were able to get an agreement,” said Haiar.

“I am excited about owning the Ford store here. It is a great brand and Ford is engrained in American culture,” said Haiar.

The owner of the car dealership came to Winner in November 2010 and started working for Darrel Kaiser at Frontier Motors. On Dec. 1, 2015, Haiar purchased Frontier Motors.

The staff at Frontier Motors totals 30.

One of the changes at Frontier Motors is they brought in Jared Dewaard who was an executive manager at Vern Eide in Mitchell.

Dewaard will be the general sales manager at Frontier Motors. Haiar says Dewaard will help the business grow and expand its footprint.

“We hope folks in Winner and the area will give us a chance if they are looking to buy a vehicle. We will never make them pay more to buy locally. We want an opportunity to service them at the highest level,” he said.

Shana LaRae Kaupp, 40

Shana LaRae Kaupp, “Bombshell”, age 40, of Flandreau, SD, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Shana was born on Jan. 17, 1982 to John Kaupp and Julene Lupkes in Omaha, NE. She spent her early years in Gregory, SD and then moved to Colome, SD. Later, she moved to Flandreau with her mother where she attended Flandreau Public School. Shana later attended Sinte Gleska University for Human Services.  Shana had several jobs over the years but her favorite was spent as the host supervisor for the Royal River Casino  and Hotel in Flandreau.

Shana danced through life and lived it to the fullest.  She loved cats, cooking, music, and entertaining her family and friends.  She also enjoyed shopping, traveling, and pampering herself with a fresh manicure. Shana was unconcerned with what others thought of her and always encouraged people to be their authentic selves. She was comfortable in her own skin and was a strong advocate and leader for the LGBTQ+ community.

Shana is survived by her mother, Julene Lupkes, Colome; sisters: Stacia (Jason) Paulson, Colome; Dana Ellwanger, Flandreau; and Chelsea Lupkes, Huron, SD; 10 nieces and nephews; 3 great-nieces and nephews; and many other extended relatives and friends.

Shana was preceded in death by her father, John Kaupp; sister, Erika Kaupp; great-nephew, Colten Bobeldyke; and grandparents: Oswald and Ellen Kaupp, Stanley Pitsenberger, and Blanche Hiller-Taylor.

Funeral services were held  at 10 am on Monday, March 14, 2022 at Eastman Hall, Flandreau, with burial in the Colome Cemetery, Colome, SD at a later date. An all-night wake service began at 7 pm on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Eastman Hall, Flandreau. Arrangements by Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau. www.skrochfc.com

Betty Jean (Larson) Talbott, 96

Betty Jean (Larson) Talbott passed away on March 8, 2022 at Dougherty Hospice House.

A prayer service was  held at Miller Funeral Home at 507 S. Main Ave. in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, March 15 at 10am.

She was born on Sept. 6, 1925 to Joseph and Kathryn (Peters) Larson in Highmore, SD. Betty grew up in Colome, SD and graduated from Colome High School. She later attended The University of Nebraska.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Sidney Talbott on Aug. 21, 1951. They lived in Winner, SD for the 54 years of their marriage.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, SD and DOE of the Elks Club. She was a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Her passion was music. In her earlier years, she enjoyed singing in a mixed quartet, playing the piano and clarinet, tap dancing, and playing bridge. She and Marvin enjoyed dancing and traveling.

Betty is survived by her niece Kim (Bob) Kinney of Kannapolis, NC and her nephew Scott (Sheila) Schumacher of Surrey, BC, Canada, a great niece, Rebecca Kinney of Winston-Salem, NC, and three great nephews: Justin Kinney of Knoxville, TN, Dane Schumacher, and Dashel Schumacher, both of Surrey, BC, Canada.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, and her parents.

The family appreciated  the caring staff at Touchmark at All Saints where she resided for close to twenty years and the compassionate staff at Dougherty Hospice House, both of Sioux Falls, SD. They would also like to express heartfelt appreciation to Joyce Sisson for her loving devotion and attentive care for Betty during her final six years. Memorials may be directed to Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.

Chili cookoff winners

Colome FFA won the award for the most unusual chili in the Colome Chili Cookoff. The FFA is pictured with two members of the sophomore class who also entered the contest. Pictured from left are Jack Anderson, Raylynn Dehning, Joseph Laprath and Klayton Heath.

The Colome American Legion and Lariat Loopers 4-H Club hosted the Colome Chili Cookoff on Feb. 26.

Eleven groups brought soup and chili with the crowd voting on the best tasting.

Chosen as the best tasting was Shippy Stitches and Shippy Cattle Co.

The best other went to Zion Lutheran Church. The hottest chili went to Border  Bumpers 4-H Club and the most unusual went to Colome FFA.

Other contestants included: Colome sophomore class, Robin Nelson family, Lariat Loopers 4-H Club, First Fidelity Bank of Colome, Dan’s Last Shot, Annette Musser family and Colome American Legion.

Over $600 was raised for Colome youth programing.

Late game push falls short for Lady Warriors

In a defensive battle, Wagner took a narrow 36-33 victory over Winner girls basketball team in a SoDak game played in Mitchell on March 1.

Behind  a strong third quarter effort, the top seeded Red Raiders built a 13 point lead it used to hold off a late rally by the Lady Warriors. Winner came on strong making the final push to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

Winner cut the lead to four points (32-28 Wagner) on two free throws by Ellie Brozik.
With 1.3 seconds left in the game Wagner hung on to that three point lead.

The game was tied at 8 at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter, Winner was held to 3 points and six points in the third quarter.

Bella Swedlund scored 18 points. Kelsey Sachtjen and Ellie Brozik each had 6 points.

Winner shot 20 percent from the field and Wagner shot 41 percent.

At the free throw line, Winner made 11 of 16 shots for 68 percent.

Sachtjen pulled down 8 rebounds and Swedlund, 3.

Brozik led the team with 5 steals and Swedlund had 3.
Winner won the turnover battle giving the ball away eight times.

Winner ended the season with a 14-9 record.
