Northern State University finished with an undefeated season

Wyatt Turnquist of Winner, a member of the Northern State University wrestling team won a 7-1 over Chandler Mooney of the University of Mary on Thursday in Aberdeen.

Northern finished with an undefeated season and won the NSIC championship.

This was Northern’s first NSIC title since 2002.

Trap shooting awards presented

Katie Welker of the Winner/Colome high school trap shooting team was the high
overall female shooter in the state. Parker Baker was the high overall male
shooter in the state. He was also the first place male in the conference and
high overall shooter in the conference.

The Winner/Colome high school trap team recently handed out awards from the fall league. Winner/ Colome had the top 2 shooters in the state. Parker Baker was high overall male in the state and also high overall shooter with a 24 average. He also was 1st place male in the conference and high overall shooter in the conference. Katie Welker was the high overall female shooter in the state with a 23.8 average and was 1st place female shooter in the conference. As a team the Winner/Colome shooter took 1st place in the conference.

The following are the scores for each shooter for the 5 weeks of shooting. The scores are the number of targets out of 50 that are hit. AAU wrestlers place

Winner AAU wrestlers who placed at Gettysburg include from left Addyson Wingert-Hempel, Jace Koskan, Roukyn Robbins, Hudson Peters, Rylan Robbins, Rhogan Robbins and Eli Orel. The Winner team tied for 4th place.

The Winner AAU wrestling team tied for 4th place at a recent tournament in Gettysburg.

Rylan Robbins, Roukyn Robbins and Jace Koskan all placed first.

Also placing were Rhogan Robbins, 2nd; Hudson Peters, 2nd; Addyson Wingert-Hempel, 3rd and Eli Orel, 4th.

Apollo Willuweit placed second at Harrisburg and Legend Benedict placed 2nd at Huron on Sunday.

The Winner AAU wrestling tournament will be held Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.

Winner Area wrestling team captured first place at the Tri Valley Invitational on Saturday.

The Warriors had seven first place champions. They include Kaleb Osborn, Achilles Willuweit, Preston Norrid, Sam Kruger, Kaden Keiser, Riley Orel and Aaron Gilchrist.

Also placing for Winner were Maxton Brozik, 2nd; Karson Keiser, 2nd; Jack Kruger, 2nd.

Osborn won a 3-1 decision over Kyler Konstanz of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes.

Gilchrist won a 2-1 decision over Carter Lenz, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes.

Kaden Keiser, 19-0, pinned Tyler Groenewold, Tri Valley in 2:20.

Orel with a 23-0 record  pinned Isaac Crownover, Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon in 3:18.

Sam Kruger, 18-0, pinned Gavin Jacobs, Elk Point-Jefferson in 1:22.

Preston Norrid pinned Ethan Nehlich, Tri Valley in 5:58.

Willuweit won a 4-2 decision over Kameron Styles, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes.

The next action  for the wrestlers will be a quadrangular on Friday in Winner followed by Saturday’s big Winner Invitational. The Winner Invitational will start at 10:30 a.m.

There will be wrestling in both the Armory and the auxiliary gym.

Stanley County Triangular Results

Winner Area wrestling team swept two matches in a triangular at Stanley County on Jan. 12.

The Warriors defeated Redfield Area 49-23 and rolled over Stanley County 78-6.

With the two dual victories Winner’s record is 13-0.

Winner Area Wrestling Invite set for Jan. 23

The Winner wrestling invitational will be held on Jan. 23.  Wrestling will start at 10:30 a.m.

Twelve teams  plan to attend. They include: Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon, Burke/Gregory, Phillip Area, Potter Co., Stanley Co., Sully Buttes, Sunshine Bible Academy, Custer, Parker, Hot Springs, Wagner and Winner Area.

Winner will have two mats in the Armory. A secondary tournament will be in the auxiliary gym.

Due to South Dakota High School Activities Association COVID-19 rules there can only be an 8 man bracket. Therefore seeds 9-16 will have  secondary tournament in the auxiliary gym. This will also provide for more social distancing among fans.  

Wrestlers capture wins

Winner Area wrestling team had a successful day at the Mid-Dakota Monster in Presho on Saturday.

In the dual tournament, Winner won all four duals and three of them they shut out the teams.

Winner defeated Custer 76-0, defeated Hot Springs 78-0, defeated Bennett County, 84-0 and defeated McCook Central/Montrose 58-18.

Winner had hoped they would be able to face Canton in a dual but Canton was unable to attend due to illness.

Wrestlers place 2nd

Winner Area wrestlers returned to the mat after the Christmas break and placed second at the McCook Central tournament on Jan. 2.

The Warriors scored 239.5 points and Canton won first place with 252 points.

Winner had five champions in Riley Orel, Maxton Brozik, Karson Keiser, Sam Kruger and Kaden Keiser. Also placing were Konner Osborn, 4th; Jude Sargent, 5th; Aaron Gilchrist, 3rd; Ryken Orel, 6th; Jack Kruger, 3rd; Joey Cole, 3rd; Stetson Shelbourn, 5th; Preston Norrid, 2nd; Achilles Willuweit, 2nd.

In the championship match, Brozik won in sudden victory over Kipp Cordes of Philip area.

Karson Keiser won a 12-1 decision over Teague Granum of Canton.Kaden Keiser improved his record to 10-0 as he won by tech fall over Jordan Vosika of Burke/Gregory.

Riley Orel, 13-0, won 7-0 over Seth Peterson of Canton. Sam Kruger won the 170 pound championship with a pin in 26 seconds over Tucker Even of Burke/Gregory.

The next action for Winner will be Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Lyman County dual tournament. Winner will wrestle Custer, McCook Central, Canton and Bennett County.

Masks are mandatory at this tournament. Spectators are also limited to two spectators per wrestler.
