Colome Ready to Start Track Season

There are 11 returning lettermen on the Colome High School track team.

The letterwinners for the girls are: Abby Kortan, Saydee Heath, Hayley Krumpus, Kaydee Heath, Callie Heath and Jaclyn Laprath.

There are five lettermen on the boys team. They are: Andrew Laprath, Holden Thieman, Kelly O’Bryan, Matt Campbell and Jackson Kinzer.

Others on the girls team are Carleen Burger, Grace Campbell and Matrix Noteboom.

The others on the boys team are Chase Dufek, Calvin Ringing Shield, Beau Bertram, Adam Cole and Layton Thieman.

The Colome team competed in the Gregory meet on Monday.

Colome will compete in the Bill Pistulka Invitational in Winner on April 1.

4 AAU Wrestlers Place

Four Winner kids wrestled at Black Hills Nationals on March 17 in Spearfish.

Maxton Brozik won first place in novice at 70 pounds, Kaden Keiser won first place in school boy at 100 pounds, Owen Duffy won third place in schoolboy at 150 pounds and Kaleb Osborn won 4th place in schoolboy at 80 pounds.

Richey Helps USF Baseball Team

University of Sioux Falls baseball player Austin Richey of Winner is seeing key playing time for the Cougars at the designated hitter early in the season.

Richey has appeared in seven of the Cougars nine games in the season including five starts at DH. The redshirt senior from Winner also plays first base.

Richey had a two hit game Feb. 26 against Metro State Denver including an 11th inning RBI triple to help USF to a 7-4 win. For the season at this point, Richey is hitting .286 with four RBIs and six walks and two stolen bases.

Warriors Fall to Little Wound

Little Wound defeated the Winner boys basketball team 81-54 Thursday in Kyle in the Region 7A semifinals.  The Mustangs advanced to the Sweet 16 game which was played in Winner on March 7 as they took on Tea Area.

Drew DeMers had a big night as he scored 33 points.  Trevor Bertram scored 6 points and Wyatt Ewing, 4.

Wyatt Ewing pulled down 8 rebounds.

Warriors Down Red Cloud

Winner boys basketball team took the first step in the Region 7A tournament with a 52-48 victory over Red Cloud on Feb. 27.

Isaac Naasz led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points followed by Drew DeMers, 10; Cameron Kuil and Brandon Volmer, 7 each and Wyatt Ewing, 6.

Kuil pulled down 7 rebounds and Naasz, 5.

DeMers had 3 assists and Trevor Bertram had a man maker.

Cowboys Win Opening Game of District Tourney

Colome boys raced to a 23-9 first quarter lead on their way to a 67-25 victory over Burke/South Central in the District 12B basketball game on Feb. 28.

Four Colome players scored in double figures—Holden Thieman and Will Cahoy, 14 each; Kolton Salonen and Jackson Kinzer with 10 each. Beau Bertram and Kelly O’Bryan each added 8 points.

Kinzer pulled down 6 rebounds, O’Bryan and Holden Thieman, 5 each.

Wrestlers Placed Fourth at State

Winner Area wrestling team made a strong showing in the State B wrestling tournament this weekend in Sioux Falls.  The Warriors took fourth place with 88 points.

Fueled by Tre Doren’s state championship at 285 pounds, the Warriors had five over wrestlers come home with a medal.   Winner had eight wrestlers on the mat at the state meet.

Doren, a senior, won a 5-2 decision over Austin Moore of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes.

At 106 pounds, 7th grader Kaden Keiser placed sixth as he defeated 10-6 by Jordan Rueb of Bon Homme/Scotland.

Wyatt Turnquist won fifth place as he won by injury default.

Atlas Willuweit wrestled Jackson Eklund of Burke/Gregory for third and fourth place. Willuweit took fourth as Eklund won 13-4.

Trevor Peters won seventh place with a 5-2 decision over Ben Soukup of Wagner.

Kayleb Brozik won fifth place as he pinned Logan Donelan of Elk Point-Jefferson in 4:24.
Avery Gilchrist and Jayden Schroeder also wrestled at state.
