Winner boys basketball team took the first step in the Region 7A tournament with a 52-48 victory over Red Cloud on Feb. 27.

Isaac Naasz led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points followed by Drew DeMers, 10; Cameron Kuil and Brandon Volmer, 7 each and Wyatt Ewing, 6.

Kuil pulled down 7 rebounds and Naasz, 5.

DeMers had 3 assists and Trevor Bertram had a man maker.

Gregory grinded out a 49-43 victory over Colome boys basketball team in the District 12B championship game Friday in the Mitchell Corn Palace.

Holden Thieman led the scoring for Colome with 14 points with Jackson Kinzer and Kelly O’Bryan each adding 12.

Gregory out-rebounded Colome 31-24. Thieman pulled down 11 rebounds.

Colome boys raced to a 23-9 first quarter lead on their way to a 67-25 victory over Burke/South Central in the District 12B basketball game on Feb. 28.

Four Colome players scored in double figures—Holden Thieman and Will Cahoy, 14 each; Kolton Salonen and Jackson Kinzer with 10 each. Beau Bertram and Kelly O’Bryan each added 8 points.

Kinzer pulled down 6 rebounds, O’Bryan and Holden Thieman, 5 each.

Winner Area wrestling team made a strong showing in the State B wrestling tournament this weekend in Sioux Falls.  The Warriors took fourth place with 88 points.

Fueled by Tre Doren’s state championship at 285 pounds, the Warriors had five over wrestlers come home with a medal.   Winner had eight wrestlers on the mat at the state meet.

Doren, a senior, won a 5-2 decision over Austin Moore of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes.

At 106 pounds, 7th grader Kaden Keiser placed sixth as he defeated 10-6 by Jordan Rueb of Bon Homme/Scotland.

Wyatt Turnquist won fifth place as he won by injury default.

Atlas Willuweit wrestled Jackson Eklund of Burke/Gregory for third and fourth place. Willuweit took fourth as Eklund won 13-4.

Trevor Peters won seventh place with a 5-2 decision over Ben Soukup of Wagner.

Kayleb Brozik won fifth place as he pinned Logan Donelan of Elk Point-Jefferson in 4:24.
Avery Gilchrist and Jayden Schroeder also wrestled at state.

Winner High School boys basketball team closed out the regular season with a 62-53 victory over Crow Creek on Feb. 20.

Drew DeMers scored 18 points followed by Cameron Kuil, 15; Trevor Bertram, 8; Isaac Naasz, 7 and Wyatt Ewing, 6.

Naasz pulled down 7 rebounds with Kuil, Chase Kingsbury and Ewing, 6 each.

Brandon Volmer and DeMers had 3 assists each.

Little Wound defeated the Winner girls basketball team 62-49 Saturday in Kyle.

Bella Swedlund led the scoring for Winner with 19 points including five 3 pointers.  Morgan Hammerbeck added 7 points.

The Lady Warriors shot 26 percent from the field. At the free throw line they shot 23 percent.

Chloe Bartels and Hammerbeck both pulled down 6 rebounds.

Winner ended the season with a record of 15-7.

Gregory defeated Colome girls 46-32 in the first round of the District 12B basketball tournament last Monday in Colome.

Abby Korton and Saydee Heath each had 6 points for the Cowgirls. Callie Heath had 7 rebounds.

Colome was 7 of 56 from the field and at the free throw line made 17 of 31 shots.

Colome ended its season with a 4-17 record.

Bon Homme out-scored the Colome Cowboys 13-7 in overtime to win a 76-70 victory on Saturday in Tyndall.

Holden Thieman led the Cowboys with 29 points with Kelly O’Bryan adding 20 and Jackson Kinzer, 11.

Holden Thieman pulled down 8 rebounds and Layton Thieman and Kolton Salonen each grabbed 5.

Winner Area wrestling team won the 3B wrestling title Saturday in Wagner. The Warriors will send eight wrestlers to the state tournament which starts Friday in Sioux Falls at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

The Warriors advancing to the state tournament are: Kaden Keiser, Wyatt Ewing, Atlas Willuweit, Trevor Peters, Avery Gilchrist, Kayleb Brozik, Jayden Schroeder and Tre Doren.

Wrestling at the state tournament starts at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Winner boys basketball team had three high scoring players in Friday’s 68-43 victory over Mobridge-Pollock.

Drew DeMers led the scoring with 22 points followed by Trevor Bertram, 19 and Wyatt Ewing, 15. Brandon Volmer added 5 points.

Ewing pulled down 9 rebounds and DeMers had 6 assists.

The next action for Winner will be the regional tournament.
