Colome Cowgirls Spikers Compete in Gregory

Colome High School volleyball team played three games in the Gregory tournament on Sept. 2.

Colome defeated Cody-Kilgore 25-13, 13-25, 25-18.

Abby Kortan had 18 points, Rayne Hermsen 7 and Haley Krumpus, 7 points.  Kortan had 4 aces, Krumpus, 3 and Hermsen, 1.
Kaydee Heath had 9 kills and Hermsen, 3.  Alexa McKenzie had 13 digs and Kortan, 5.  Heath had 2 blocs and Hermsen, 1.
Makayla Shippy had 13 assists.

Colome was defeated by Boyd County 15-25, 25-20, 23-25.

Heath had 10 points and 1 ace; Maggie McCarty had 7 points and 3 aces and Hermsen had 6 points.  Heath had 11 kills and six each from Hermsen and Krumpus.  McKenzie had 11 digs and Hermsen, 7.  Hermsen had 6 blocks and Heath, 4.  Shippy had 15 assists.

Colome fell to Warner 25-16, 25-9.

Krumpus had 4 points and Kortan 2.  Kortan had 4 kills and 2 each from Krumpus and Heath.  Shippy and Jordyn Seegers had 2 digs.  Heath and Kortan had a block.  Shippy had 7 assits.

The next action for Colome is Sept. 7 at Jones County. On Sept. 9, Colome will host Tripp/Delmont/Armour.

Girls Cross Country Team Takes Second Place

Winner area girls cross country team placed second at the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational cross county meet on Aug. 29.  Sidda Schuyler placed second followed by Aryn Meiners, 8th; Saige Schuyler 15th; Meagan Blare, 24th and Madison Thieman, 38th .

The Winner area boys varsity team took fifth place. In the boys varsity race, Kade Watson placed 10th; Dawson Phillips, 25th; Wyatt Turnqusit, 42nd.

In the girls junior varsity race, Melanie Brozik placed 8th; Charlotte Shopene, 16th ; Katherine Jankauskas, 37th; Joselin Kludt, 38th and Gabby Kocer, 39th.  Atlas Willuweit placed 68th in the boys junior varsity race.

The next action for the cross country team will be at Chamberlain Sept. 14 for the Big Dakota Conference meet.

Middle School Softball Downs Watertown

Winner middle school fall softball team was defeated by Garretson Red 7-2 on Sunday in Sioux Falls. The game was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when Garretson scored five runs to take the lead.

Winner defeated Watertown Purple 13-11. Kelbi Meiners had 3 hits driving in a 2 runs. Rylee Root had 3 hits driving in four runs. Libbie Petersek had 2 hits driving in 2 runs. Josey Kludt had 2 hits driving in 1 run. Aleya Miller and Karlee Brozik each had 1 hit. Root, Kludt and Petersek hit doubles.

Root struck out 7 batters.

Softball Team Splits Games

Winner High School fall softball girls split games in their first outing of the season Sunday in Sioux Falls.

In the first game, Tri Valley defeated Winner 10-0. Pitchers were Riley McClanahan, Kenndal Turnquist and Elisabeth Duffy.
Leading hitters were Jaynee Gregg, Turnquist and Duffy.

In the second game, Winner defeated Lennox 8-3.

Duffy was the winning pitcher as she pitched all five innings.

Leading hitters were Ronae Klein, Mary Calhoon, Alani Old Lodge, Jaynee Gregg, Keyleigh Stands, Joslyn Felix, Riley McClanahan, Alex Bohnet, Delanie Nelson, Hailey Hollenbeck, Kenndal Turnquist, Emmy Kaiser and Elisabeth Duffy.

The next game for the team will be Sept. 10 when they travel to Dakota Valley to play the host team.

Volleyball Team Splits Matches

Winner Lady Warriors volleyball team opened the season with a victory over Bon Homme last Tuesday in front of the home crowd.  The Lady Warriors won in 3 sets 25-12, 25-18, 25-19.

Gracie Littau and Sam Marts were 100 percent in serving.  Morgan Hammerbeck had 5 ace serves and Abby Marts, 2.  Hammerbeck had 17 kills and Abby Marts, 10.  Littau had 34 set assists.  Alexis Richey was 84 percent in serve receive.
Abby Marts and Richey each had 9 digs.  As a team, Winner was 93 percent in serving with 12 aces, 39 kills, 37 assists. They were 85 percent in serve receive with 35 digs.

“We came out focused and ready to play,” said coach Jaime Keiser. “We were aggressive and did a great job of attacking the ball which kept Bon Homme on the defensive end. We were getting in defensive position and playing very well as a team,” said Keiser.
“It was a total team effort and everyone stepped up and did what they needed to do to win.”

On Thursday, Winner hosted Miller and lost in four sets—25-21, 19-25, 16-25, 20-25.

Daesha Klein and Littau were 100 percent in serving.  Hammerbeck and Abby Marts had 2 aces with Hammerbeck having 26 kills and Marts, 4.  Littau had 41 set assists.  Hammerbeck was 84 percent in serve receive and Richey was 83 percent.  Richey had 36 digs and Hammerbeck and Abby Marts, 21 each.  Sam Marts had 4 solo blocks and 1 block assist and Abby Marts had 1 solo block and 1 block assist.  As a team, Winner was 93 percent in serving with 5 aces, 55 kills and 41 assists. The team was 76 percent in serve receive with 112 digs and 7 blocks.

Coach Keiser said Miller is great team and brought back a lot of players from last year. “They have a very balanced and athletic team. We came out ready to play and battled back after being down to win set 1. They had some hard hitters and did a good job of playing defense and digging up their hard hits but it kept us out of system,” explained Keiser.

“We played with a lot of intensity and never gave up. Hopefully we will get another shot at them in the Big Dakota Conference Tournament.”

The next a action for Winner will in a triangular with Valentine and Ainsworth on Aug. 31. On Sept. 5, Winner will host Bennett County and Gregory.

Colome Improves to 2-0

Colome football team crusied to a 56-6 victory over Tripp Delmont Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian Friday night in Colome.

The game was delayed for an hour and a half due to lightning, however the two teams were able to get in the game.

The game ended in the third quarter due to a mercy rule.

Scoring for Colome were Jackson Kinzer on a 36 yard run, Layton Thieman threw a 50 yard pass to Kinzer, Beau Bertram caught a 46 yard pass from Thieman, Wyatt Cahoy scored on a 1 yard run, Chase Dufek on a 69 yard run and Linkyn Petersek scored two touchdowns on runs of 17 and 15 year.

Calvin Ringing Shield scored on a defensive touchdown.

Two point conversions were made by Dufek, Thieman and Nathaniel Hansen.

The Cowboys had a total of 381 yards of offense. Thieman had 96 yards passing.

Dufek ran for 104 yards and Kinzer, 96 yards and Petersek, 32 yards.

Leaders on defense were Bertram, 3 tackles and a sack, Nash Atteberry 3 tackles and a sack.

“We came out and executed well,” said coach Ben Connot.

The next action for Colome will be Sept. 1 when they host Burke/South Central.

Colome Cowboys 50 Centerville Tornados 0

The No. 2 Colome Cowboys started their season with a 50-0 victory over Centerville Friday night.

The game ended in the third quarter due to the mercy rule.

Colome, the defending Class 9B state champion, had a total of 371 yards of total offense.

Scoring for Colome were Chase Dufek on a 24 yard run, Layton Thieman on a 5 yard run, Beau Bertram on a 15 yard run, Bertram on a 67 yard run, Chase Dufek on a 78 yard run, Jackson Kinzer caught a 48 yard pass from Thieman for a touchdown and Jaikob Week on a 18 yard run.

“We started out slow but after we got going we made some big stops,” said first year coach Ben Connot. “We really got rolling on big plays.”

Connot said he was excited to get the season started and glad to get the first win under his belt.

Leading the offense was Dufek with 119 yards rushing followed by Bertram, 95 yards, Jackson Kinzer, 61 yard.

In passing, Thieman was 1-3 for 48 yards.

On defense, leading tacklers were Nash Atteberry, 6 and 2 sacks; Dawson Varilek, 6; Bertram, 5 and a fumble recovery; Calvin Ringing Shield, 4 tackles and a blocked punt.

Connot said a lot of younger players were able to get into the game and they played hard and moved the ball.

“Overall, we played hard,” said Connot.

The Cowboys will host Tripp-Delmont-Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian Friday night in Colome with the game starting at 7 p.m.
