In a wild game, Winner High School football team rallied to defeat Chamberlain 42-40 Friday night.

Trevor Peters scored a 2 yard touchdown with 14 seconds left in the game.

With 2:39 left in the game, Winner was down 10 points, 40-30.

With 2:01 left in the game, Brady Fritz completes a 41 yard pass to Brandon Volmer for a touchdown to cut Chamberlain’s lead.

On a third down, Preston Norrid came up with a huge sack and then Winner blocked a Cubs punt to give the Warriors the ball on the 45 yard line.

Casey Stickland caught a pass from Fritz to move Winner close to the goal line and then Fritz scrambled to get to the 2 yard line to allow Peters to punch in the ball for the winning touchdown.

“I want to give our kids credit for making big plays,” said coach Dan Aaker.

Chamberlain, celebrating its homecoming, took the lead right away with two touchdowns.

Winner scored with 1:15 left in the first quarter on a 7 yard run by Brady Fritz, who also made the 2 point conversion.

At the start of the second quarter, Phillip Jorgensen scored on a 2 yard run to give Winner the lead 16-13.

Chamberlain countered with a TD giving them back the lead.

Right before the half Peters scored on a 2 yard run and Winner led 22-19.

In the third quarter, Sam Kruger scored on a 2 yard run.

The Cubs had three unanswered touchdowns in the second half.

Both teams were close in first downs with Winner having 21 and Chamberlain 22.

The Warriors had a total of 391 offensive yards.

Leading rushers were Jorgensen, 94 yards; Fritz, 74 yards; Peters, 47 yards and Kruger, 32 yards.

In passing, Fritz was 7-13 for 128 yards.

Leading the Winner defense was Shea Connot with 10 tackles, Volmer, Peters, Norrid, Elijah Blare, all with 6 and Bosten Morehart with 5.

“We were worried about their size up front and had a hard time defensively stopping them,” said Aaker.

The Warriors will travel to Wagner on Friday. “The big thing this week is that we have to find ourselves defensively,” said the coach. “We need to have a good defensive game and gain some confidence on that side of the ball.”

The No. 3 rated Colome Cowboys remained undefeated as they rolled over Alcester-Hudson 62-8 Friday in Colome.

Jackson Kinzer went 7 for 10 for 66 yards in the air and also added 44 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Chase Dufek ran for 92 yards. Beau Bertram had 52 yards rushing and Riley Shippy, 33.

Scoring for Colome were Beau Bertram on a 15 yard pass from Kinzer, Bertram on a 3 yard run, Jaikob Week on a 13 yard run, Kinzer on a 24 yard run, Layton Thieman on a 10 yard pass from Kinzer, Bertram, 49 yard run, Kinzer on a 65 yard kickoff return, and Rhet Bertram on a punt block return.
The Cowboys had 299 yards of total offense. The Cowboys had 12 first downs to 7 for Alcester-Hudson.

Leading the defense was Wyatt Cahoy with 9 tackles followed by Bertram with 8 and Kinzer, 7.

The next action for Colome will be Sept. 28 at Scotland.

Winner High School football team scored the first two touchdowns of the homecoming game Friday night and were feeling pretty good about themselves. However, the undefeated Mount Vernon/Plankinton team played a strong second half to defeat the Warriors 30-28.

The Warriors at one point in the game led 28-6. However, in the second half, Winner only had six offensive plays.

“It was a tough loss,” said coach Dan Aaker. “It was the tale of two halves. We played a good first half.”

The Warriors scored right away in the game as Trevor Peters run 66 yards for a touchdown. Midway in the first quarter, Brady Fritz completed a 14 yard pass to Sam Kruger for a touchdown and Winner is up 14-0.

With 2:49 left in the first quarter, MVP scored on a Jesse Hastings 6 yard run.

A Winner touchdown right before the half with 16 seconds left was huge. Phillip Jorgensen scored on a 5 yard run.

At the half, Winner led 22-6

Then at the start of the third quarter, Jorgensen makes a huge play as a pass intended for Hastings is picked off by Jorgensen who turns it into a touchdown. Now, Winner is up 28-6 and feeling pretty good about themselves.

“I think we relaxed a bit, however MVP did not quit fighting. At that point they could have laid down but they fought us. When things got close we panicked and pressed ourselves,” said Aaker.

The WHS coach says he has to give MVP credit as they played well in the second half. “We could not stop them. They had 72 plays to our 39.”

The Titans had a huge drive, which started at their own 2-yard line, and capped off by a Hastings two yard run to tie the game at 28-28. Hastings made the two-point conversion to give them the lead 30-28.

The No 5 rated Warriors had one last effort. Trevor Peters completed a 50 yard pass to Brandon Volmer with 3:17 left in the game down to the MVP 24-yard line.

Winner worked the ball to the 11-yard line. Facing a fourth and seven with 1:29 left Hastings sacked QB Fritz.

The Warriors had a total of 243 yards of offense.

MVP had 21 first downs to Winner’s 10.

Leading rusher for Winner was Peters with 100 yards and Jorgensen added 40 yards.

On defense, Shea Connot had 16 tackles, Preston Norrid and Brandon Volmer, 11 each; Sam Kruger, 10 and Elijah Blare, 9.

The MVP coaching staff has a Winner area connection. Head coach Brent Olson is the brother of Winner assistant coaches Trent and Sam Olson. Also, MVP assistant coach Zach Harter is formerly of Colome.

The Warriors will travel to Chamberlain on Friday, Sept. 28. Aaker said the Cubs are big up front led by Nash Hutmacher.

“They are a concern because they are so big,” said the coach.

He noted the line of scrimmage is going to huge for Winner.

“We will take the positives from Friday’s game and put them into games as we move forward,” said Aaker.

As a side note, for the second year in a row, the WHS football team took residents from Winner Regional long term care center to the homecoming parade Friday afternoon.

“It is good for our kids to get out of their comfort zone and I am glad we do it,” said the coach.

Winner area girls cross country team took second place at the Platte-Geddes invitational on Saturday.

Sidda Schuyler led the Lady Warriors as she placed second. She was followed by Saige Schuyler, 6^th; Meagan Blare, 12^th; Aryn Meiners, 21^st; Jaclyn Laprath, 25^th; Melanie Brozik, 31^st.

In the varsity boys race, Wyatt Turnquist placed 26^th and Joseph Laprath, 27^th.

In the junior varsity girls race, Madison Thieman was 3^rd; Gabby Kocer, 14^th; Katherine Jankauskas, 16^th and Trinity Vrbka, 17^th.

The next action for the cross country team will be Sept. 27 at Burke/South Central. On Oct. 1, the team will travel to Mt. Vernon/Plankinton.

Winner High School boys golfers competed in the Parkston Invitational on Sept. 18.

Gage Watson placed 26^th and Nathan Monk placed 57^th.

Winner volleyball team won the Eastern Conference tournament in Sisseton on Saturday.

In the championship, Winner defeated Dakota Valley. The Lady Warriors won 25-22, 25-20.

Mackenzie Levi and Gracie Littau were 100 percent in serving.

Littau, Levi and Morgan Hammerbeck each had one ace serve.

Hammerbeck had 11 kills and Abby Marts, 7.

Levi had 15 set assists and Root, 7.

Maggie LaCompte had 11 digs and Littau, 10.

Ellie Brozik had 1 block and Gracie Littau, 2 block assists.

As a team, Winner was 92 percent in serving, with 4 ace serves, 23 kills, 22 set assists and 55 digs.

In the opening match of the tournament, Winner defeated Webster in two sets—25-16, 25-12.

Littau and Levi were 100 percent in serving. Brozik had 2 ace serves and 9 kills.

Hammebeck had 5 kills.

Levi had 10 set assists and Root, 7.

Hammerbeck and Root each had 8 digs.

Kalla Bertram had 2 solo block.

As a team, Winner was 91 percent in serving with 6 ace serves, 19 kills, 17 set assists.

Winner beat Milbank 25-22, 25-23.

Littau was 100 percent serving and Hammebeck was 90 percent.

Hammerbeck had 3 ace serves and Levi, 1.

Hammerbeck had 11 kills, Brozik, 6 and Marts, 5.

Levi had 15 set assists and Root, 8.

Littau had 10 digs and Brozik, 8.

Marts had 1 solo block and 1 block assist. Bertram had 2 block assists.

The Lady Warriors were 90 percent in serving with 4 aces, 24 kills, 23 assists and 48 digs.

“We came out focused and ready to play,” said coach Jaime Keiser. “We played pretty consistent most of the day. I was proud of how the girls showed intensity and how we jelled together as a team. All day we did a great job of attacking the ball which kept our opponent on the defensive end,” said the coach.

Keiser added: “In the championship match we came out ready to play and had the momentum most of the match. We did a great job of serving and attacking Dakota Valley and got them out of system. Dakota Valley is a good team and had some good hitters. It was a fun day with a great team effort,”

The Colome High School volleyball team placed sixth at the Kimball Tournament on Sept. 22.

Wessington Springs defeated Colome 2-0—25-22 and 27-25.

Haley Krumpus had 6 points and 2 aces; Saydee Heath and Kaydee Heath each had 4 points.

Kaydee Heath had 7 kills and Haley Krumpus and 10 digs.

Colome defeated Iroquois 25-11, 25-12. Baylie Hoffine had 11 points and 4 aces. She was also 100 percent in serving.

Carleen Burger had 7 kills.

Makayla Shippy had 14 assists.

Burke/South Central defeated Colome 25-16 and 25-10.

Shippy had 5 points and one ace. Burger had 5 kills.

Shippy had 6 assists.

The Cowgirls fell to Canistota 2-1. Colome won the first set 25-23 and then fell in the next two 9-25, 21-25

Saydee Heath had 8 points and one ace; Haley Krumpus had 5 points and 2 aces.

Burger and Krumpus had 6 kills.

Shippy had 17 set assists and 10 digs. Kaydee Heath had 7 digs.

Saydee Heath and Kaydee Heath each had a block.

Winner High School football team played a competitive game against a tough Valentine, Neb., team Friday night.

The Warriors, rated No. 5 in Class 11B, came away with a 26-20 victory. This improved Winner’s record to 3-1.

“We tried to prepare our guys all week to understand the intensity we knew Valentine was going to bring to this game,” said coach Dan Aaker.

“We have beaten them 11 straight years and they really wanted us bad.”

The score was tied 14-14 at halftime and Winner played an excellent third quarter to pull away for the win.

The Badgers got on the board first at the end of the first quarter. Jon Keller completed a 59 yard pass to Devon Osnes.

The Warriors countered with a long drive and Trevor Peters scored on a five yard run.

Midway in the second quarter, Valentine scored again giving them a 14-6 lead.

With 1:08 left in the first half, Peters scored on a 7 yard run to tie the game at 14-14.

In the third quarter, Winner scored two touchdowns. Sam Kruger scored on a 3 yard run and Phillip Jorgensen scored o a 30 yard run to give Winner a 26-14 lead.

However, Valentine came back in the fourth quarter and scored to narrow the score.

With 6 minutes left, Winner had a nice drive but fumbled inside the 30-yard line.

The Warriors had 380 total yards and Valentine had 284 yards. Winner had 355 yards rushing.

Leading rusher was Peters with 139 yards followed by Jorgensen with 109, Kruger with 80.

Winner’s defense was led by Shea Connot with 8 tackles, Ethan Vesely, Peters, Preston Norrid, 5 each. Brandon Volmer had 4 tackles.

“It is a quality win,” said Aaker. “I saw some resilience in our guys. We did not play very clean as we had 3 turnover and penalties killed us,” said the coach.

For homecoming on Friday, Sept. 21, the Warriors will host the undefeated Mt. Vernon-Plankinton who is rated No. 3 in Class 11B.

Aaker says a big concern will be their junior running back Jessie Hastings. He added MVP has a nice team and will be a good challenge.

The WHS coach noted: “I like playing good teams for homecoming because it forces our guys to understand that they need to bring their best game to the table.”

It is an exciting week with all the homecoming events including the coronation on Thursday night.

“We are looking for an exciting week,” said Aaker.

No. 3 rated Colome Cowboys rolled to a 68-16 homecoming victory over Gayville-Volin Friday night.

The contest ended in the third quarter due to the mercy rule.

Gayville-Volin put the first points on the board but after that it was all Colome.

Scoring for the Cowboys were Jaikob Week on an 11 yard run, Kinzer on a 75 yard run, Week on a 49 pass from Kinzer, Riley Shippy on a 37 yard run, Michael Supik on a 15 yard run, Layton Thieman on a 73 yard pass from Kinzer, Kinzer on a 40 yard run.

In the third quarter, Shippy had runs of 16 and 46 yards.

The Cowboys had a total of 504 yards.

Kinzer ran for 159 yards and passed for 131 yards.

Wyatt Cahoy had 11 tackles.

“We had some players step up and played well,” said coach Ben Connot. He noted that Riley Shippy played well in this game.

The Cowboys, 4-0, will host Alcester-Hudson on Friday.

Winner Lady Warriors volleyball team took second place in the Big Dakota Conference tournament Saturday in Ft. Pierre.

Alexis Richey, Abby Marts and Morgan Hammerbeck were named to the all-tournament team.

Winner was defeated by Miller in three sets in the championship. The scores were 25-23, 20-25, 19-15.

Addy Root and Maggie LaCompte were 100 percent in serving. Ellie Brozik was 92 percent in serving with two ace serves.

Gracie Littau had one ace serve.

Kalla Bertram had 7 kills and Brozik, 6.

Mackenzie Levi had 16 set assists and Root, 4.

Morgan Hammerbeck had 7 digs and LaCompte, Richey and Levi had 6 digs.

Hammerbeck and Bertram each had a solo block.

For the team, Winner was 90 percent in serving, with 3 ace serves, 21 kills, 21 set assists and 55 digs.

In the first match, Winner defeated Stanley County in two sets—25-13, 25-7.

Brozik and Richey were 100 percent in serving. Brozik had 3 ace serves and Root and Richey 1 ace serve.

Hammerbeck had 11 kills, Marts, 9 kills.

Levi had 15 set assists, Root, 7 set assists.

Richey had 18 digs and Hammerbeck, 9.

As a team, Winner was 88 percent in serving with 5 ace serves, 26 kills, 23 set assists and 45 digs.

Winner beat CEB in 2 sets. The scores were 25-12 and 25-16.

Hammerbeck, Brozik and Littau were 100 percent in serving. Hammerbeck had 7 ace serves and Brozik, 2.

Hammerbeck had 9 kills and Marts, 6.

Levi had 12 set assists and Root, 7.

Hammerbeck had 11 digs and Richey 10 digs. Brozik and Bertram had 1 solo block.

As a team, Winner was 98 percent in serving with 12 ace serves, 21 kills, 19 set assists, 34 digs.

Winner beat Chamberlain in two sets—25-17, 25-5.

Hammerbeck and Bertram were 100 percent in serving. Bertram had 6 aces and Hammerbeck, 5 aces.

Hammerbeck had 4 kills.

Root had 8 set assists and Levi had 3.

Richey had 10 digs and Brozik, 7.

As a team, Winner was 89 percent, 12 aces, 15 kills, 13 set assists and 31 digs.

“It was a real up and down day,” said coach Jaime Keiser. We came out ready to play. We did a good job of attacking the ball against Stanley County and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte. We were put in the championship pool and played Chamberlain first. We came out a little flat and made some errors and gave Chamberlain some unearned points. The second set we took care of the little things and did a great job of serving and attacking which kept Chamberlain out of system,” said Keiser.

“We had Miller in the championship and we knew they would want revenge after beating them earlier in the season. The first game we had everything clicking and played pretty good. We had all the momentum after winning the first set and took it into the second set. We had the lead with Alexis Richey went down with an injury and it took everything out of us and completely took away our momentum,” said the coach. “We stayed with Miller but just couldn’t completely recover after beating deflated by Alexis’s injury.”

Winner Lady Warriors defeated Lyman in four sets on Sept. 11.

The scores were 25-18, 25-14, 22-25 and 25-21.

The Lady Warriors are rated No. 2 in the Class A poll.

Alexis Richey and Gracie Littau were 100 percent in serving.

Mackenzie Levi had 4 aces and Maggie LaCompte, 3.

Morgan Hammerbeck had 18 kills, Ellie Brozik, 16 kills.

Levi had 23 set assists and Addy Root, 16.

Richey had 30 digs and Hammerbeck, 29.

Kalla Bertram had 3 solo blocks and 1 block assist.

Abby Marts had 1 solo block.

As a team, Winner was 88 percent in serving, 14 ace serves, 48 kills, 43 set assists, 122 digs and 5 blocks.

“Lyman was a very scrappy team and they seemed to get over everything we hit at them,” said coach Jaime Keiser.

“It was their homecoming week and they came out ready to play. We played flat and had a hard time getting anything going,” said the coach.

“It seemed like we were just going through the motions and our minds weren’t in the match. We gave up too many unearned points with serving and attacking errors. I was proud of the girls that came off the bench and played the end of the fourth set. They stepped up and showed a lot of intensity and heart.”

The next action for the volleyball team will be Sept. 22 at Sisseton and Sept. 25 Todd County will be in Winner.
