Bobbe Kositzky, age 91

Bobbe Kositzky, age 91, of Graceville, MN, passed away on April 25, 2022, at Essentia Health – Grace Home. She had been a resident of Grace Village the past 9 years, which she enjoyed tremendously. She had a gentle soul and was a friend to all as well as being a loving mother and wife.

Memorial services will be held on June 4, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Mundwiler and Larson Funeral Home in Graceville. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Inurnment of both Bobbe and Paul will be held at Graceville Consolidated Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at Graceville Community Center.

Barbara “Bobbe” Karen (Holm) Kositzky was born on Dec. 4, 1930, in Omaha, NE, to Audrey (nee, Donahoe) and Jake Holm, who resided in Winner, SD. There, she was baptized, confirmed, and married to Paul Kositzky at Trinity Episcopal Church. A graduate of Winner High School, she attended two years of University of Nebraska where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She returned to Winner to marry Paul in 1951.

In 1964, Bobbe and Paul moved their family to Graceville where she resided until her death. She was a stay-at-home mother, but was also a chef to many of Paul’s sales personnel and customers, usually for lunch. In order to obtain World Books for her family, she became a successful salesperson of the encyclopedias. While in those roles, she pursued her interests as a member of art, Bridge, and dance clubs. To say she was a seamstress was an understatement because she sewed all of her clothes and those of her daughter’s. Vogue patterns were a favorite.

Survivors include her children: Kimberley (Neil) Johnson of Kennedy, MN; Kirk (Dan) Wanderscheid of Sioux City, IA; April (Neil) Klutman of Lawrence, KS; and Kyle Kositzky (Annie Erickson) of Moorhead, MN; six grandchildren: Jacob, Adam, Erin, Whitney, Quinn, and Connor; as well as five great-grandchildren.

Bobbe was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; sister, Dr. Jaqueline Voss; and brother-in-law, Scad Voss.

Richard Hoffer, 89

Richard Hoffer, 89, of Winner, SD passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at the Platte Health Center Avera in Platte, SD. 

  Funeral service was held on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 10 a.m.  at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD.  Burial  followed in the Winner City Cemetery. 

Richard Hoffer was born July 30, 1932 in Reliance, SD to John and Louise Hoffer.  He attended Quiet Creek school, then went to Millboro School.  Later on, to Colome where he learned to box.  Richard started school as speaking German only, later learned English.

Richard was united in marriage to Shirley Chambers June 26, 1955.  To this union 4 children were born, Rodney, Debra, Roger and Scott.

Richard drove truck for many years, and then went into milking cows, farming and ranching.  He loved the outdoors, he was always working on fixing things, like small engines, tractors, anything that needed some work done.  Richard was also very good at wood working.  Later on, he liked to play the piano and guitar.

Richard will be greatly missed left to mourn him a daughter; Deb Shreeve, son Scott (Deb) Hoffer; grandchildren; Trisha Shreeve, Angy (Jim) Murphy, Russell (Sarah) Hoffer, Craig (Kelly) Hoffer, Sarah (Tim) Novotny, Nikki (Shannon) Whitten, Marie (Nathan) Lapsley, great-grandchildren; Isabella, Isaiah, Lijah and Harley, Baylor and Blayke Murphy, Tayshaun, Sadie, Oakley Hoffer, Nancy Novotny and Scarlett Hoffer, Tyler and Emma Berg and Ava Lapsley, Shaylin and Pryce Whitten.

He is preceded to death by his wife Shirley Hoffer, 2 sons; Roger and Rodney, his parents John and Louise and a son-in-law Roy Shreeve.

Fredrick Whiting Jr., 20,

Fredrick Whiting Jr., 20, of Winner, SD passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.  Funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 10 a.m. at the Winner High School Auxiliary Gym.  Burial  followed at the Winner City Cemetery. 

A wake service began on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Winner High School Auxiliary Gym and again on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 7 p.m.

 Fredrick James Whiting Jr., was born Oct. 24, 2001 at the Winner Regional Hospital to Fred Sr. and Jolene Medicine Eagle-Old Lodge.

 Fred attended school K-3rd in Todd County.  He then moved to Winner where he attended Winner Schools and graduated with the “Bad Ass” “Class of 2020”.  Fred had an unbelievable passion for sports.  During his high school years Fred played basketball, football and baseball.  Fred had the advantage to know the feeling of playing in the State Championship Game.

 Fred started his baseball career playing with the Winner/Colome Pheasants.  Fred then went to play fast pitch with Red Leaf and slow pitch with Striders/ Rosebud Concrete, and the Ideal Indians.  Third base was his place, “where the action is.”

 Fred had an awesome sense of humor, a great personality and a smile that brightened up any room and a heart of gold.

 When Fred would enter a room there was bound to be jokes, love and laughter.  When Fred played ball, he played with his heart but made sure it was fun.

 In the short 20 years that Fred was here with us he made so many friends.  Fred was a happy go lucky man.  No matter who Fred met, he was bound to leave an awesome 1st impression.  He got along with everyone he met.

 Fred will always be remembered by his smile and his “baseball ass.”  Fred was known as “Big Fred” on the football field, ball field and most defiantly on the basketball court.

 Fred is survived by his mother and step-father Jolene and Howard Old Lodge Sr., his father Fredrick Whiting Sr., his sisters JoHannah, TaeLeigh Whiting, Jolisse Old Lodge, his brothers, Andrew Whiting and Kyrie Old Lodge, his maternal grandmothers, Leah (Brad) Stands, his paternal grandparents Ken and Amy Whiting.

 Fred is preceded in death by his younger brother Joshua Whiting, his maternal grandfather Carl Quilt, his grandfather Cage Medicine Eagle Sr.

Jeanie Williams, 56

Jeanie Williams, 56 of Mission, SD passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at her home in Mission, SD.  Celebration of Life service was held on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Antelope Community Building.  Burial will follow at a later date.

Jean was born on Oct. 30, 1965 to Martha and the late Geno Williams.

Jean was a full-time mother and wife and had many great characteristics.  She was a very strong willed, stubborn and wise woman but also had a big tender heart, “just don’t piss her off:)”.  Jean was not afraid to take on the world by herself.  She loved her children and family and was a very loving grandmother, she also took care of her elders all of her life (Carl Helen, Mercy, Lloyd).  

Jean also loved and cared for many animals. She worked hard and was the best at everything she did.  Jean was the top cheerleader for TCHS.   Jean was a waitress and bartender, she also helped run her father’s shop since she was a child.

Jean enjoyed many things like cheerleading, basketball, to dance and sing with her beautiful voice, the rain and the new life it brought, gardening, yard work, home decorating, but most of all….she loved her beer.

Jean is preceded in death by her father Eugene Williams and two children; Roger Dale Colombe and Carol Samuel Colombe and sister Marty Jean.

Jean is survived by her seven children and 9 grandchildren; James Menard (D’Juan Mayne), Jason Menard (Josiah Xavier, Jaggard James), Juan Colombe (Tyler James), Jade Moran (Tyrone, Tyson, Titan), and Jasmine Colombe (Kataleah Rose Marie, Kingsley Ron Marvin). Her husband Rennie Waugh Jr., and 4 siblings; James “Jim” Williams, Katherine “Kathy” Williams, Marylee Williams and Jeffrey Williams.

Stanley Herman Maier “Snuce”, 87

Stanley Herman Maier “Snuce”, 87, of rural Carter SD passed away May 18, 2022, at Sioux Falls McKennan Hospital. 

Funeral service was held on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Winner, SD.  Burial  followed in the Winner City Cemetery. 

Snuce was born March 25, 1935, to Herman and Anna Maier at Pahapesto Township in northern Tripp County.  He graduated from Witten High School May 13, 1955.  That fall he joined the United States Army where he served his country for 2 years before returning home in September 1957.

June 3, 1961, Stanley married Carol Mae Earll.  They had 3 children and made their home in Pahapesto Township where they raised cattle and hogs.

For 60 years, Snuce and Carol welcomed pheasant and deer hunters from all parts of the country into their home.  A good many laughs were shared at the Ship, Captain, Crew table and lifetime friendships created.  Snuce cherished these friendships.  He started planning and looking forward to the next season before the previous one had even ended.

Snuce loved his social time with family and friends.  A visitor to his home quickly became a friend.  The coffee pot was usually on and there was always a story to share over pie/cake.  Snuce sure enjoyed his sweets and snacks especially his popcorn, ice cream and chocolate.

Snuce was known for his good natured wit and life lasting nicknames: Mokey, Bo, Pokey, Midge, Coken, Washo, Festus and Herbie to name a few.  He enjoyed teasing the kids by offering a finger to pull and a hand to shake.  In his later years, Snuce became a hugger and cherished his family time.

Snuce is survived by his children:  Leslie, Bonnie (Lowell), and Dennis (Karla); Grandchildren:  Elizabeth (Stephen), Hailey (Jeremiah), Ashlyn (Bryan), Kristin, Colton (Ricki) and Darcy (Colter); Great-Grandchildren:  Kaysen, Karsten, Addison, Ellah, Greysen, Olivia, Carter and Ryken; foster Great-Grandchildren:  Alayna and Aubree; his sister Lavonne; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Carol, parents Herman and Anna, brother Gene, sister Virginia in infancy, great-grandson Bentley and special friend Darlene.

Memorial Day closings

Government offices in Winner will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

The Tripp County courthouse and the library will be closed.

Winner city office will be closed on Memorial Day.

All state and federal offices in Winner will not be open on Monday.

The Winner post office will be closed on Memorial Day and there will be no mail delivery.

Financial institutions in Winner and Colome will not be open for business on Memorial Day.

There will be noon meal served on Monday at the senior citizens center.

Southern Plains Behavioral Health will be closed on Monday.

Memorial Day Service Speaker

Rick Williamson will be the speaker at the Memorial Day service in Winner on May 30 at 11 a.m. The service will be at the Winner Cemetery and will feature the Avenue of Flags.

Williamson was elected to a four year term on the VFW’s national council of administration in Orlando, Fla., representing the department of South Dakota.

He retired from the South Dakota Army National Guard in 2005 after 23 year of service. He earned his VFW eligibility by serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In recognition of his service, he received the Iraq Campaign medal with two stars, combat action badge, valorous commendation medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Army achievement medal with four oak leaf clusters.

Williamson joined the VFW in 2005 at post 3164 in Canton where he maintains his gold legacy life membership. He has served in elected and appointed positions at the post, district and department levels, culminating with his election as department commander in 2017, in which he received All-American status.

On the national level, he has served on the general resolutions committee, Iraq/Afghanistan veterans committee, committee on national convention ad as deputy chief of staff.

He is employed by Johnson Feed Inc.

He is a life member of the VFW national home for children ad a member of the American Legion.

Williamson and his wife, Cindy, reside in Canton.

The Winner VFW and Auxiliary plus the Winner American Legion, auxiliary will be doing the honors at the cemetery.

In addition, the two organizations will be doing the honors at the following cemeteries: 8:30 a.m. at Novotny cemetery, 9 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic, Clearfield; 9 a.m. Holy Spirit Cemetery, Ideal; 9:30 a.m. Lenker Cemetery, 9:45 a.m. ZCBJ Cemetery.

There will be over 1,000 flags put up in the cemetery.

An important part of the Memorial Day event is the Avenue of flags where flags are put up at the cemetery.

Volunteers are needed to put up the flags. The time frame is: May 27 at 1 p.m. place crosses and small flags by veterans grave sites.

May 29 at 4 p.m. lay poles by holes. At 6 a.m. May 30 the flags will be put up.

At 4 p.m. on May 30 the flags will be taken down and folded.
