Wrestlers Win Big Dakota

The Winner Area wrestling team won the Big Dakota Conference wrestling tournament Saturday in Ft. Pierre.

Champions for Winner were Kaden Keiser at 103 pounds, Avery Gilchrist at 152 and Kayleb Brozik at 170.

Taking second place for the Warriors were: Wyatt Turnquist, Atlas Willuweit, Trevor Peters.

Aaron Gilchrist and Jayden Schroeder both placed third.

Watzel Shines in Wrestling Victory

The moment Tristan Watzel has been waiting for over four years happened on Senior Night in a wrestling dual with Chamberlain.

In an exhibition match under the spotlight with family and fans cheering the senior on, Watzel pinned Hunter Foltz in 44 seconds. This was Watzel’s first career win and the last time he would wrestle at home.

Warriors Defeat CEB

Winner High School boys basketball team defeated CEB 50-48 on Saturday.

Trevor Bertram scored 19 points, Wyatt Ewing, Drew DeMers, 9 each; Isaac Naasz, 6 and Brandon Volmer, 4.

Naasz pulled down 7 rebounds, Bertram 6 and Ewing, 5.  Volmer and DeMers both had 4 assists.

The next action for Winner will be Feb. 10 at McLaughlin and Feb. 14 at home hosting Platte/Geddes.

Todd Co Nips Warriors

Winner High School boys basketball team was nipped 44-43 by Todd County on Jan. 30 in Winner.  The Warriors led 25-21 at the half.

Drew DeMers led the scoring with 18 points followed by Trevor Bertram with 15 points.

Chase Kingsbury, Brandon Volmer and Wyatt Ewing all pulled down 4 rebounds.

DeMers and Bertram each 3 assists and Luke Engel had 3 steals.

Cowboys Boys Basketball Rolling

Colome Cowboys improved its record to 10-2 with 54-50 victory over Kimball/White Lake on Jan. 31.

Holden Thieman led the scoring with 19 points followed by Will Cahoy with 12 points.  Colome out-rebounded Kimball 25-24. Jackson Kinzer pulled down 8 rebounds, Kolton Salonen, 6 and Holden Thieman and Kelly O’Bryan with 5 each.  Cahoy and O’Bryan had 6 assists.

On Friday, the Cowboys defeated Andes Central/Dakota Christian 55-47 and on Saturday Colome played in the Highmore Classic and defeated Harrold 57-54.

On Friday, Colome defeated AC/DC 55-47. The Cowboys received balanced scoring with Holden Thieman scoring 23 points, Kelly O’Bryan, 11; Kolton Salonen, 10 and Jackson Kinzer, 9.  Colome out-rebounded AC/DC 31-18. O’Bryan pulled down 7 rebounds with 6 each from Salonen, Holden Thieman and Jackson Kinzer.

On Saturday, Holden Thieman scored 28 points and Kolton Salonen added 16.

Lady Warriors Pick Up Two Wins

Winner girls basketball team defeated Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 66-44 on Saturday.

Bella Swedlund led the scoring for Winner with 20 points followed by Chloe Bartels with 9.  Gabby Kocer pulled down 8 rebounds with Bartels, Abby Marts and Sydney Hollenbeck with 6 each.

Madyson’s Frazier’s double double helped Winner to a 72-50 victory over Crow Creek on Thursday.

Frazier had 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.   Bartels scored 17 points and Swedlund had 16 points and 9 rebounds.

Winner will play in McLaughlin on Friday.

Colome Falls to Chamberlain

Lyman defeated the Colome girls basketball team 65-36 on Jan. 30.Chamberlain defeated the Colome girls basketball team in the Highmore Classic on Saturday.

Callie Heath scored 10 points and Makayla Shippy, 7.Chamberlain won the game 36-15.

Abby Kortan led the Cowgirls with 7 points. Callie Heath grabbed 3 rebounds. Heath pulled down 12 of Colome’s 25 rebounds.

Colome will host Kadoka on Feb. 10.

Wrestlers Place 6th in Aberdeen

Winner Area wrestling team took sixth place at the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen on Jan. 28.

First place went to Wyatt Turnquist at 113 pounds.

Atlas Willuweit, 120, took second place.

Kayleb Brozik and Tre Doren both took third place.

Kaden Keiser took fifth place. Also taking 5th, was Jayden Schroeder.

Trevor Peters, 126, took 7th place.  Landon Debus, 138, took 7th

Riggin Shippy placed 8th

The wrestlers will compete in the Big Dakota Conference tournament on Feb. 4 in St. Pierre.

Lady Warriors Win Thriller Over Miller

A shot by Gabby Kocer in the second overtime propelled the Winner Lady Warriors to a 77-76 victory over Miller on Jan. 23.

The game was tied at the end of regulation play and first overtime ended in a 7-7 tie. In the second overtime, Winner outscored Miller 16-15.

Kocer was the leading scorer with 20 points followed by Bella Swedlund with 17, Madyson Frazier, 16 and 9 each from Rachel Sherman and Morgan Hammerbeck.

The Lady Warriors pulled down 44 rebounds and were led by Hammerbeck with 9, Sherman and Sydney Hollenbeck with 7 each.
Frazier had 6 assists.
