Winner/Colome high school baseball team got back on the winning track with a sweep of Rapid City on Saturday.

In the first game, Winner won 8-7 and took the second game 7-5.

Riley Calhoon’s inside the park home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Royals the lead. He finished with home run, single and 4 RBIs.   Carter Brickman had a triple, single and 2 RBIs and Dalton Baker had 2 singles and 2 RBIs.

Ty Bolton started in the mound and pitched two innings giving up 4 runs (3 earned), 5 hits.  Calhoon pitched four innings in relief and earned the win. He gave up 3 runs, 4 hits.  Brickman earned the save by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

In the second game, Kelly O’Bryan had a triple, single and scored 2 runs. Calhoon had a double, single and 2 RBIs and Brickman had a triple.

Levi McClanahan started on the mound for the Royals and pitched three innings giving up 3 unearned runs.

DeMers earned the win by pitching 3 innings in relief, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits.

Nick Lantz pitched a scoreless 7th inning to earn the save.

Winner/Colome amateur baseball team opened the season at home on Sunday as they hosted Dimock-Emery.

The visiting team edged the Pheasants 6-5. Phil Johnson hit the game winning RBI single in the top of the ninth inning.

Winner/Colome’s Jared Donahue took the loss in relief allowing four earned runs in three innings pitched with two strikeouts and five walks.

Austin Richey had 3 hits including two doubles while Derek Graesser had two hits including a triple.

Winner/Colome will play Four Corners in Winner on Saturday at 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Winner/Colome will host Corsica/Stickney at 5 p.m. at Leahy Bowl.

Winner/Colome club baseball team defeated Lead-Deadwood by a score of 9-4 on May 7, but fell to St. Thomas More 11-3.

Holden Thieman had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Kelly O’Bryan had a triple.

Ty Bolton took the loss throwing four innings, allowing an earned run.

The Cavaliers five run sixth inning put the game away.

Earlier in the day, Winner/Colome defeated Lead-Deadwood 9-4.

Drew DeMers had two hits and two stolen bases while Carter Brickman and Bolton each had two RBIs.
Brickman threw 4 1/3 innings allowing three hits and no earned runs.
O’Bryan and DeMers teamed up to record the final eight outs.

Winner/Colome baseball team fell to Platte 4-2 on May 8.

Nick Lantz started on the mound and pitched three innings giving up four runs on 8 hits and no walks.  Levi McClanahan pitched three innings of relief and had 4 strikeouts.
Drew DeMers had a 2 RBI double.

The Royals fell to Pierre 14-1 on May 10.

Pierre scored 8 runs in the third inning.
Holden Thieman, Drew DeMers and Joren Bruun each pitched in the loss.
Riley Calhoon had a RBI double and Colby Kaiser and Kameron Meiners each had singles.

It was a dream day for the Winner High School boys track team as they won first place in two events at the 92nd running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls.

Plus it was a special day for senior Cameron Kuil who placed third in the special 200 and won a Howard Wood gold medal scholarship.

In the 4×200 the Warriors used a big push from Kuil at the wire to win the Class A meet title. The Warriors won the race in 1:31.52. Runners were Riley Calhoon, Brady Fritz, Drew DeMers and Cameron Kuil.

Less than three hours later Winner did it again winning the Class A 4×100 relay in a time of :44.27.4. Runners were Riley Calhoon, Isaac Naasz, Drew DeMers and Kuil.

Kuil ran the anchor leg moving the Warriors from fourth place went he took the baton to first at the finish line.
Kuil was asked what was going through his mind when he got the baton. “I knew I had to give it my all. We talk about my closing speed and I try to use that to my advantage.”

Naasz said it feels good to get the trophy because Winner has not had a first place victory in a long time at Howard Wood. “It feels pretty good to bring something back to Winner especially in track because that doesn’t happy very often.”

DeMers said he got out to a good start. “I knew I had a lot of pressure on myself because I did not want to let Cameron down.” Kuil took it from there and made up the time to give the Warriors a victory.

Calhoon said the four some wanted to make sure we have good handoffs and practiced hard so the time was just right.

Coach Larry Aaker said “We knew going in we had a pretty good shot of doing well in the boys 4×100 and 4×200. The boys are extremely competitive, they want to compete for each other and they were very focused on getting the job done.

“We knew that if we could put Cameron in a good position that our chances of winning were a little higher than everyone else’s just because of Cameron’s speed and his ability to finish races. Credit the first three legs in both races for running extremely well and getting the baton around,” said Aaker.

Kuil’s weekend of running started on Friday night. He was one of eight athletes chosen to run in the special 200 meter dash. He joins a list of other Winner athletes, both male and female, who have had their day in the spotlight at the special Howard Wood events.

Kuil took third in the 200 in :22.17 just behind Bismarck, ND. Legacy’s Alex Brosseau in :22.08.

Kuil admitted he was balancing both nerves and excitement as he climbed into the starting blocks in lane five. He said he spent a lot of time focusing on his start.

“The special 200 was a great race for Cameron,” said Larry Aaker. “He represented himself, the school and the Winner track team very well. As a coach it’s great to see a kid rewarded and I know Cameron had a lot of fun and it is something that he will remember the rest of his life.”

Aaker said the Winner girls had a great weekend on the track. “I am really proud of how well they ran and competed. Their success was kind of overshadowed by the boys two victories but these girls keep getting better each and every meet. Four of the five relays ran their fastest time of the year.”

Sidda Schuyler also ran her fastest time of the season in the mile.

The girls 4×100 relay ran a time of 54.45. Runners were Alexis Richey, Morgan Hammerbeck, Madison Thieman and Ellie Brozik.

The 4×800 relay took fourth in 9:54.11. Making up this relay were Chloe Bartels, Saige Schuyler, Sidda Schuyler and Sam Schuyler

The girls medley relay took 5th place with runners Alexis Richey, Ellie Brozik, Chloe Bartels and Sam Schuyler. Their time was 4:22.30.

The 4×400 relay qualified for the state track meet in a time of 4:15.15. Runners were Alexis Richey, Chloe Bartels, Morgan Hammerbeck and Sam Schuyler.

The girls 4×200 relay was made up of Alexis Richey, Morgan Hammerbeck, Katherine Jankauskas and Ellie Brozik. They ran a 1:52.54.

Ellie Brozik ran the prelims of the 100 meter dash in :13.55.

Sidda Schuyler ran the two mile in 11:40.44 and the mile in 5:30.60.

Other results on the boys side, Kayleb Brozik ran the prelims of the 400 in :53.89.

Izak Moleterno ran the 2 mile in 10:35.90 and the mile in 4:51.37.

Jayden Schroeder threw the shot put with a throw of 45-03 and he also threw the discus.

The boys medley relay team ran a time of 4:22.30. Making up this relay were Riley Calhoon, Drew DeMers, Cameron Kuil and Izak Moleterno.

All in all, Winner did very well at the Dakota Relays.

Also, Kuil won the Dakota Relays scholarship with a special presentation made Saturday afternoon. Coach Aaker said he wanted to congratulate Cameron on being the scholarship winner.

The next meet for Winner is the regional in Martin on May 18.

Matt Campbell led the Colome track team at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls this weekend.

The Colome senior threw both the shot put and the discus and placed third in each event.

Campbell started Saturday morning off with the shot put and had a third place throw of 52-09.

Later in the afternoon, Campbell threw the discus and had a throw of 166-11.

The Cowboys 4×200 relay took sixth place in 1:35.06. The Colome boys 4×100 relay took 11th in :46.44. Runners on both squads are Chase Dufek, Jackson Kinzer, Holden Thieman and Beau Bertram.

The Colome girls 4×100 relay team took fifth place in :53.01. Runners are Matrix Noteboom, Kaydee Heath, Saydee Heath and Callie Heath.

This same group of four Colome girls ran the 4x200in 1:56.37.

Saydee Heath ran the prelims in the 100 in :13.39.

Bertram ran the prelims of the 100 in :12.01.

Kelly O’Bryan competed in the triple jump in 40-05.

The next meet for Colome will be the regional on May 18.

Winner boys and girls track teams swept the team title at the Meet of Legends in Burke on May 2.

The Winner girls held off Colome by four points 71-67.

The WHS boys scored 103 points.

The Lady Warriors medley relay team pre-qualified for state by running a time of 4:28.

Runners were Morgan Hammerbeck, Alexis Richey, Chloe Bartels and Samantha Schuyler.

The meet absorbed many more teams that were supposed to be participating at the cancelled Don Riede Relays in Freeman. Instead of eight teams there were 17 in Burke.

Colome girls track team took second place at the Meet of Legends in Burke on May 2.

The Cowgirls scored 67 points.   The Colome boys took fifth place with 52 points.

Callie Heath won the 400 and Saydee Heath won the long jump.

Winner Area girls golf team won first place at the Chamberlain Invitational on April 24.
Ronae Klein won first place as she shot a 90. Addy Root, 2nd, 96; Liz Jankauskas, 4th, 100; Sam Marts, 6th, 106.

The next action for the golfers will be May 5 at Stanley County.

Winner High School boys and girls teams both won the Cecil Johnson Invitational in Presho on Thursday.

Two more Winner athletes pre-qualified for the state track meet. Sam Schuyler qualified in the 800 and Izak Moleterno in the 3200.

The Colome boys track team tied for third place with Gregory at the Platte-Geddes Relays on Saturday.

The Colome boys won the 4×100 relay and the 4×200 relay. The Cowboys won the 400 relay in :46.77 and the 800 relay in 1:37.16.

Holden Thieman won the 400 in :53.98.

Matt Campbell won both the discus and the shot put. The Colome senior had a throw of 50-8 in the shot put and 162-5 in the discus.
