Galbraith Climbs in Record Book

Sharee Galbraith of Winner continues to climb up the Dakota State University women’s basketball record book for all-time blocks.
Galbraith has 45 blocks this season which is the second best in the NAIA and her average of 10 rebounds a game is 13th best in the nation.
In her DSU career, Galbraith has 145 blocks, which is the fifth most career blocks in the DSU history and is six blocks behind Sara Nelson for fourth most all-time career blocks with 151.

Wrestlers Place Fifth

Winner Area wrestling team placed fifth at the Mid-Dakota Monster in Presho this weekend.  Nine Winner Area wrestlers placed.

Jayden Schroeder, 195, wrestled in the finals and placed second as he lost 3-2 in overtime to Cole Schelske of Lyman.

Kayleb Brozik, 170, took third as he won 11-3 over Tate Gatzke of Belle Fourche.

Fourth place went to Wyatt Turnquist and Colby Curtis.  Turnqusit, 106, lost 4-1 to Chance Grill of Custer.  Curtis was pinned in 2:45 by Caden Moore of O’Neill.

Trevor Peters, 120, took sixth place as he lost 5-4 to Weston Ireland of Bennett County.

Taking 7th were Aaron Gilchrist, Avery Gilchrist and Riggin Shippy. Aaron Gilchrist, 113, won 10-8 in overtime over Alec Dodson of Kingsbury County.  Avery Gilchrist, 145, pinned Tucker Holzer of Mobridge-Pollock in 1:36.   Shippy, 152, won 4-3 over Reese Hansen of Spearfish.

Taking 8th place was Cohl Turnquist, 182, who was pinned in :21 by Tristan Madsen of Hot Springs.

Warriors Fall to Chamberlain

Winner boys basketball team fell to Chamberlain 65-52 on Jan. 5.
“We were kind of disappointed to give up 65 points and also to have one kid score 31 points against us,” said coach Brett Gardner. “Hats off to Chamberlain as they are a nice team and did a nice job of controlling the game,” said the coach.
Leading the scoring for Winner was Devon Leiferman with 14 points followed by Lattrel Terkildsen with 10 and Cameron Kuil with 8.  Leiferman pulled down 7 boards and Krockett Krolikowski with 6.  Terkildsen had 3 assists.

Harter Scores 32 Points in Colome Victory

Reed Harter scored 32 points to lead the Colome Cowboys to a 69-48 victory over Lyman on Jan. 5.

“It was a nice win against a quality opponent, especially when we didn’t necessarily play our best,” said coach Drew Weber.

Holden Thieman added 14 points and Jackson Kinzer, 11.  Thieman pulled down 13 of Colome’s 34 rebounds. Harter grabbed 6 rebounds.

“We didn’t shoot overly well and turned the ball over more than usual but we were able to grind out a pretty nice win,” said Weber. “I was especially pleased with the way the bench came in and contributed in all facets of the game. If we can keep getting solid production out of them we will be able to continue having success,” said the coach.

With the victory, Colome improved to 4-2.

Wrestlers Down Stanley County

Winner Area wrestling team defeated Stanley County 51-24 in a dual Jan. 5 in Winner.
“The boys really did a nice job coming out ready to go,” said coach Matt Chambers. “I thought we wrested well as a team even in a couple of the matches we lost. We were able to get five pins in the dual which is huge for team points.”

Winner’s five pins were recorded by Jaikob Week, Trevor Peters, Colby Curtis, Cameron Biggins and Jayden Schroeder.

Lady Warriors down Todd County

Winner High School girls basketball team defeated Todd County 56-48 Thursday in Winner.  With the victory the Lady Warriors improve to 6-2 for the season.

Allison Cox led the scoring for Winner with 13 points followed by Chloe Bartels with 11, Bailey Volmer, 10 and Sydney Fritz with 9.

Fritz hauled down 9 of Winner’s 33 rebounds. Bartels and Cox each had 5 rebounds.

In a back to back game, the Winner Lady Warriors defeated Gregory 72-19 Saturday.

Thirteen Lady Warriors scored in this game. Leading the scoring for WHS was Allison Cox with 13 points. Sydney Fritz added 9 points.  The rebounds were spread among the team with Hanna LaCompte and Cox pulling down 4 rebounds.

The victory improved Winner’s record to 7-2.

Todd County downs Colome

Todd County defeated the Colome girls basketball team 64-36 on Jan. 9 in Mission.

Callie Heath led Colome with 17 points.  Mariah Kinzer pulled down 10 rebounds.
Stevie Long Dog led Todd County with 18 points.

Todd County won the junior varsity game 46-11.

The next action for Colome girls is Jan. 14 at Burke/South Central.

Eight Wrestlers Place in Salem

Winner Area wrestling team took sixth place at the McCook Central tournament in Salem on Jan. 2.  Eight Winner area wrestlers placed in the tournament.  There were 19 teams in the tournament with Canton taking first place.  “This was our first time at this very good tournament with several top teams and many of the top wrestlers in Class B,” said coach Matt Chambers.

Wyatt Turnquist took third place with a 6-2 win over Parker Snyder of Philip Area.
Trevor Peters placed 5th as he won 7-1 over Martin Ruelas of Flandeau.
Colby Curtis took 7th as he won by injury default over Colby Fitch of Philip area.
Cameron Biggins and Avery Gilchrist both took 5th place. Biggins won by pin in 2:24 over Grant Plucker of Parker.
Gilchrist won by a pin in 37 seconds over Jayden Even of Parker.
Kayleb Brozik took 4th place as he lost 7-4 to Jesse Mikrut of Wolsey-Wessington.
Cohl Turnquist took 6th place as he was pinned by Blake Crowser of Philip Area in 1:48.
Jayden Schroeder placed 4th as he was pinned in 2:46 by Tyson Serr of Burke/Gregory.

“As a team, I thought we looked a little up and down, everyone really looked good at times which is a great positive. I also thought we left a few team points out there in matches that we could have either won or wrestled a little better,” said the coach. “Overall, it was a good showing coming out of break against some very good competition,” said Chambers.
