Blue Jacket Program provides 3,000th jacket to FFA members

To its owner, the FFA jacket is a physical reminder of the personal accomplishments achieved through the organization – a symbol of commitment and dedication for all who wear the corduroy. This fall, the SD FFA Foundation celebrated 15 years of the Blue Jacket Program and awarded its 3000th FFA jacket to a member. In October, 404 South Dakota FFA members from 81 chapters, will receive their own FFA jackets – carrying forward that long-standing tradition of pride, dignity and honor. Jackets were sponsored by various individuals through the SD FFA Foundation program, welcoming new members into the fabric of FFA.

FFA members filled out the Blue Jackets Bright Futures FFA Jacket Program application, answering short essay questions about their FFA experience and goals, competing to earn their own FFA jacket instead of purchasing one.

Winner and Colome FFA members who received a jacket are:

Winner—Roper Moore and Brianna Gilchrist, sponsored by Wendy Mortenson agency.

Colome—Emma Nelsen, Wendy Mortenson agency; Raelynn Kingsley, Wendy Mortenson agency and Seth Heath—Pioneer-Corteva.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Winner, SD. Visitation was held one hour prior to the services. Burial will be held at a later date.

Helen was born on Nov. 19, 1939 in Waterbury, Neb., to the parents of Goldie and Lynn Frank. Her dad was in the Air Force so Helen grew up traveling around the world. After high school she came to Dallas, SD where she met Bill Lebert. They got married and lived out on Bill’s family farm in rural Dallas. Here they raised their four children: Tammy, Joan, Carla, & Oren.

Going from city life to farm life was a big change for Helen, but she did it with so much love and hard work. She loved cooking, baking, and gardening along with being involved in family circle, the church, and get together with all her friends and neighbors.

Helen and Bill lost their son, Oren, at a very young age to a tragic farm accident. Life moving on was hard for Helen. As time went by and the girls grew up, they began to leave the farm. Tammy joined the military and later got married and had a son, Roy. Joan married Larry Sargent who was also a farmer and they had two sons, Craig and Will. Carla went off to school in Mitchell but never married.

Helen remarried BJ Bateman. They traveled a lot but ended up settling down in Winner. By this time Helen has great grandkids who she loved so deeply: Jude, Oren, Elsie, Wakely, Wynn, Morgan, Isabella, Jazmyne, & Alyxzandria.

Helen lost her husband BJ to cancer in 2009. Helen and Carla then moved in together where Carla helped take care of her until Carla passed away due to Covid in October of 2021.

Helen and her little dog Angel then moved to the Golden Prairie Manor. Everyone there just loved her. She would always say how nice everyone was. She had so much love for everyone.

Helen will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, BJ, her son, Oren Lebert, and daughter Carla Lebert. Her grandson, Will Sargent, parents, Lynn and Goldie Frank, and siblings, Jack, Mick, Phil, Margret Ann, Pat, and Betty.

She is survived by her children: Tammy Turner, Joan (Larry) Sargent; grandchildren: Roy Turner, Craig (Heather) Sargent; great grandchildren: Jude, Oren, and Elsie Sargent; Wakely and Wynn Sargent, Isabella McNeal, Jazmyne and Alyxzandria Turner; siblings Dick Frank and Diane Vetor, close family Therese  & Jayd Knodell and Morgan, along with in laws and many nieces and nephews.

Donor Appreciation Social

The Winner Regional Health and Wellness Foundation recently hosted a Donor Appreciation Social on Sept. 20 at Winner Regional Health’s clinic.

This event was to recognize the donors for the 2022 Driven to Serve Campaign for those who were so instrumental in helping secure the new 3D Mammography. It provided an opportunity for a ribbon cutting, a plaque to recognize the donors, and a first look at the new piece of technology that will allow the surrounding community members to receive advanced healthcare services on a local level.

“Words can not express how humbling it is to see a community come together for the greater good of their neighbors, coworkers, family, friends, and beyond. While I have had the opportunity to fundraise for various projects and in significantly larger communities, I can say that I have never seen a community pull together so unified in such little time and with such great force,” said Brady Kerkman, director of marketing & philanthropy.

What started as a two year goal, was quickly achieved in less than five months. The surrounding communities secured the $300,000 needed to purchase the new technology and the necessary maintenance agreement to protect us from defects and possible maintenance issues.

Success such as this shall not go unrecognized. Therefore, it was the foundation’s honor to host an event that provided hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to visit on a casual level.

“While this event did not encompass everyone who has been so instrumental over the years, we see it as a starting point to bring to light the strong commitment Winner Regional Health and Wellness Foundation is surrounded by. On behalf of Winner Regional Health and Wellness Foundation, we appreciate all of your support for this worthy cause and look forward to the community benefiting from the fruits and labor of the 2022 Driven to Serve Campaign,” added Kerkman.
