The Winner High School competitive dance team placed third in both pom and kick at the meet in Gregory on Saturday.

“Being the first competition of the season, I was pleased with our performance,” said coach Cyndy DeMers.

“Utilizing the judges comments, we know what areas we need to work on. Our goal is to continue to improve our scores each competition,” said DeMers.

Winner will host its own meet on Sept. 10.

Art Kemp will celebrate his 100th birthday Sept. 10.

The family will host an open house in his honor on Sept. 10 at the Holiday Inn Express in Winner from 2-4 p.m.

Over 100 youths took part in the Outdoor Youth Day Saturday at the Rosebud Arrow, Rod and Gun Club.

The event was sponsored by Pheasants Forever, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Rosebud Arrow, Rod and Gun Club and National Wild Turkey Federation.

The cool Saturday morning did not dampen the spirit of the youths attending. Helping these youths were over 50 volunteers.

Several stations were set up where youths could learn about archery, take part in a mock pheasant hunt, feel what it was like to be in goose blind and what to do to call in the geese. There were several shooting stations, lessons on castings and turkey and goose calling and sling shot.

The Winner High School chapter of Future Farmers of America helped and provided a bean bag game.  A lunch was served at noon and prizes were handed out including a drawing for several guns.  The afternoon show was put on by Patrick Flanigan, an Xtreme sport shooter. Flanigan holds nine shooting records. In addition to shooting clay pigeons, he shot everything from eggs to golf balls.

The day before coming to Winner, Flanigan had a show in Minnesota.

The parade theme has been chosen for the Winner Labor Day Parade. The theme is “Salute to American Heroes.”
The parade marshal will be the local troops who recently returned home from deployment.

The Winner Labor Day parade will be held on Sept. 5.

The Cloverbud Corner participants in the Mid Dakota Fair include: Ash Kaiser, Ryann Assman, Jedediah Blare, Coy Shelbourn, Lena DeMers, Brianca DeMers, Carley Fisher, Melachi Kelly, Jaelyn Assman, Rylan Assman, Debra Harris, JadeLynn McCall, Rustin Schroeder, Easton Shippy, Benny King, Ryken Kaup, Hudson Kaup.

Bailey Fairbanks of Winner competed at the state 4-H horse show in Huron.

She earned purple ribbons in both beginner western horse showmanship and beginner stock seat equitation.
She competed as an individual in the horse judging contest and the hippology contest.

The Tripp County horse quiz bowl team made it to the fourth round which is the highest a Tripp County team has accomplished at the state 4-H horse show quiz bowl. The team members are Ellenor Harris, Zoe Harris, Selah Harris and Bailey Fairbanks.

John and Lillian Taggart, Northglenn, Colo., formerly from Colome, recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
They celebrated their anniversary with their children Doug (Polly) Taggart, Jerry (Janine) Taggart, Karen (Jerry) King, Bradley Taggart and Robert (Kim) Taggart, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish church in Northglenn.

A large crowd feasted on the wonderful flavor of barbeque ribs and brisket at the Winner Area Chamber of Commerce Pit Row BBQ Saturday evening on Main Street.
There were 14 teams in the contest and the hungry customers were able to sample a wide variety of food in addition to vote on a people’s choice side dish.
Here are the winners in the rib contest.  They are listed in the order they placed.
First place went to Smoke N Ribblets. Also placing were The Money Pit, Grossenburg Implement, Smoke Encounters of the Third Swine, Midnight Ranch, Two Monkeys and a Warrior BBQ, Totally Smoked BBQ, Low Cash Cowboys, Case in Point, R. J. Bones, Winner Volunteer Fire Department, Smoking Bull BBQ, It’s Whatever and Redneck Ribs.
For the third year in a row Totally Smoked BBQ won first place for best brisket. They were followed in placing by Smoking Bull BBQ, It’s Whatever, R. J. Bones, Smoke N Ribblets, Two Monkeys and a Warrior BBQ, Smoked Encounters of the Third Swine, The Money Pit, Grossenburg Implement, Low Cash Cowboys, Winner Volunteer Fire Department, Redneck Ribs, Case in Point, and Midnight Ranch.
The people’s choice winner for a side dish went Low Cash Cowboys with their Southern Spuds.
There was music, a bean bag contest and a photo scavenger hunt all part of the fun an activities of the Winner Chamber of Commerce Event.

Stephen Bautista will present an evening of music Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Vet’s Hall in Colome starting at 7 p.m.

Admission is free and there will be a free will offering.  Bautista is a singer/songwriter based out of Las Vegas, Nev.  He travels around the country with his wife and eight kids to share his Christ-centered music.
When asked what his music sounds like he is often at a loss to fit it into a particular genre, “but I often hear the name James Taylor when people describe how my music sounds to them. It can be very upbeat, but also very mellow and solemn.”  All of his music is original.

He has three CDs that were professionally produced and recorded in Nashville, Tenn.

Winner Community Playhouse will hold auditions for a fall production on Aug. 15-16 at 7 p.m. at the playhouse.
A comedy is planned for Sept. 30-Oct. 1 and Oct. 7-8 and will be directed by Sandra York.
