Colome FFA places in district contest

Colome had four teams participate in the FFA district contest in Tyndall on March 17.

This was the first time for Colome competing in Career Development Events due to COVID last year.

In floriculture, Emma Vandenbark placed 18th out of 50 individuals.

The horse evaluation team placed 9th out of 10 teams. The individual placings are: Aleah Musser, 38th; Keasha Kartak, 37th; Shaleena Kingsley, 29th and Raylynn Dehning, 33rd out of 39.

The livestock evaluation team placed 8th out of 14 teams. Individual placings are: Jesse Larson, 17th; Klayton Heath, 15th; Sully Shippy, 34th; Jack Anderson, 25th out of 55 individuals.

The poultry evaluation team placed 6th out of 8 teams. Individual winners were  Joseph Laprath, 21st; Morgan Gill, 15th; Kash Heath, 20 out of 32 individuals.

Morgan Gill will be attending the state convention April 12-13 in Rapid City as the District 4 secretary.

Four Winner FFA teams  qualified for state  at the  district event in Tyndall.

Ag Mechanics placed 2nd and advances to state. Chase Boerner placed 3rd, Adam Bohnet placed 8th, Aaron Gilchrist placed 9th, and James Gregg also competed.

Vet Science placed 4th and advances to state. Meagan Blare placed 8th and Maggie DeMers placed 11th. Other team members include Trista Kierstead, Madaline Watzel and Sierra McCall.

Horse Evaluation placed 4th and advances to state. Emily Sachtjen placed 1st, Bailey Fairbanks placed 12th and Tyler Brockman also competed.

Floriculture placed 5th and advances to state. Teresa Taylor placed 2nd. Other team members include Justin Hausmann, Clay Sell, Keyleigh Stands, and Alisha Ammon

Livestock placed 10th. Team members included Browdy Kocer, Rowdy Moore, Rylee Schroeder, Amanda Blare

and Coy Assman.

Meats Evaluation placed 8th. Spencer Calhoon placed 10th and Ryan Sell also competed.

The Winner FFA also placed in other events.

They competed in the McCook Central CDE on March 8.

Vet science placed fifth. Maggie DeMers was 18th, Meagan Blare, 21st; Trista Kierstead, 29th; Sierra McCall, 51st and Madeline Watzel, 69th.

Floriculture took 5th. Individually, Teresa Taylor, 5th; Justin Hausmann, 8th; Clay Sell, 63rd; Alisha Ammon, 64th and Kayleigh Stands, 76th.

Meats took 9th with Spencer Calhoon, 24th; Chase Boerner, 32nd and Ryan Sell, 38th

On March 10 the FFA went to the Brule County livestock CDE. Horse took 5th with Emily Sachtjen, 10th; Bailey Fairbanks, 13th and Tyler Brockman, 27th.

Livestock was 10th with Rylee Schroeder, 18th; Amanda Blare, 28th; Rowdy Moore, 34th; Browdy Kocer, 43rd and Coy Assman, 47th.

Due to COVID-19 protocol, individual medals were not presented at the state tournament

COVID continues to decrease

Tripp County reported one new case of COVID-19 on Monday.

The total number of active cases has decreased as there are only 16 active cases.

Since the pandemic started the total confirmed cases is 613 in the county. There have been 16 deaths in Tripp County.

Statewide, there were 86 new cases and 19 probable.

The number of active cases is 2,244. Statewide, the total number of recovered cases is 111,805. There are 62 persons currently hospitalized.

The number of deaths in the state is 1,923.

Donald E. Knecht, 85

Donald E. Knecht, 85, of Houghton passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen after a weeklong battle with Covid. 

A private family funeral service was held Saturday, March 6 at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen, with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. 

Burial will be at a later date.

Donald Eugene Knecht was born on May 29, 1935, the oldest child of Elmer and Viola (Ole) (Hansen) Knecht in Aberdeen, SD.  Donnie grew up on the farm that he and his dad would one day farm together.   He attended the James School through 8th grade and attended high school in Claremont, graduating in 1953.  Donnie was a proud member of the undefeated Honker’s 6-man championship football team. 

Donnie married the love of his life Doris Mommer on June 29, 1956, in Aberdeen.   They made their home on a farm near Houghton, and eventually moved into Houghton, where Donnie continued to live until his death.  Donnie & Doris enjoyed 48 years together.  They loved spending time with family and friends bowling, dancing, playing cards, camping, and traveling to Twins games until Doris passed away in 2004. 

Donnie loved being a farmer, operating machinery, and raising livestock for almost 70 years.  One of his favorite times of year was harvest and running the combine.  There were many great memories made on the farm, especially working with his two sons.  Donnie was always thinking of ways to build or improve things.  He would come up with the ideas and leave it to his sons to put those ideas into action.   He took great pride in the projects they built together.   He was known for teaching the farm dogs many interesting tricks.  Neighbors and friends were always dropping by the farm (Hilltop) to visit and solve the world’s problems or play a game of horseshoe or cards.  No one enjoyed a fresh ear of sweet corn, or a cucumber, radish, or tomato straight from the garden more than Donnie. 

Donnie was a member of the Columbia Masons and Aberdeen Shriners.  He served on the Houghton and North Brown School boards and was a member of the Houghton Congregational Church where he also served on the church council.

Donnie will be greatly missed by his three children: Dawn (Monte) Nipp of Langford, Mick (Becky) Knecht, and Pat Knecht all of Houghton; six grandchildren: Abby (Gavin) Krueger, Zachary Nipp, Megan (Davi) Handa, Matt (Whitney) Knecht, Spencer Knecht and Macy Knecht; two great granddaughters: Gia and Ivy Krueger; five siblings: Karen (Allen) Siefkes, Butch Knecht, Kathy (Rick) Schultz, Chuck (Denise) Knecht, and Karyl (Jeremy) Clay, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister-in-law Betty Knecht, and nephew Tim Knecht.

COVID-19

Tripp County had 23 active cases of COVID-19 as of Monday. On March 15 there were no new confirmed cases.

The total recovered cases is 681.The deaths in Tripp County due to COVID-19 remain at 16.Monday statewide, there were 17 new confirmed cases and 7 new probable cases.

The active cases in the state are 2,106. Currently there are 64 persons hospitalized.

The number of deaths in the state is 1,912.
