Kelsey Bertram of Winner has been named as a candidate for Miss Basketball.

The awards luncheon will be held May 3 at the Ramkota Convention Center in Sioux Falls. The luncheon is open to the public. Doors will open at noon with the awards presentation beginning at 1 p.m.

Twelve women and 13 men, all seniors, were selected as finalists by a vote of the South Dakota high school basketball coaches at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season.

In addition to Bertram, the other candidates for Miss Basketball are: Ellie Brecht, Sioux Falls Lincoln; Darbi Gustafson, Ethan; Danni Honner, Harrisburg; Tagyn Larson, Sioux Falls Roosevelt; Jessica Mieras, Sioux Falls O’Gorman; Rylie Osthus, DeSmet; Sydney Palmer, Pierre Riggs; Ashley Rozell, Warner; Dalee Stene, Sioux Falls O’Gorman; Alexys Swedlund, St. Thomas More and Taylor Volesky, Mitchell.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Augustana women’s head basketball coach Dave Krauth. In his 25^th year at Augie, Krauth became the 20^th Division II women’s basketball coach in history to win 500 career games after an 86-82 win over then No. 12 Minnesota State on Dec. 14.

Kelsey Bertram of Winner has been named to the girls second five of the Argus Leader Media/Sanford Pentagon all-star basketball team.

The senior is a first team all-stater. She had 8.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks a game. Bertram also holds Winner’s single game steals record, getting 118 as a junior and averaging 3.7 a game this season.

Bertram was also Class A’s top distributor with 5.2 assists a game.

“Kelsey led us in every statistical category this year,” said coach Larry Aaker. “She is a player you love to have on your team and don’t want to play against.”

Bertram played in the girls all star game Sunday at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. She played on  White team which was defeated  by the blue team 88-76.

Also playing on the white team was Erin Grimshaw of Todd County.

Playing on the blue team was Darbi Gustafson of Ethan, the daughter of Jeff and Janet Gustafson, formerly of Winner and Colome. Darbi was also named to the second five girls team.

The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association and the Sanford Pentagon sponsored the girls and boys games on Sunday.

The Winner/Colome club baseball team defeated Todd County 15-1 in five innings Saturday at Leahy Bowl.

The Royals started off the first inning with four runs and added nine more in the second inning.

Kelly O’Bryan was the winning pitcher.

Holden Thieman had a triple, double and a single with 2 RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Riley Calhoon had a double and a single with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. Reed Harter had a single, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

Coach Drew Weber said it was nice to get another win early in the year. “We were able to get 16 different guys into the game and we showed some great patience at the plate. Our pitchers did a solid job of throwing strikes and we played OK defensively,” said Weber.

“We have a long way to go to get to where we want to be and that starts by not striking out so much, which we did Saturday. Some of that can be attributed to our youth and inexperience and I feel confident that we will continue to make big strides as the season goes on.”

The junior varsity won 8-7 in five innings on a walk off single by Joren Bruun. Phillip Jorgensen earned the win on the mound.

Winner High School boys track team won the Gregory Invitational with 124 points. Todd County was a close second with 122 points. The meet was held on March 31 and featured 12 teams.

Winner took third place in the girls division.

The Colome boys track team won the medley relay at last Tuesday’s Gregory Invitational.

The team crossed the finish line in 4:05.8. Runners were Chase Hrabanek, Cole McCarty, Jackson Kinzer and Reed Harter.

As a team, the Colome boys placed 9^th.

The next meet for Colome will be held at the SCC meet in Platte on April 7.

Kelsey Bertram of Winner  has been named to the first team of the South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association Class A all-state team.

The 5-9 Bertram had one of the best seasons in Winner girls basketball history. She broke school records for points in a game (46), points in a season (521), 3 pointers in a season (58). She also holds records for free throw percentage in a season (83.3), career (77.8) and steals in a season with 118.

Bertram scored over 1,000 points in her career at Winner High School.

“Kelsey led us in every statistical category this year,” Winner head coach Larry Aaker said. “Kelsey has tremendous desire to be the best, she plays extremely hard and she also strives to make her teammates better. She’s a special player that I was fortunate to coach the past four years,” said Aaker.

Winner/Colome club baseball team opened the season Thursday night with a 7-4 victory over Parkston.

It was a cool night for baseball but a large crowd was on hand for the opening game of the season.

The Royals scored three runs in the second inning after Parkston opened with two runs.

Holden Thieman was the winning pitcher and Reed Harter got the save.

“This was a great win to start the season,” said coach Drew Weber. “Parkston is one of the best teams in the state and we are an awfully young team starting seven underclassmen.”

Winner had five  champions at the state AAU wrestling tournament this weekend in Brookings.

The champions were Kylah Biggins (3x State Champion), Ryken Orel, Maxton Brozik (4x State Champion), Kaden Keiser (2x State Champion) and Wyatt Turnquist.

Winner High School track team had a successful opening of the track season as they competed at the Bill Pistulka Invitational on Friday.

The athletes ran in all types of weather conditions from cold, wind to sun later in the day.

No team points were kept at this meet.

Deloris Herman won both the shot put and discus. Herman won the shot with a throw of 35 feet and the discus with a throw of 107-8.

The Lady Warriors won both the 1600 and sprint medley relays.

In the mile relay, Winner crossed the finish line in 4:38.39. Runners were Chloe Bartels, Kylie Horstman, Alexis Richey and Hayley Halverson.

In the medley relay, Winner finished in 5:03.69. Runners were Sydney Fritz, Kelsey Bertram, Hayley Halverson and Alexis Richey.
