There are 22 girls on Winner High School’s competitive cheer team.

Last year the team placed third in its division and 10th overall at state. “We are hoping to far exceed that this year,” said coach Val Ewing.

The returning letterwinners in cheer are Sidney Bohnet, Kaycee Konvalin, Maddy Hanson, Hannah Hanson, Macy Olson, Bayli Beehler, Hannah Peterson, Rachel Sherman and Sophia Lewis.

Winner/Colome amateur baseball team battled Madison in a slugfest in the second round of the state amateur baseball tournament Aug. 12 in Mitchell.  Madison defeated the Pheasants 17-14 at Cadwell Park.

Mike Barfuss and Eric Bailey were the winners of the 21st annual Ron Waller memorial member guest golf tournament Sunday at Winner Country Club.

The derby winners in the two day golf meet were Rick Godel and Randy Godel with runner-up Jim Halverson and George Johnson.

The team of Mike and Lana Stickland, Larry Aaker and Phil Husher won the championship of the first flight in the Winner Regional Foundation golf tournament on Saturday at Winner Country Club.   Second place in this flight went to Donny and Digger Godel, Stacy Olson and Justin Karst.

Derek Graesser’s 12 strikeouts propelled the Winner/Colome amateur baseball team to 9-3 victory over Groton on Saturday in the state tournament at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Winner/Colome will play Madison at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug, 12, in Mitchell in the next round of the state meet. Groton ended its season at 10-5.

Brandon Bicek of the Winner/Colome Legion baseball team played in the Legion all-star game on Monday, Aug. 3 in Lake Norden. Bicek played on the black team.

The game was hosted by the S.D. Amateur Baseball Coaches Association.

Winner Teeners baseball team were defeated by Mission 11-7 in the regional tournament Thursday in Wagner.  Riley Calhoon was the losing pitcher.

Earlier on Thursday, Winner defeated Wagner 12-11.  Luke Engel was the winning pitcher.

The Teeners opened region play on July 29. Winner defeated Lead-Deadwood 9-6.  Ty Bolton was the winning pitcher.  In the second game last Wednesday, Mission defeated Winner 18-3. Carter Brickman was the losing pitcher.

Winner Teeners closed out the regular season with a 14-10 victory over Gregory on July 27.  Kayleb Brozik was the winning pitcher.

Winner/Colome amateur baseball team will play Groton in the first round of state amateur baseball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 5:30 p.m.   The state tournament is held at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.  The Pheasants earned a berth in the state tournament when they defeated Parkston Mudcats 10-4.
