The Winner dance team finished the season at the State A competition on Oct. 23 in Brandon.

The hip hop team placed 2nd, large pom placed 3rd and kick placed 3rd in individual categories. In overall competition, Winner took fourth place.

“As a coach I am extremely proud of our placement and improvement over the year,” said coach Cyndy DeMers. “We performed well and the competition was very close. This is a difficult sport that takes a lot of energy, stamina and skill. These girls have attended numerous morning practices and worked hard to make this season a success,” said DeMers.

She added team captains Hayley Halverson, Dacey Kocer, Skyler VanDenHul have put in many extra hours on choreography and practice.

  This was the last competition before state.

“It’s been a roller coaster of a season. We have never had a full squad at a performance,” said coach Val Ewing. “We had to rework our routine the morning of the Platte meet due to an injury. I could not be more proud of these girls and their work ethic, determination and desire to do well,” said Ewing.

“They work through pain and frustration and are always looking for ways to improve. They won’t settle for anything less than their best and I am hoping to have that performance at state.”

The No. 1 rated Winner Warriors kept its undefeated football string in tack Friday night as they defeated Redfield/Doland 50-0.  The game ended with 1:48 left to play in the third quarter due to the mercy rule.  This is the fourth shut out for the Warriors who have a 7-0 record.

“Each week we have someone who has a big play or big yardage and it changes each week. Last week Barry did not have a lot of yards and this week he is our rushing leading. We credit that to the unselfishness of our backfield,” explained Aaker.  “I am really happy in the way our defense played as we held them to 27 yards. Our defense is playing well and they are going to have to continue as we go forward,” said the coach.

The Warriors will close out the regular season when they travel to Murdo on Thursday to take on Jones County/White River, a new opponent and a new 11 man team.
Jones County/White River runs a double wing offense similar to Winner.

Colome football team, ranked No. 3 in Class 9B, picked up a 52-0 victory over Tripp-Delmont/Armour Friday in Armour.

The game ended in the second quarter due to the mercy rule.  The Cowboys remain undefeated with a 7-0 record.

Colome will play at Scotland on Thursday to close out the regular season. The first round of the playoffs will start on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Winner High School volleyball team defeated Chamberlain 3-0 on senior night on Oct. 13.  The Lady Warriors won 25-10, 25-15, 25-22.

“It was senior night and our last regular season home match so the girls came out ready and focused to play,” said coach Jaime Keiser. “We did a great job of passing in serve receive. We were aggressive and did a great job of attacking the ball which kept Chamberlain on the defensive end. We played three consistent games which is nice to see with only a few weeks left of the regular season. I was proud of how the girls played together as a team,” said Keiser.

The Lady Warriors will play in the SESD conference tourney on Saturday in Platte.

Colome volleyball team defeated Gregory 3-0 on Oct. 13. The scores were 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.  Colome won the junior varsity match 25-15, 25-21.

The next action for the Cowgirls will be Oct. 23 at Crow Creek and Oct. 26 at home hosting Kimball/White Lake.

Winner Area girls cross country team picked up third place at the Region 4A meet Thursday in Chamberlain and qualified as a team for the state meet.  The Lady Warriors edged out Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and St. Francis to earn the third spot.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton won first place and Todd County took second.

Winner had two runners finish in the top 10 with Chloe Bartels taking 8th and Jaclyn Laprath taking 10th.  Bartels finished in 19:54.94 and Laprath crossed the finish line in 20:10.
Samantha Schuyler finished 15th and Aryn Meiners finished 22nd which was key for the Winner Area team to finish in the third spot.  Megan Blare placed 26th and Hayley Halverson, 40th.

Winner coach Jayd Schuyler said third place was a realistic goal for the team. “We knew we had a chance if we put forth the effort and we had some really solid performances to make the difference,” said Schuyler.

On the boys side, senior Colby Curtis qualified for the state meet by placing 14th in a 18:10.04.  Winner Area boys finished 6th as a team. Also placing for the varsity boys were Grant Winter, 25th; Dawson Phillips, 36th and Wyatt Turnquist, 43rd.

The state cross country meet will be held Oct. 24 in Sioux Falls.

Top rated Winner High School football team remained undefeated with a 43-0 victory Friday night over Parkston. This was the Warriors third shutout of the season.

“We were ready to go at the start of the game and the buildup to the game did not affect us,” said Aaker. “We did a good job of keeping our composure and played solid.”

The Warriors will travel to Redfield on Friday. Redfield/Doland has a 2-5 record.

Sam Hossle of Winner High School competed in the state Class A golf tournament in Milbank Oct. 5-6.

The WHS senior shot a 91-88.

Aberdeen Roncalli won the team title with Parkston taking second.

Winner High School volleyball team was defeated by Tri Valley in the Chester Challenge on Saturday.

Winner took the first two sets 25-10, 25-22.  The Lady Warriors lost the next three to Tri Valley 23-25, 9-25, 3-15.

The Lady Warriors defeated Gregory in four games. The scores were 25-13, 25-15, 21-25 and 25-16.

On Thursday, Winner hosted White River and won 25-14, 25-16 and 25-11.

The next action for the volleyball team will be Oct. 20 at Wagner.
