Winner High School girls basketball team was defeated by St. Thomas More 49-32 in the championship game of the state Class A tournament Saturday in Watertown.
The Lady Warriors defeated West Central in the first game on Thursday and then Friday night avenged an earlier loss to Webster. With the two victories the Lady Warriors punched their ticket to the state championship.
The Lady Warriors were able to keep pace with the Cavaliers for much of the first quarter but turnovers were costly for Winner.
Cox had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Warriors. Madyson Frazier added 6 points.
Winner had three players make the all-tournament team—Allison Cox, Sydney Fritz and Bailey Volmer.
In another thriller, the Winner High School boys basketball team punched their ticket to a return trip to the State A tournament with a 51-49 victory over Little Wound in the Region 7A championship. The game was last Tuesday in the ice arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.
Winner will make a back to back appearance at the state tournament which starts Thursday in Rapid City. The Warriors took third at state a year ago.
Devon Leiferman led the scoring for Winner with 18 points followed by Drew DeMers, 13; Krockett Krolikowski and Trevor Bertram, 6 each; Cameron Kuil, 5 and Lattrel Terkildsen with 2.
Leiferman pulled down 12 rebounds with Krokikowski, 9 and Kuil, 8.
Terkildsen had 3 assists.
DeMers had one man maker and Krolikowski had 2.
Twenty-six local youths qualified for the state youth wrestling tournament in Aberdeen on April 2-3. The regional was held Saturday in Mitchell.

The Winner Lady Warriors basketball team was not going to let an 11 point deficient stop them from reaching their goal of playing in the state tournament.
Winner won the Region 7A title with a 58-52 overtime victory over No. 1 seed Little Wound in Pine Ridge on March 1. Down 11 points at halftime, the Lady Warriors rallied back for the victory outscoring the Mustangs 12-6 in the overtime.
Cox led the scoring for Winner with 18 points followed by Fritz, 12; Volmer, 9 and Horstman, 8. Cox pulled down 9 of Winner’s 36 rebounds. Volmer pulled down 8 and Horstmam, 7.
The Lady Warriors take a 19-4 record into the state tournament which will be played in Watertown March 10, 11 and 12. The last time Winner played in the state tournament was in 2014 in Spearfish.
Colome boys basketball team secured a trip to the regional finals with a 57-48 victory over Gregory in the District 12B championship Friday in Mitchell.
This is Colome’s first district championship since 1978.
Reed Harter led the scoring for Colome with 26 points and Thieman added 17. The Cowboys were strong on the boards as they out-rebounded Gregory 33-19. Jackson Kinzer pulled down 12 rebounds and Kelly O’Bryan and Thieman added 6 each.
Colome played Corsica-Stickney on Tuesday, March 8, for the Region 6B title. The game was played in the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
Colome boys basketball team won the first round of the District 12B tournament as they defeated Marty 79-54 last Tuesday in Colome.
Reed Harter set the pace for the Cowboys with 35 points and Holden Thieman added 20 and Jackson Kinzer, 12. Colome out-rebounded Marty 43-30. Thieman pulled down 17 rebounds, Kinzer, 10 and Harter, 6.
Chase Kingsbury stood at the free throw line with 4 seconds left in the game. The Winner junior made both shots to give the Winner boys basketball team an exciting 74-71 victory over Red Cloud in the semifinals of the Region 7A tournament Thursday night.
The victory propelled the Winner Warriors into the Region 7A championship game which was played March 8 in Rapid City. The Warriors faced Little Wound in the championship.
The Warriors took the first lead of the game at 65-64 in the fourth quarter and then Red Cloud came back to retake the lead. The game was tied at 67-67 when coach Gardner called a time out.
The Warriors take a 17-5 record into the regional championship game.
Winner girls basketball team placed three girls on the Big Dakota Conference all-conference team. Making the team were Allison Cox, Bailey Volmer and Kylie Horstman. Honorable mention went to Sydney Fritz and Madyson Frazier. Winner Lady Warriors are the conference champions.
On the boys side, Devon Leiferman was named all-conference. Drew DeMers received honorable mention.
Winner boys were tri conference champions along with Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and Chamberlain.
Colome High School boys basketball team closed out the regular season with 63-30 win over Tripp-Delmont-Armour on Thursday.
Reed Harter scored 25 points and Holden Thieman added 19 points.
Thieman pulled down 9 rebounds, Harter pulled down 6 of Colome’s 26 rebounds, and Kelly O’Bryan added 5 boards.
