It was a battle of two undefeated teams and Winner came out on top in a big way. The No. 1 rated Winner Warriors cruised past the No. 5 rated Chamberlain Cubs 52-6 Friday night in Chamberlain.
“We dominated the line of scrimmage and our guys made plays offensively,” said coach Dan Aaker. “We really steamrolled in the first quarter,” added the coach.
The Warriors, who are 5-0 for the season, were up 44-0 after the first quarter.
Colome quarterback Reed Harter passed for four touchdowns and added two more on the ground, as the Cowboys defeated Avon 56-22 Friday night in Avon’s homecoming.
Colome is 5-0 and tied for 2nd place in the Class 9B poll. Friday Colome will host Andes Central/Dakota Christian.
Winner High School volleyball team placed fourth in a tournament in Elk Point on Saturday.
In the first round, Winner defeated Tea in 3 games. Tea took the first one 25-22 and then Winner won the next two 25-17, 25-18.
Winner was defeated by Dakota Valley in two games, 25-22 and 25-13.
In the third and fourth place match, Winner was defeated by Milbank in three. Winner took the first game 25-20 and then Winner lost the next two 23-25, 13-25.
Colome volleyball team was defeated by Jones County in the third place match of the Kimball tournament on Saturday. The scores were 23-25, 15-25.
In the first round, Colome defeated Sunshine Bible Academy 21-25, 25-17, 25-16.
In the semifinals, Burke/South Central defeated Colome 19-25, 23-25.
On Sept. 22, Avon defeated Colome 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 17-25 and 12-15.
Colome will host Winner on Oct. 1.
Tommie Joe Fox was born on January 11, 1933 in Winner, South Dakota to Thomas Fox and Kate (Scott) Fox. Tommie attended school in the Mission area until he dropped out in the 9th grade to help with the family ranches due to his father’s poor health.
Tommie married Dorothy Lee Dvorak on November 7, 1952. They lived and ranched on the ranch where he grew up north of Mission, South Dakota for many years. This ranch has been in the Fox family for almost 100 years. Tommie and Dorothy raised four children on the ranch and always seemed to have lots of family and friends visiting. Everyone gathered there as it was referred to as the “Home Place”.
Tommie loved the land, cattle and horses. He was a true cowboy in every sense of the word. He enjoyed ranch life and visiting with friends, neighbors, and family. He was witty and loved to talk, tell stories, and make people laugh. He also enjoyed attending rodeos and horse sales. In fact, in his younger years, Tommie Joe was quite the bronc rider and very proud of winning First Place among 40 contestants at a rodeo in the area. He cherished the belt buckle he won that day.
In the 1990’s his wife Dorothy’s declining health made it necessary to move to Winner to be close to doctors. Tommie did not like town life and traveled to the ranch almost daily. Eventually Dorothy was moved to the Winner Nursing Home and Tommie to the Elder Inn Assisted Living. Tommie was a faithful husband and visited Dorothy in the nursing home every morning and evening as long as he was able to do so.
In 2011 Tommie and Dorothy entered a nursing home in Lakewood, Colorado to be close to their daughter, Cindy, and her family. When Dorothy passed away in 2012 Tommie moved to a small Assisted Living facility with a home like environment where he resided until he passed away peacefully on September 24th after a long bout with Alzheimer’s disease.
Leuella was born December 4, 1927 in Bryant, South Dakota to Louis and Mabel Gilbertson. Leuella graduated from Hayti High School. She was united in marriage to Curtis Lee on September 7, 1947. The couple made their home near Lake Norden. While raising a family, Leuella attended SDSU and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in January of 1969. During the summer of 1969 she accepted the position as Extension Agent for Tripp County and they moved to Winner.
As the Extension Agent she taught many classes of beginning sewing and bread baking. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and assisting 4-H members and their 4-H clubs over the years. Leuella retired after 20 years of service.
After retirement Leuella enjoyed spending time on the farm with Curtis. She raised very large gardens and enjoyed giving away her harvest to friends and family. Another passion that she mastered was quilting. Leuella made beautiful quilts for family and friends. She was a charter member of the South Canyon Lutheran Church Piecemakers in Rapid City. Leuella is quoted as saying, “nothing gets in my way to keep me from being there on Thursday mornings.”
Leuella will always be remembered for her love of family and friends. She was well known for the beautiful flowers she grew, her peach pies and homemade buns. Faith was always an integral part of her life. Leuella attend Circle and Prayer Breakfast as a member of South Canyon Lutheran Church. Her values of kindness, respect of others, hard work, and strong faith were passed onto her children and grandchildren.
Eight Winner High School students have been selected for all-state chorus. The students chosen are: Hayley Halverson, Dacey Kocer, Molly Connot, Calah Covey, Duncan English, Grant Winter, Nick Blare and John Kludt. Chosen as alternate are: Mary Calhoon, Ronae Klein, Izak Moleterno and Elijah Blare.
Duncan English and Molly Connot will be honored as four year members of all-state chorus.
The concert will be held Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at the civic center in Rapid City. The concert will be televised live on SDPB-TV.

Carter Davis of Plankinton found Labor Day a perfect time to visit with veterans in Winner. The 10 year old had a table set up in the former Depot at the Tripp County Historical Society museum as he took pictures with the veterans and asked them questions about their service. He then posts the pictures and stories on Facebook. Carter’s Thank Your Veterans Project is a way to thank these individuals for serving their country.
Davis is the son of Cordell and Melissa Davis of Plankinton and the grandson of Winner residents Steve and Joan Davis. Carter’s maternal grand parents are John and Sherry Staller of Plankinton.
So far, Carter’s Thank Our Veterans Project has photo after photo of him and the veterans he has met. Carter says he has interviewed over 60 veterans and planned to talk to at least five in Winner. It is a project this young school student started a year ago. Shane Gardner, Sioux Falls, formerly of Winner, told Carter of the time he spent in the Army. Carter says some of the stories are funny, some of them have a lot of interest. “They’re just all kids of cool stuff,” he said. “When veterans start talking they have a story to tell,” said Carter. Carter says it does not take long to introduce himself to veterans. This 10-year-old boy is making new friends and keeping the memories of veterans alive.
Howland Custom Application Inc. will be holding a grand opening and customer appreciation week Sept. 28-Oct. 2. The business, owned by Dennis and Donna Howland, has moved into its new building at 31712 Harvest Road.
There will be coffee and cookies each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a customer appreciation lunch on Friday, Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The business features a new fertilizer facility which consists of four bins which hold 700 tons of dry fertilizer and a state of the art blending facility to mix fertilizer. There will be daily tours of the new fertilizer facility. Howlands have hired Tommy Vaughn, an agronomist, who will be doing soil sampling and crop scouting. Howland Custom Application has been in business for 13 years. In 2011, they moved into their first building which is just west of the new structure.
