Historical society plans events for Sept. 2

The Tripp County Historical Society has a lot of events planned  at  the museum on Sept. 2 which is the Saturday before Labor Day.

The museum will be open at 9 a.m. and will be serving Jim Hiemstra’s famous carmel rolls until noon.

At noon the museum will start serving pie and homemade ice cream until the close of the car show (usually around 3 p.m.) There will be a free will offering for the pie and ice cream.

There will be the Prairie Cruisers car show at the museum.

Starting at 9 a.m. till the closing of the car show all vendors are welcome to set up in the Jubilee Park at the museum.

Troop 100 Boy Scouts will be celebrating its 100th anniversary at the museum. The Boy Scout program will start at 1 p.m. on Sept. 2.

The historical society wants everyone to enjoy their Labor Day weekend.


Sprenkle named Labor Day parade marshal

Jeanette Sprenkle will serve as the parade marshal for the 2023 Winner Labor Day parade.

The parade will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 4.

Sprenkle was born May 1, 1933, the oldest daughter of Lorenzo (Ren) and Nettie Wilcox at the Winner General Hospital.

Her early life was spent seven miles northeast of Winner.

In the fall of 1939, she started rural school at Thunder Creek School which continued through the 5th grade. The fall of 1944 she started her 6th grade in Winner Public School graduating from Winner High School in 1951. After graduating, she enrolled in business school in Omaha, Neb. Later returning to Winner working as a secretary for her father at Farmer Supply Co.

On June 15, 1962, she was married to James Sprenkle, the love of her life.

They were parents of two sons, Randy and Ron.

The winter of 1962 she started working for John J. McKillop,  public accountant who had purchased the business from the Waller’s.

The fall of 1965 she was contacted by Farmers State Bank that there was an opening. She was hired and worked there for 27 years. The bank was sold to Norwest of Minneapolis and she continued working for them for one year.

In March of 1995 she was told by Jim’s doctor of Sioux Falls that his health was deteriorating and that he was going to need extra help. She had already realized that so in May of 1995 she retired.

Jim was suffering with a disease of the arteries and was very susceptible to bone infection.

He suffered a parayzing stroke and was put on dialysis.

Jeanette kept Jim at home caring for him with the help of home health.

On June 15, 2002, they celebrated their 50th  wedding anniversary.

On June 26, he was admitted to the Winner hospital and then transferred to Sioux Falls on June 28. On June 30 Jeanette lost the love of her life.

She is a past member of the Mildred Rebekah Lodge, Federated Womens Club, Winner Ladies Methodist Society and was a treasurer of the Winner Methodist Church for eight years.

A present member of the American Legion auxiliary, VFW auxiliary, Tripp County museum and Winner Methodist Church.

“I have been blessed to have been born in the Midwest and this loving community of Winner. I am proud and honored to have been chosen as the parade marshal. My thanks go out to the Winner American Legion and the VFW and all the people of Winner,” she said.

The parade theme is “Bold stripes. Bright Stars. Brave Hearts.”

The parade route will be different this year due to the Highway 18 construction. The parade will start at the fire station on North Main St. then go east on the four lanes and will end at Winner Super Foods on 7th St.

Following the parade will be the big free community BBQ at the American Legion on 3rd St. This is sponsored by Winner area businesses and Winner American Legion. The BBQ starts at 11 a.m.

Following the BBQ will be the ranch rodeo held at the Tripp County rodeo grounds. The Calcutta is at 1 p.m and the rodeo at 1:30 p.m.

Labor Day events

Labor Day weekend is such a fun time in Winner and there is so much going on. Mac’s Carnival will be on Main Street four days from Friday through Monday. There are advance carnival tickets on sale until Aug. 31 at various locations.

Friday will feature the Winner Area Chamber of Commerce ranch bronc ride. The Calcutta will be at 7 p.m. and the ride at 7:30 p.m. Hollenbeck Rodeo Co. of Winner will provide the stock.

Saturday is full of events. The big Prairie Cruisers Car show will be held at the Tripp County Historical Society museum, east of Winner.

Registration for the car show will start at 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. The show will start at 1 p.m. with awards at 3 p.m.

There will be a free noon meal.

In addition to the car show, the historical society has a lot going on at the museum on Saturday. Jim Hiemstra’s famous caramel rolls will be served from 9 a.m.  to noon at the museum. From noon till the end of the car show the historical society will be serving pie and homemade ice cream. There will be a free will offering.

Also, there will be a vendor show at the Jubilee Park on the museum grounds. All vendors are welcome to set up their wares.

On Saturday at the museum will be the 100th  anniversary celebration of Winner Boy Scout Troop 100. This celebration will start at 1 p.m.

The Best, Mathis, Whetham golf tournament will be at the Winner Country Club at 1 p.m on Saturday.

Sunday will feature a Guardian Flight meet and greet at the Winner airport hangar from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The popular demolition derby will be Sunday at 1 p.m. east of the Tripp County Fairgrounds.

There will be a Calcutta at 1 p.m. followed by derby. There will be a concession stand. The gates open at 10 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the top winners.

Monday will start early with the Winner Regional Health 5Krun and walk. Registration starts at 7:15 a.m. at the south parking lot. The race will start at 8 a.m.

Following the road race persons can cruise right into the parade.

The Labor Day weekend will also feature men’s slow pitch softball tournament at the softball fields.

There will be a volleyball tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m.

There will be mud races Saturday.

The Black Lab will have music all for days.

DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING

A joint screening for families with children ages birth to five within the Colome School District will be held on Sept. 7.

The screening will take place at the Colome School at 1 p.m.  This screening is to make you aware of the developmental milestones your child has mastered. 

A team consisting of personnel from Core Educational Cooperative and the Colome School will screen each child in the areas of vision, hearing, language, motor, and developmental skills.

Results for each child screened will be available the day of the screening.

Blood drive set

The Winner community blood drive will be held Sept. 19-20 at the Winner city office.

This blood drive is sponsored by Community Connections.

The blood drive on Sept. 19 will be from 12:15 to 5:50 p.m. The blood drive on Sept. 20 will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LifeServe is the organization that collects the blood.

Big Heat Wave

All signs are positive for a big heat wave in Tripp County. The county and Winner are in a heat advisory that extends until 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Temperatures were to be well over 100 degrees and that combined with high humidity made for dangerous conditions.

The heat index or “feel like” temperature was very important to follow this week. On most days the temperature will be over 100.

Sunday was nice to have break from the heat.

Heat related illness is possible for person in strenuous outdoor activities or with no air conditioning.

Persons should drink plenty of water, work early or late in the day and wear light clothing.

Cowboy Fair is Saturday

There are lots of activities planned for the Colome Cowboy

Fair to be held Saturday, Aug. 26.

It will start off with a fun run and walk. The race will begin and end at the Vets Hall. Registration opens at 7 a.m. and the race is at 8 a.m. There will be a one mile walk and a 2 mile run. Funds raised will benefit the Colome Vets Hall to make necessary repairs and updates.

Refreshments will be provided by First Fidelity Bank of Colome.

Registrations forms are available at First Fidelity Bank and the Colome city office. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required.

There will be a farmers market in the Colome park from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be lots of vendors offering a variety of items.

City wide garage sales are planned for the day.

The MoJo coffee truck will be in Colome so persons can grab a coffee, latte or cold drink.

There will be a vets hall open house starting at 9 a.m. which will feature a display of city and school history. There will be a bouncey house outside the vets hall.

The vets hall committee will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a free will donation at the hall. All proceeds go toward the improvements inside and the roof repair.

The Colome Volunteer Fire Department will have water games and youth fire training activities.

Starting at 10 a.m. there will be fast draw shooting.

Kathy Hrabanek will have Cowboy games starting at 1 p.m.

There will be a cruise night starting at 5 p.m. Come bring your car or truck and show it off.

The Frontier Bar will have a dunk tank and mechanical bull.

A mountain oyster feed will start at 6 p.m. at the Frontier Bar.

A street dance will start at 8 p.m.

So plan to spend Saturday in Colome and take in all the events.

(Margaret) Jayne Knutson, 82

(Margaret) Jayne Knutson, 82, of Red Wing and formerly of Aberdeen, South Dakota, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

 She was born March 8, 1941, in Clearfield, South Dakota to Fred and Fern (Curtis) Vogt.  She grew up on the family farm in Clearfield and attended school in the area.  She helped on the farm as a young woman and then worked in Winner, South Dakota, where she met her husband, Ed Knutson.  They were married in 1962 and lived in Winner for a time before moving to Huron and later Aberdeen and Mina Lake.  After her children were older, Jayne went back to school for her nursing degree, receiving her bachelor’s from Presentation College in Aberdeen.  She worked as an RN for a few years during which she started a home health care business with some friends.  She later returned to nursing and worked at a same day surgery center until her retirement.  Throughout their marriage, she and Ed enjoyed traveling both internationally and throughout the US, having visited all the state capitals.  They had a group of friends they enjoyed camping with as well as with family. 

In retirement, they spent several winters in Texas near Corpus Christi.  Jayne excelled at all forms of sewing, using her talents early on as a talented seamstress.  She later became accomplished in cross-stitch, Hardanger and quilting. 

Ed passed away in 2020 and Jayne moved to Minnesota where she would be closer to her children. 

She is survived by her 2 children, Sherri Knutson of Red Wing and David (DeNae) Knutson of Farmington; 3 grandchildren Chelsea (Jesse) Gebel, Tyler (Baylee) Knutson and Carter (Maddy) Knutson and one great-grandson, Henry. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ed.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2023 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the service.  Memorials are preferred to Aberdeen Area Humane Society (https://anewleashonlife.net/). William “Bill” Schroeder, 64

William “Bill” Schroeder, 64, of Witten, South Dakota passed away on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023 at the Winner Regional Hospital in Winner, SD.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023 at 10 a.m.  at The Red Hills, formerly known as the Carter Mall, in Carter, SD.

William Bradley Schroeder was born Sept. 21, 1958 to Herman and Phyllis (Smith) Schroeder. He was the 5th child of Herman and Phyllis. Bill was baptized on Sept. 22, 1963 in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner, SD. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kahler were Bill’s sponsors.

Bill grew up in the country and attended grade school until the 8th grade before coming to Winner High School. After high school Bill joined the Army and was stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas. He completed his basic training before he was injured in an accident and he was given an honorable medical discharge.

Over the years Bill worked various local jobs. He married Connie Labbs Jan. 13, 1995 at the Carter Mall in Carter, SD. Connie and Bill lived in Carter and later moved to their permanent residence home in Witten, SD. Bill loved the Witten community and people in it. Later in life as Connie’s M.S. progressed, she moved to Winner where she made a home at the Winner Long Term Care Center due to her health.

Bill was a very frequent visitor of the Winner Nursing Home. He visited his wife Connie daily, showing his love for her and keeping her up to speed with what was going in their lives and community. Bill also cared for the other residents, and also the staff of the Winner Nursing Home, helping out wherever he could and participated in many activities.

Bill is survived by his wife, Connie, siblings; Herman Jr. (Diane) of Winner, SD; Mylan Schroeder of Alcester, SD; Lori (Rudy) Kahler of Winner, SD; Kathy (Dan) Vavra of Gregory, SD; Cindy Schroeder of Winner, SD; Sally Schroeder of Gregory, SD; Orville (Melinda) of Winner, SD. Robert (Jean) Schroeder of White Lake, SD. Marlin Smith and his family of Holyoke, Colorado. Sister-in-law Patsy Smith and family of New York. Bill is also survived by his step children Ray Allen (Linda) Bahm of O’Neill, NE and children Christina Bahm and children: Ava, Cruzito, Genevieve and Reynaldo (Brandee Felix) Bahm and their 4 children: Sinella, Vincent, Elvira, Lacinna; Todd (Lisa) Bahm of St. Paul, MN and Orion; Dan Labb and family. Bill is also survived by many uncles, aunts, cousins and in-laws.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents, brother Jerry, nephew Benjamin, mother-in-law Clarice Dreyer and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
