This year there were 726 flags flying in the Winner Cemetery as part of the Avenue of Flags.

On Monday over 150 plus persons showed up at the cemetery to put up the flags. It did not take long for the workers to put up the flags.

“I am so thankful for the people who showed up to put up the flags,” said Bob Benson of the Avenue of Flags organization.  “I am so proud to be from this community,” he added.

There are over 900 persons eligible to have a flag flown as part of the Avenue of Flags.

A tradition that was started years ago by the Episcopal Church Women is now carried on by the Alpha Phi Chapter of ESA.

ESA offers affordable, repurposed flower arrangements for Memorial Day cemetery decorating.

When the church ladies decided they did not want to tackle the process any longer, they approached Alpha Phi chapter to see if they wanted to take over. So the ESA chapter has been carrying on the tradition for over 14 years.

Severe Sunday Storms

Severe storms that crossed South Dakota on Sunday led to reports of some tornadoes.

The National Weather Service says a tornado in Tripp County Sunday evening caused the loss of farm building and power lines down.  Rick Petersek, who lives east of Colome, lost a barn and the storm flipped over a semi.

The power was off in Colome for about three to four hours and the strong winds ripped power poles.

Rosebud Electric Cooperative of Gregory reported they lost five transmission poles north of the Colome Substation. This same lines feeds power to the Hamill area and residents in this area of Tripp County were also without power. The power went off around 8 p.m. and the power was restored around midnight.

REC says in their whole system they lost between 15 to 20 poles that were hit by lighting or blown down by the wind.

South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs spoke to the Winner High School government class on May 12.

She told the class when she was 18 years old she served as a page in the legislature. “That spurred my interest in politics. Since that time I have been actively involved behind the scene in many campaigns,” she said.

Krebs served in the legislature for 10 years prior to running for secretary of state. “I ran for secretary of state because I did not agree what was going on in office. I wanted to make a change,” she explained.

Krebs told the students it is important for them to vote and that every vote does matter. She encouraged the seniors to download the mobile app Vote 605. Here persons can view a sample ballot, find a polling place, view legislative districts, access county auditors and gather absentee ballot information.
