Colome Races to 64-14 Victory

No. 2 ranked Colome scored 64 unanswered points Friday night as they rolled to a 64-14 victory over Alcester-Hudson.

The game ended in the third quarter due to the mercy rule.

The Cowboys were down early but quickly took control of the game.

The Cowboys are undefeated with a 5-0 record.

Kolton Salonen opened the scoring for Colome on a 17 yard pass from Layton Thieman.

The Cowboys put up a lot of points in the second quarter. Scoring for Colome were Jackson Kinzer on a 9 yard run, Wyatt Cahoy on a 4 yard run, Kinzer intercepted a pass from a 36 yard touchdown, Cahoy on a 3 yard run and Chase Dufek on a 40 yard run.

In the third quarter, Thieman scored on a 4 yard run and Linkyn Petersek on a 53 yard run.

The Cowboys finished the game with 448 total yards.

Kinzer had 170 yards, Dufek, 118 and Cahoy 19.
The defense was led by Dufek and Thieman with

9 tackles and each had an interception, Beau Bertram and Salonen with 6 each.

“We faced some adversity but we responded well as team,” said coach Ben Connot. “We had some people step up and play some important roles. I am pleased how we came back,” said Connot.

This Friday Colome will host Scotland in a homecoming game at 7 p.m.

Lady Warriors Place 4th in Tournament

Winner Lady Warriors volleyball team placed fourth at the Eastern Classic at Tri Valley on Saturday.

Winner defeated Tri Valley in 3 sets 31-29, 24-26 and 25-8.

Alexis Richey and Morgan Hammerbeck were 100 percent in serving. Richey had 3 ace serves and Hammerbeck, 2.
Hammerbeck had 14 kills and Abby Marts, 13.  Addy Root had 22 set assists.  Richey and Hammerbeck were both 61 percent in serve receive.  Richey had 20 digs and Hammerbeck and Abby Marts both had 18 kills.  JaiWanda Roubideaux had 2 solo blocks and Sam Marts had 1 solo block and 2 bloc assists.

As a team, Winner was 98 percent in serving with 6 aces, 34 kills, 25 assists. The team was 52 percent in serve receive with 76 digs and 4 blocks.

Winner got beat by Tea in 3 sets.

Abby Marts was 100 percent in serving.  Richey and Hammerbeck had 3 ace serves.  Abby Marts had 11 kills and Hammerbeck, 8.
Addy Root had 23 set assists.  Richey was 80 percent in serve receive and had 16 digs. Hammerbeck had 12 digs.  Sam Marts had 4 solo blocks and 3 block assists.  Roubideaux had 2 block assists and Hammerbeck, 2 block assists.

The Lady Warriors were 87 percent in serving with 12 aces, 24 kills, 54 percent in serve receive, 54 digs and 9 blocks.

Winner got beat by Elk Point Jefferson in the third and fourth place match.  Winner lost in 3 sets 25-15, 18-25, 15-25.

Hammerbeck and Abby Marts were 100 percent in serving. Hammerbeck along with both Sam and Abby Marts each had 1 ace serve.   Abby Marts had 11 kills and Hammerbeck, 8.  Root had 15 set assists.   Abby Marts was 90 percent in serve receive and Richey was 75 percent.  Hammerbeck and Richey each had 17 digs.  Abby Marts had 3 solo blocks and Sam Marts, 1.

As a team, Winner was 97 percent in serving with 3 ace serves, 23 kills, 19 set assists, 63 percent in serve receive with 63 digs and 4 blocks.

“We played very inconsistent and had a lot of ups and downs during the day,” said coach Jaime Keiser. “We would play very good one minute and then everything would fall apart the next time. We had a lot of serve receive, serving and attack errors which gave our opponents too many unearned points,” said Keiser.

The next action for Winner will be Oct. 3 at home against Gregory.

Lady Warriors Defeat Mobridge-Pollock

Winner Lady Warriors volleyball team defeated Mobridge-Pollock in 3 sets on Sept. 18 in Winner. The scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-13.

Sam Marts and Gracie Littau were 100 percent in serving. Alexis Richey and Morgan Hammerbeck each had 4 ace serves.

Abby Marts had 15 kills and Hammerbeck, 11.  Littau had 27 set assists.

Hammerbeck was 80 percent in serve receive and Richey was 63 percent.

Richey and Abby Marts both had 11 digs.

Abby Marts had 2 solo blocks and 1 block assist.

Hammerbeck had 1 solo block and 1 block assist.

The Lady Warriors were 95 percent in serving with 13 ace serves, 32 kills, 29 assists, 56 percent in serve receive with 46 digs and 9 blocks.

Coach Jaime Keiser said Mobridge-Pollock is a scrappy team. “We came out ready to play and played very well the first set. We dug ourselves a hole by giving them too many unearned points in set 2,” said the coach. “We did a great job of attacking and digging, but struggled in serve receive. I was proud that we played together as a team and pulled it out in set 2.”

The next action for Winner will be Oct. 3 hosting Gregory and hosting White River on Oct. 5.

Colome girls volleyball team took sixth place at the Kimball tournament on Saturday.

Canistota defeated Colome 25-19, 25-18

Kaydee Heath had 2 kills, 5 digs and 1 ace.  Rayne Hermsen had 1 kill and 4 digs, Makayla Shippy had 1 kill, 2 assists, 1 ace and 1 block; Abby Kortan had 2 kills, 3 assists, one dig and 1 ace; Haley Krumpus had 1 kill and 2 digs; Alexa McKenzie had 8 digs; Maggie McCarty, 2 digs and Jaclyn Laprath, 1 digs.

Colome lost to Kimball/White Lake 19-25, 14-25.

Hermsen had 3 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces; Shippy, 5 assists, 1 dig; Kortan, 2 kills, 2 assists, 2 digs; Krumpus, 1 dig, Saydee Heath, 2 kills, 2 blocks and 1 dig.  McKenzie had 4 digs, McCarty and Baylie Hoffine, 1 each and Laprath 5 digs.

In the fifth place match, Colome lost to Jones County 16-25, 19-25.

Earlier in the week, Colome hosted Avon. The Cowgirls were defeated by Avon in 3 sets—18-25, 19-25, 17-25.  Hermsen had 5 points and 2 aces and McCarthy scored 5 points.  Krumpus and Kaydee Heath both had 4 kills.  Shippy had 6 digs and Kortan, 5.
Shippy had 6 assists.

Colome lost the junior varsity match 13-25, 14-25.

Cross Country Team Has Busy Week

The Winner Area cross country team was busy this week as they competed in the Rapid City Invitational on Friday and Platte-Geddes on Saturday.

At the Rapid City meet, in the girls varsity Sidda Schuyler placed 12th , Jaclyn Laprath, 55th, Aryn Meiners, 78th, Saige Schuyler, 87th, Meagan Blare, 88th, Melanie Brozik, 92nd.

In the varsity boys race, Kade Watson placed 35th, Dawson Phillips, 103rd and Wyatt Turnquist, 136th.

The girls team placed 12th.

The cross country team traveled to Platte on Saturday. In the girls varsity, Madison Thieman was 27th, Charlotte Shopene, 29th, Katherine Jankauskas, 30th, Gabriel Kocer, 33fd, Nanette Eagle Star, 39th.

In the varsity boys race, Atlas Willuweit, 42nd.

In the junior high girls race, CiCi Watson placed 8th. 
On Oct. 2, the cross country team will travel to Gregory for the SESD Conference meet.

Marilyn R. Jones, 79

Marilyn R. Jones, 79, of Rapid City, passed away on Tuesday Sept. 19, 2017 with her husband, Douglas, by her side at the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 27, 1938 on the family farm near Ocheyedan, Iowa to Merwin and Gladys (Morfitt) Dillehay. She grew up in Ocheyedan and graduated from Harris High School in 1956. She attended Morningside College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 1958.

Marilyn married Douglas Jones in Harris, Iowa on June 15, 1958, and from this union two sons were born, Daniel and Steven. Being a Military family, they lived in several different cities throughout the Unites States before moving to Winner, SD in 1976 where Marilyn opened “Marilyn’s Interiors”. She relocated the store to Spearfish, SD when they moved there in 1992. As an accomplished seamstress, Marilyn was talented in her ability to create beautiful custom window coverings, bed spreads, and other accessories. She also reupholstered many pieces of furniture throughout her career. Her hobbies included spending time with family and friends, laughing and having a good time no matter what she did. She also enjoyed watching the ducks at Canyon Lake Park, singing, watching classical and western movies, she especially loved musicals.

After Marilyn was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005, she sold Marilyn’s Interiors and they moved to Sibley Iowa in 2006 before returning to Rapid City, SD in 2015 to be closer to family.

Since Marilyn didn’t have any daughters of her own, she thoroughly loved to spoil and entertain her granddaughters by having sleepovers, watching her favorite movies and musicals with them, taking them on horseback riding adventures, making them beautiful dresses as they were growing up and she never missed the opportunity to go to their sporting events even traveling to Florida to watch them play fast pitch softball while they were in college.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Douglas, Rapid City, SD two sons, Steven (Darla) Jones, Rapid City, SD and Daniel (Brenda) Jones, Norfolk, NE, five grandchildren; Nicole (Lee) Huber, Danielle (Shaun) Sullivan, Michelle (Mike) Worden, Sam & Katie Jones, four great grandchildren; Carter, Cole and KyLee Huber & Graysen Worden, a sister Marjorie Miquelon, and several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers; Donald, Dale, Raymond and a great grandson, Brayden Worden.
Visitation with family present was held on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017 at 10 a.m. at South Canyon Baptist Church 3333 W. Chicago St, Rapid City, SD 57702. Funeral services followed at 11 a.m. at South Canyon Baptist Church with interment at Black Hills National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers if you wish, a memorial has been established to the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Redfield, SD as they took excellent care of Marilyn during the last 6 months of her life. A.L. (Arthur Lee) Albert, 92

Lee was born in Sioux City, IA on Feb. 6, 1925. His parents were Arthur B. Albert and Marie (Nelsen) Albert of Nisland, SD. After high school graduation from Nisland, he entered the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Lee met Quindrid Frahm in Nisland. They were married, as Lee quoted, “on a rainy Saturday” in Broadus, MT. They remained married for 69 years until Quindrid passed away in 2012.

Lee received his B.A. in Education from BHSU in 1948. Later on he received his MA and Specialist Degree. He began his career as a teacher at Buffalo, SD. He later accepted a position as Principal of Gregory High School, Gregory, SD. In 1950 he moved to Humboldt, South Dakota as Superintendent of Schools. In 1955 he accepted a similar position in Winner, South Dakota. In 1966 he moved to Newcastle, WY as Superintendent of Weston County Schools , where he retired in 1986.

Lee was active in many organizations including American Legion in Humboldt, SD. In Winner and Newcastle, he was a member of the Lions Club and the city Country Club. He was an active member in the Lutheran church, both in Winner and Newcastle. His church community was very important to him and he continued to donate to it after he was unable to attend in person. Lee and Quindrid established a scholarship at Black Hills State University where they both graduated. In addition, Lee is a member of BHSU Hall of Fame as a member of the 1946-47 championship basketball team. He was also awarded BHSU Administrator of the Year in 1978.

Lee enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and sitting on the deck of his cabin “up on the prairie” near Buckhorn. It was family constructed and a true sense of pride for him. He looked forward to the family enjoying “the land”, especially over the summer holidays. During retirement, Lee and Quindrid enjoyed more than 20 years traveling in the south during the winter months. They finally settled in Val Vista Winter Village in Casa Grande, AZ. They made many lasting friends wherever they lived.

Lee is preceded in death by his wife, Quindrid Frerk Frahm Albert and his parents. He is survived by his children, Alvin L. Albert (Elaine) of Newcastle, WY, Betty M. Day (Richard) of Newcastle, WY, William J. Albert (Cindy) of Green Valley, AZ, Robert E. Albert (Linda) of Newcastle, WY, Quindrid J. Godden (Jim Cleary) of Green Valley, AZ, 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

State Minimum Wage to Increase Jan. 1

MINIMUM WAGE

The state minimum wage will increase from $8.65/hour to $8.85/hour effective Jan. 1, 2018.

The minimum wage is annually adjusted by any increase in the cost of living, as measured in the Consumer Price Index published by the U.S. Department of Labor. This year’s increase was 1.9 percent and is rounded up to the nearest five cents.

The hourly minimum wage for tipped employees will be $4.425/hour effective Jan. 1, 2018, half the minimum wage for non-tipped employees. Wages and tips combined must equal at least the minimum wage.

Shannon Duffy is the Newly Elected President

Shannon Duffy is the newly elected president of the National Rural Letter Carriers Junior Auxiliary at this years convention held in National Harbor, Maryland. Her father, Brad Duffy, is a member of the South Dakota Rural Letter Carrier organization and one of its past presidents.

The National Rural Letter Carriers organization is comprised of three areas: Association, Auxiliary and Junior Auxiliary. The Junior Auxiliary is made up of children and grandchildren of rural carriers between the ages of 6 and 20. When the child/grandchild reaches the age of 14, he/she is able to run for a spot on the board, vote on new members of the board and policy changes. As president, Shannon will be responsible for the planning of activities for next year’s convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In addition, she will appoint people to several offices at the national level and run the business meetings. Other board members include: 1st Vice President Cassandra Lynn of Missouri, 2nd Vice President Ruby Halcomb of Colorado, Secretary Josh Hackett of New York and Treasurer Chavannah Chesnut of Indiana.
