A veterans wall of honor will be dedicated at the Winner Cemetery on Memorial Day, May 29. The dedication will follow the Memorial Day service which starts at 11 a.m.
On the wall are a list of 104 names of persons from Tripp County who have died while wearing the uniform. The honor list includes names of persons from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The names are soldiers who were killed in action, missing in action, died of wounds and non-battle death.
The Avenue of Flags commissioned the creation of the wall. Bob Benson, president of the Avenue of Flags, said Ruth Novotny made the wall out of a material similar to highway signs so it will last forever. A lot of research went into compiling the names. Benson explained he had a list of names from the American Legion and also went to Pierre to do some research. “It was a long process trying to get everything right and making sure we did not miss any one,” said Benson.
There is still room on the wall for additional names.
At the dedication, the Avenue of Flags will recognize Ruth Novotny, Rosebud Concrete, Marilyn Grossenburg, Grossenburg Implement. Benson said Gene Grossenburg was the main man who made this wall happen. “He would bring equipment and employees to work on the project,” said Benson. The Avenue of Flags is a community based organization. Persons who would like to donate to the Avenue of Flags can contact Benson or Byron Foreman.
