It was a dream day for the Winner High School boys track team as they won first place in two events at the 92nd running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls.

Plus it was a special day for senior Cameron Kuil who placed third in the special 200 and won a Howard Wood gold medal scholarship.

In the 4×200 the Warriors used a big push from Kuil at the wire to win the Class A meet title. The Warriors won the race in 1:31.52. Runners were Riley Calhoon, Brady Fritz, Drew DeMers and Cameron Kuil.

Less than three hours later Winner did it again winning the Class A 4×100 relay in a time of :44.27.4. Runners were Riley Calhoon, Isaac Naasz, Drew DeMers and Kuil.

Kuil ran the anchor leg moving the Warriors from fourth place went he took the baton to first at the finish line.
Kuil was asked what was going through his mind when he got the baton. “I knew I had to give it my all. We talk about my closing speed and I try to use that to my advantage.”

Naasz said it feels good to get the trophy because Winner has not had a first place victory in a long time at Howard Wood. “It feels pretty good to bring something back to Winner especially in track because that doesn’t happy very often.”

DeMers said he got out to a good start. “I knew I had a lot of pressure on myself because I did not want to let Cameron down.” Kuil took it from there and made up the time to give the Warriors a victory.

Calhoon said the four some wanted to make sure we have good handoffs and practiced hard so the time was just right.

Coach Larry Aaker said “We knew going in we had a pretty good shot of doing well in the boys 4×100 and 4×200. The boys are extremely competitive, they want to compete for each other and they were very focused on getting the job done.

“We knew that if we could put Cameron in a good position that our chances of winning were a little higher than everyone else’s just because of Cameron’s speed and his ability to finish races. Credit the first three legs in both races for running extremely well and getting the baton around,” said Aaker.

Kuil’s weekend of running started on Friday night. He was one of eight athletes chosen to run in the special 200 meter dash. He joins a list of other Winner athletes, both male and female, who have had their day in the spotlight at the special Howard Wood events.

Kuil took third in the 200 in :22.17 just behind Bismarck, ND. Legacy’s Alex Brosseau in :22.08.

Kuil admitted he was balancing both nerves and excitement as he climbed into the starting blocks in lane five. He said he spent a lot of time focusing on his start.

“The special 200 was a great race for Cameron,” said Larry Aaker. “He represented himself, the school and the Winner track team very well. As a coach it’s great to see a kid rewarded and I know Cameron had a lot of fun and it is something that he will remember the rest of his life.”

Aaker said the Winner girls had a great weekend on the track. “I am really proud of how well they ran and competed. Their success was kind of overshadowed by the boys two victories but these girls keep getting better each and every meet. Four of the five relays ran their fastest time of the year.”

Sidda Schuyler also ran her fastest time of the season in the mile.

The girls 4×100 relay ran a time of 54.45. Runners were Alexis Richey, Morgan Hammerbeck, Madison Thieman and Ellie Brozik.

Data Shows State’s 2016 Infant Mortality Rate Lowest Ever

INFANT

In 2016 South Dakota reported its lowest rate ever of infant deaths, according to new data released today by the Department of Health. The data shows there were 12,270 births in 2016 and 59 infant deaths for a rate of 4.8 deaths per 1,000 live births. That’s down from 7.3 in 2015 and below the previous low of 5.5 in 2000.

“It’s wonderful news that more babies are celebrating their first birthdays,” said First Lady Linda Daugaard, who chaired the 2011 Governor’s Task Force on Infant Mortality. “If we continue to promote safe sleep guidelines for infants, help pregnant women stop smoking and get early prenatal care, we can support that encouraging trend.”

Promoting safe sleep guidelines, increasing early prenatal care and decreasing smoking by pregnant women were key recommendations of the task force. South Dakota data shows babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday if their mothers smoke during pregnancy. The new data shows 13.6 percent of pregnant women smoked during pregnancy, down from 14 percent in 2015. The data also showed 72.7 percent of pregnant women in South Dakota got prenatal care in the first trimester.

The First Lady noted the state’s Cribs for Kids program has distributed 7,915 safe sleep kits since its launch in 2012 to provide families in need with safe sleep options for their babies. The kits include a Pack ‘N Play crib, sheet, infant sleep sack, pacifier and educational materials.

“The decrease in the number of infant deaths is encouraging and certainly reflects the hard work of many health care providers across the state,” said Colleen Winter, director of family and community health for the department. “We need to continue those efforts, particularly among our American Indian population where the infant mortality rate is still disproportionately high.”

South Dakota Gas Prices Stabilize

GAS

South Dakota’s gas price average has stabilized at $2.36 per gallon which is the same as last week and one month ago. Although we’re 18 cents over last year, the highest 2017 gas price average in the state has been $2.40 on April 13.

Today’s national average price for regular unleaded gasoline is $2.35 per gallon, which is four cents less than one week and one month ago, and 14 cents more than the same date last year. “AAA says the trending decline is due to an unseasonable glut of gasoline in the U.S. market, record high refinery production rates, moderate demand and a recent drop in crude oil prices,” said Marilyn Buskohl, spokeswoman for AAA South Dakota.

Last week according to GasPrices.AAA.com, 46 states saw prices drop – some by at least 9 cents – with prices remaining steady in other parts of the country.
Current Price Averages per Gallon of Regular Gasoline

Sioux Falls – $2.24, down 3 cents from one month ago … up 18 cents since 5/8/16
Rapid City – $2.42, up 3 cents from one month ago … up 23 cents since 5/8/16
South Dakota – $2.36, same as one month ago … up 18 cents since 5/8/16
U.S. – $2.35, down 4 cents from one month ago … up 14 cents since 5/8/16

BankWest Employees Receive Medical Training

2017 AEDand CPR training

It’s hard to know when medical training will be needed, but BankWest employees in Winner will be better equipped to handle emergency situations.

BankWest employees recently completed CPR certification and learned how to use the bank’s new AED machine. The AED is a defibrillator which can be used on someone experiencing heart failure. Branch President Doug Long said every employee successfully completed the training.

“All seven of our branch employees are now CPR and AED certified,” Long said. “BankWest has a strong commitment to its customers and its communities. Having trained employees, who know how to react during emergency situations, is just one way of giving back to our community.”

In addition to CPR and AED certification, employees learned the proper procedures for assisting adults, children and infants who are choking. The training was provided by Sharon Naasz from the Winner Regional Healthcare Center. Completing the course were: Doug Long, Barry Gardner, Linda Nelson, Mary Sprenkle, Michael Scott, Heather Benedict and Lisa Curtis.

BankWest is a locally-owned, community bank with 17 branches in 14 communities including Armour, Delmont, Geddes, Gregory, Kadoka, Kennebec, Mitchell, Onida, Pierre, Rapid City, Selby, Tripp, Vivian and Winner.
