Winner/Colome baseball team opened the season with an 11-0 victory over Gregory on April 4.
The key batters were Holden Thieman and Kelly O’Bryan. Thieman had a double, single, two runs and an RBI and O’Bryan had a two singles, a run and an RBI.
Pitching for the Royals were Reed Harter, Kelly O’Bryan and Ty Bolton.
Winner High School boys and girls track teams both took second place at the Todd County Invite in Mission on Friday.
Todd County won both the boys and girls divisions.
Dan Aaker, Winner activities director, has been named the Region 7 Athletic Director of the Year.
The selection was made by the South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. The honors were announced at the spring conference March 31 in Sioux Falls.
Winner High School girls basketball coach Larry Aaker has been named the Region 8 coach of the year.
Aaker guided the Winner Lady Warriors to the State A tournament in Watertown. At the state meet, the Lady Warriors took second place as they fell to St. Thomas More in the championship game.
Devon Leiferman of the Winner High School boys basketball team has been named to the second team of the Class A all-state team.
The Winner senior helped the Warriors to the state tournament.
Leiferman averaged 17.1 points per game, 9.2 rebounds, 36 assists and 33 steals. He had a career high of 31 points against Todd County and 16 rebounds against MVP at state.
“Devon is a great kid. He worked hard over the summer to improve in all areas of his game,” said coach Brett Gardner. “He is a leader by example and made sure others followed this year. We are excited about Devon getting recognition and we know this is a great individual award but it goes hand in hand with our team success,” said Gardner.
Matt Campbell of Colome won both the shot put and the discus at the SCC meet in Lake Andes on April 5.
The Colome junior has his best throw in the discus with a throw of 160-1. In the shot put, Campbell won with a throw of 45-5.
The Cowboys scored 56 points in the meet.
Colome boys basketball coach Drew Weber has been named the Region 8 boys coach of the year. The selection was made by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.
Weber shares the award with Jay Jacobs of Little Wound.
Weber led the Cowboys to a 16-7 record and to the school’s first district championship in 37 years.
Reed Harter of Colome has been named to the Class B basketball all-state first team.
Harter, who was the point leader on the Colome basketball team, is the first Colome Cowboy since 1978 to be named to the all-state team and only the third one in school history.
Harter led Colome to its first district championship since 1978. The Cowboys lost to Corsica-Stickney in the regional championship.
Harter averaged 22.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.6 steals per game for the 16-7 Cowboys.
The 5-8 senior guard finished his career with 1,723 points.
“Reed has meant an awful lot to the program especially in the last two years that I have been here,” said coach Drew Weber. “It sounds cliché but Reed is the absolute gym rat. He is constantly working his game whether it be basketball, baseball or football and is one of the most driven athletes that I’ve ever seen.”
He was born at home on March 9, 1932 in Sparks, Neb., to George J. and Minnie Mae (Archer) Simons.
Bud attended grade school at Happy Hollow in Sparks. He worked for local farmers and ranchers until he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, and was stationed at the AFB Eielson Fairbanks, Alaska. On June 15, 1956, Bud married Nancy Worden and to this union three children were born Doreen; David and Dawn. Bud, Nancy and their children moved to Springview, where he drove a fuel delivery truck for the Co-op and later for Gary Ross.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nancy; brother, Giles; brothers-in-law, Ronald Kinzer, Marion Delfs, and Virgil Billings; sister-in-law, Diane Simons; niece, Lisa Delfs, and grandson, Keith Tucker.
He is survived by his three children, Doreen (Edward) Tucker of Springtown, Texas, David (Brinda) Simons of Winner, South Dakota and Dawn Simons of Millard, Nebraska. His sisters, Catherine Billings of Valentine, Nebraska, Evelyn Kinzer of Gregory, South Dakota, and Eunice Delfs of Chamberlain, South Dakota. Six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with three pending.
Funeral service were held at the New Hope Community Church in Springview, Neb. with Pastor George Kraft officiating the service. Special music selections of “Amazing Grace” was offered by Josh & Megan Bawek, as well as a CD selection of “Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind” by Confederate Railroad. Congregational selections were “When We All Get To Heaven” and “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder.”
Burial followed at the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Springview with Military Honors being presented by the Springview American Legion Post #98. Arrangements were handled through Hoch Funeral Home of Ainsworth, Neb. Memorials were suggested to the family in his name. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hochfuneralhome.com.
After posting the best round of the spring opening tournament at Bethel College Saturday in Newton, Kan., senior nthony Husher picked up a conference men’s golf honor for his efforts.
The Winner native shot a 68 in the opening round of the Bethel Spring Invitational to lead the 119-golfer field heading into the final round. Husher finished the event in a tie for fifth place with a 147 two-round score. He led the Tigers to a fourth-place finish out of 22 teams at Hesston Golf Club and Sand Creek Station Golf Club.
For his efforts, Husher has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week, it was announced by the conference last Tuesday.
In seven events and 11 rounds this season, Husher has an average round score of 74.73, with no round above 79.
Husher and the rest of the Tigers look to climb up the standings in the GPAC Qualifier No. 3 hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University.
