Cowgirls Win Consolation Championship

Colome girls basketball team won the consolation championship of the Southern Plains Conference tournament with a 44-35 victory over Jones County.

Kaydee Heath scored 11 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Saydee Heath had 10 points and Rayne Hermsen added 6 points and 12 rebounds. Makayla Shippy and Abby Kortan scored 8 and 7 points respectively.

Saydee Heath was named to the SPC all tournament team.

In the opening game, Colome was defeated by Burke/South Central 61-16.

Saydee Heath and Hermsen were the leading scorers with 5 and 4 points respectively.

In the second round of the tournament, Colome defeated Gregory in a tight game 49-47.

Rayne Hermsen led the way with 14 points while Saydee Heath added 10 points and 7 rebounds.

A last second shot by Colome’s Abby Kortan propelled the Cowgirls to a 52-51 victory over Platte-Geddes.

Makayla Shippy had a season high 21 points. Kortan added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the double double. Saydee Heath scored 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Warriors Claim First at Home Tournament

Winner Area wrestling team captured the championship of its home tournament on Saturday. The Warriors scored 233.5 points for first place. Mobridge/Pollock scored 230 points for second place.

The Warriors had three individual champions: Kaden Keiser, Wyatt Turnquist and Sam Kruger.

Also placing for Winner Area were Riley Orel, 5th; Jack Kruger, 4th; Atlas Willuweit, 2nd; Aaron Gilchrist, 5th; Trevor Peters, 2nd; Preston Norrid, 4th; Riggin Shippy, 3rd; Landon Debus, 5th; Bosten Morehart, 4th; Achilles Willuweit, 2nd; Elijah Blare, 3rd.

Lady Warriors Claim a Couple

Winner Lady Warriors basketball team had a strong first half as they defeated Bennett County 77-28 on Jan. 16.

Morgan Hammerbeck scored 20 points followed by Madyson Frazier with 10, Abby Marts and Ellie Brozik with 9 each and Maggie LaCompte, 8.

Marts pulled down 6 rebounds. Frazier had 6 steals and 5 assists.

Morgan Hammerbeck scored a season high 35 points to help Winner girls basketball team to a 72-58 victory over Pine Ridge on Jan. 18.

Gabby Kocer added 16 points for Winner.

Hammerbeck pulled down 15 rebounds.

Wrestlers Win Tri Valley Meet

Winner Area wrestling team had five champions and won first place at the Tri Valley tournament on Saturday.

The five champions were Atlas Willuweit, Riggin Shippy, Sam Kruger, Wyatt Turnquist and Kaden Keiser.

Also placing for Winner were Jack Kruger, 4th; Riley Orel, 3rd; Trevor Peters, 3rd; Preston Norrid, 3rd; Owen Duffy, 5th; Achilles Willuweit, 3rd and Elijah Blare, 3rd.

Winner Area wrestlers will host a triangular with Kimball and Philip on Friday and on Saturday, Jan. 20, is the big Winner Invitational wrestling tournament.

Lady Warriors Claim Couple of Victories

Winner girls basketball team scored lots of points last Tuesday as they defeated Valentine, Neb., 75-35 in Winner.

Leading the way for Winner was Morgan Hammerbeck with 19 points followed by Gabby Kocer with 11 and 9 each from Maggie LaCompte and Abby Marts.

Marts pulled down 7 of Winner’s 38 rebounds. Hammerbeck grabbed 6 and Kocer, 5.

On Thursday, Winner defeated Bon Homme 82-39.

Hammerbeck scored 23 points, Kocer, 17; LaCompte and Ellie Brozik, had 8 points each.

Abby Marts pulled down 7 rebounds. Sachtjen and LaCompte had 5 each.

On Saturday, Winner defeated Windom, Minn., 78-30 in the Border Clash in Garretson.

Morgan Hammerbeck led the scoring for Winner with 24 points followed by Maggie LaCompte with 14 and Gabby Kocer, 10.

Hammerbeck pulled down 8 of Winner’s 36 rebounds. Kelsey Sachtjen and Kocer had 6 each.

The Lady Warriors will travel to Pine Ridge on Jan. 18 and host Miller on Jan. 22.

 

Cowboys Win Consolation Championship

Colome boys basketball team won the consolation game in the Jones County Tournament as they defeated Kadoka Area 60-43 on Saturday.

Salonen led the scoring for Colome with 19 points followed by Thieman, 15; Calvin Ringing Shield, 14 and Kinzer, 10.

Thieman pulled down 10 rebounds, with six each from Ringing Shield and Salonen.

The Cowboys opened up the tournament on Thursday when they were defeated by Stanley County 51-46.

Salonen scored 13 points and Thieman, 11.

Thieman pulled down 6 rebounds and Jackson Kinzer and Salonen with 5 each.

On Friday, Colome defeated Philip 55-31.

Kinzer led the scoring for Colome with 15 points followed by Ringing Shield, 14 and Salonen, 13.

Thieman pulled down 11 of Colome’s 27 rebounds.

Colome will play at Gayville-Volin on Jan. 19 and will travel to Kimball/White Lake on Jan. 23.
