Campbell Helps Cowboys to Victory

Matt Campbell of the Colome track team qualified for the state meet in both the shot put and discus at the first meet of the season.

The Colome junior won first place in both the shot put and discus at the Gregory Invitational on March 29.

Campbell won the shot put with a throw of 50-7 and the discus with a throw of 151-8.

The Cowboys placed sixth with 44 points.

Cox Candidate for “Miss Basketball”

Allison Cox, standout basketball player for the Winner Lady Warriors, has been nominated for the Miss Basketball award.

The Hanson Anderson Mr. and Miss Basketball ceremony will be held May 1 in Sioux Falls at the Ramkota Inn. The luncheon will start at noon followed by the awards presentation.

From the group nominated will come one individual deemed the best male and female prep basketball player in South Dakota.

Cox, a first team all-state selection, helped the Lady Warriors to a runner-up spot in the state basketball tournament.  Also a Miss Basketball candidate is Anna Goodhope, daughter of former Winner residents Sam and Laura Goodhope.

Selected as a Mr. Basketball candidate is Brevin Kaiser, Pierre, son of Bill and Kim Kaiser, formerly of Winner.

Cox Named to All-State Team

Allison Cox of the Winner girls basketball team has been named to the first team Class A all state team.

Cox led the Winner Lady Warriors to victories over West Central and Webster Area in the state tournament before falling to St. Thomas More in the title game.

The 5-8 guard was a consistent all around player who averaged 15.8 points per game shooting 46 percent from the field.

“Allison is a very well rounded and versatile player,” said Winner coach Larry Aaker. “She is able to play all five positions on the floor whether it be playing point guard to break the press or taking advantage of mismatches in the post,” said Aaker.

“One of her strongest qualities is rebounding on both ends of the floor.”

Cox, Leiferman to Play in All-Star Game

Two Winner basketball players have been chosen to participate in the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association/Sanford Pentagon all-star games on April 10.

In the girls game, Allison Cox will play on the white team.  Larry Aaker, Winner High School girls basketball coach, will coach the white team.

On the boys side, Devon Leiferman will play for the white team.

The girls game will begin at 1 p.m. in the Pentagon and the boys game will follow at 3 p.m.

Winner Track Athletes Ready for Start of Season

There are several lettermen returning on the Winner High School boys and girls track teams.

Returning letterwinners for the girls are: Chloe Bartels, Calah Covey, Hayley Halverson, Sierra Hanson, Gabriel Kocer, Kyran Meek, Alexis Richey, Samantha Schuyler and Tedra Vrbka.

The returning lettermen for the boys are: Kayleb Brozik, Riley Calhoon, Drew DeMers, Luke Engel, John Kludt, Cameron Kuil, Izak Moleterno, Isaac Naasz, Nolan Sachtjen, Jayden Schroeder and Ryan Sherman.

Colome Team Eager to get on the Track

Colome High School track team has 14 athletes on the team.

The returning letterwinners for the Colome girls team are Haley Krumpus, Jaclyn Laprath, Callie Heath, Taylor Hrabanek, Morgan Hofeldt and Kaydee Heath.

Krumpus will run the 100, 4×200 relay, triple jump and long jump.  Laprath, who ran at the state meet last year will run the 800, mile, 2 mile and 4×800 relay.
Callie Heath will be in the 200, 400, 4×200 and 4×800.  Hrabanek will run the 200, 4×400 and 4×800.  Hofeldt will be in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays and for field events will be in the long jump.   Other girls on the team are Grace Campbell, a freshman, who will throw the shot put and discus; Hanna Rowe, shot put and discus; Matrix Noteboom 4×200, 4×400 and 100 and 200; Destannie Noteboom, 100, 200 and 400.

The returning letterman for the boys is Andrew Laprath. Laprath will run the 400, 800, mile plus will do the triple jump and high jump.  Other boys on the team are Wyatt Cahoy, shot and discus; Zane Rohde, shot put and discus; Matt Campbell, shot put and discus; Ethan Gehlsen, 100, 200, long jump and high jump.

Baseball Team Looking for an Exciting Season

The Winner/Colome baseball team will open the season on the road when they travel to Chamberlain on March 31. The junior varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game.  On April 2, the team will play at Parkston as they take on Beresford at 3 p.m. followed by Parkston at 5 p.m. These will be varsity games only.

There are 12 returning lettermen on the team. The lettermen include Reed Harter, Holden Thieman, Drew DeMers, Kelly O’Bryan, Ryan Sherman, Ty Bolton, Riley Calhoon, Nick Lantz, Levi McClanahan, Dalton Baker, Carter Brickman and Jeremiah Yeaman.

The two seniors on the team are Cameron Biggins and Harter, who is a two time all state shortstop.  Others on the team are Noah Cerv, Andrew Laprath, Phillip Jorgensen, Joren Bruun, Loren Moeller, Gage Watson, Jacob Beckers, Kameron Meiners, Oscar Pravecek, Ryder Mortenson, Colby Kaiser, Nathan Monk, Fred Whiting, Aaron Gilchrist, Brady Fritz, Evan Farner, Jesse Colson, Zach Bohnet, Landon Thieman and Owen Duffy.  The only player lost from last year’s team is Brandon Bicek.

The Royals finished last season with a 12-3 record. There only losses were twice to St. Thomas More and Platte.  The Royals were defeated by St. Thomas More in the regional championship game.

Winner Athletes Considered for Player of the Year

Devon Leiferman and Allison Cox, Winner High School basketball players, were among the athletes considered for the Mitchell Daily Republic’s player of the year.
Leiferman led the Warriors to the State A tournament where the team finished sixth. Leiferman averaged just under a double-double per game with 17 points and nine rebounds per contest. At the state tournament, Leiferman ended up tied for rebounds per game with 10.
Cox led a surging Winner girls team to a runner-up finish in Class A this season. The 5-8 senior had 15.1 points and grabbed 9.6 rebounds per game.

Fritz to be Honored at All Sports Event

Sydney Fritz of Winner is one of the top volleyball players in South Dakota. She will be honored on June 3 at the South Dakota sports awards program. The ceremony will be held at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

In addition to Fritz, the top volleyball player selected include: Shelby Zomermaand of Sioux Falls Christian; Jenna Reiff, Chester High School; Brianna Kusler of Aberdeen Central and Miranda Gallagher of Lead/Deadwood.
