Kristen Pistulka was crowned the homecoming queen at Mitchell High School.
She is the daughter of former Winner residents Bill Pistulka and Sarah Eddie Pistulka, both of Mitchell.
The grandparents are the late Bill Pistulka, Betty Pistulka Sattler, Randy and Valora Eddie, all of Winner.
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has issued a proclamation to celebrate National Employ Older Workers Week from Sept. 21-25. This week is designed to support workers past the traditional retirement age who have remained in the workforce or re-entered it.
“Employers should consider older workers when filling job openings,” said Gov. Daugaard. “Hiring people from this target group will grow the labor force to help meet South Dakota’s workforce needs.”
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, brings employment and training opportunities to older Americans across the nation.
The program currently serves about 100,000 seniors each year nationally. It has helped millions of Americans find jobs in community service and the private sector.
“The Department of Labor and Regulation helps older workers with their training and employment needs,” said state Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman. “Older workers have the characteristics employers are looking for and need, such as good judgment, punctuality and commitment to quality.”
The state Department of Labor and Regulation receives and administers the SCSEP grant. Participants are offered training opportunities in various fields while they prepare to transition into full- or part-time employment in the public and private sectors.
The Winner VFW #4674 & Auxiliary conducted their Buddy Poppy individual campaign drive on Labor Day prior to the parade in Winner.
The Buddy Poppy story is well known to most Americans, however, many do not know that the poppies used in South Dakota are made by the veterans at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital in Sturgis. South Dakota is one of the few states that the veterans still make their own poppies. In most states the poppies are assembled by machine.
The workers also handed out a blue tear drop sticker to remind individuals that September is Suicide awareness month. The veteran population has a high suicide rate and making the public aware of the unique stresses that face the veteran is part of VFW and Auxiliary goals.
Along with the above mentioned items, a card was given out to provide information regarding the Veterans Crisis Line. The public is encouraged to call the crisis line number at 1-800-273-8255 if they know of someone who appears to be in crisis or they themselves feel they need to get help. All calls are kept confidential and you may save a life by being alert and making that phone call.
For 28 years Tracie Haley has served as the youth director for the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF). She has retired from her position and was recently honored by the Winner Methodist Church.
Under Haley’s guidance, with the help of her husband, Jim, she has taught young people to learn to care for each other, the people of their church and those in the community. She has organized with skill and success many mission trips in the United States and outside of the country.
Prior to being the MYF youth director, Haley led the senior high Sunday School class at the Methodist Church. It was in 1987 that she took over the MYF program when Ed Coates was the pastor of the Winner Church.
LeAnn Thieman will be the speaker at the 2015 Pink Flamingo Ladies Night Out on Sept. 26 at St. Mary’s Hall. The doors will open at 6 p.m. The topic of Thieman’s talk will be “Balancing Life in Your War Zone.”
The Winner Area Breast Cancer and Support group (Pink Posse) encourages all women to come and join in an evening of friends, fellowship, fun and food. The group will celebrate and support those who have fought their battle with breast cancer.
Kade Watson and Sydney Schuyler were the overall 5K winners in the Winner Regional Healthcare Center road race.
The overall one mile winners were Pierce Nelson and Cici Watson.

There were several walkers who took part in the race.
Road race partners include: Lil’ Feller, Pink Posse, Winner Area Chamber of Commerce, Winner Physical Therapy and Winner Regional Clinic.
The opening kickoff set the tone for the game as the Winner Warriors defeated Wagner 56-6 Friday night. The No. 2 rated Warriors improved their record to 3-0.
The game ended with 2:44 left to play in the fourth quarter due to the mercy rule.
Lattrell Terkildsen took the opening kickoff and ran 90 yards for the touchdown to open the game. This was the first of 28 points that Winner scored in the first quarter.
“That opening kickoff was a great start to the game,” said coach Dan Aaker. “We played a well rounded game with a special teams touchdown, a defensive TD and a defensive interception by Windsor Barry for a TD. It is not very often that you see all three areas be able to score a touchdown,” said the coach.
Winner High School volleyball team defeated Bennett County in three games on Sept. 8. Winner won 25-13, 25-18, 25-20.
“We came out slow and had no intensity,” said coach Jaime Keiser. “We gave Bennett County too many unearned points and didn’t play up to our potential. We struggled passing in serve receive which kept us out of system,” said the coach. “It was a win but we needed to get more consistent to playing to our level and not to our opponents level,” she said.
The next action for Winner will be at the Big Dakota Conference meet in Ft. Pierre on Sept. 19.
Colome volleyball team fell to Lyman on Sept. 8. Scores were 16-25, 15-25 and 15-25.
Colome volleyball team defeated Jones County on Sept. 10. The scores were 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.
Winner Area cross country girls took second place at the Scotland Invitational on Sept. 8. The Winner area boys took fourth place.
Leading the Lady Warriors was Chloe Bartels who placed third followed by Sam Schuyler, 6th; Aryn Meiners, 14th and Hayley Halverson, 27th.
In the girls JV race, Megan Blare placed 2nd and Katherine Jankauskas was 7th.
The Winner area varsity boys were led by Colby Curtis, 6th; Grant Winter, 21st; Dawson Phillips, 26th and Wyatt Turnquist, 32nd.
In the junior varsity boys race, Cohl Turnquist placed 25th.
