West Central Renames Field after Uttecht

Jim Uttecht, formerly of Winner, long time West Central football coach, had the football field in Hartford renamed in his honor. The ceremony was held Aug. 29 and the field was renamed Jim Uttecht Field.
Uttecht is married to the former Diane Bloom of Winner. Jim Uttecht coached in Winner in the early 1970’s prior to moving to West Central where he had a long career.
Uttecht retired from coaching at the end of last season having spent the previous years as offensive coordinator after leading the Trojans as head coach from 1974 to 2003. During that span, Uttecht’s Trojans compiled a 223-64 record.

Ray Ringsmeyer Chosen for Honor

USA Wrestling has selected Ray Ringstmeyer as one of the three recipients of the 2015 President’s Award winners. Ringstmeyer, along with Sarah Jadach (Conn.) and Craig LaMont (Utah), was chosen for his exemplary work as the chairperson of South Dakota-USA Wrestling, the state affiliate of USA Wrestling. All three award winners will be part of the U.S. delegation at the World Championships in Las Vegas, Nev, from Sept. 7-12.

The South Dakota State Fair salutes veterans and active military personnel.
To show appreciation for their service, the fair will give all veterans and active military personnel free gate admission on Thursday, Sept. 3.
A Salute to Veterans program will be held at 10:30 a.m. on the NorthWestern Energy Freedom Stage. Sen. Bill Van Gerpen, Air National Guard lieutenant colonel (retired), will be the keynote speaker. SD Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Larry Zimmerman will also speak.

Flag Football Practice to Start

Tripp County NFL football league will conduct its practice on Aug. 27. The 4th and 5th graders will practice at 6:30 p.m. and the 2nd and 3rd graders at 7 p.m. The practice will be held at Warrior Field.

This is the practice when the players get to meet their coaches and find out which team they will on this season. The coaches are junior and senior high school football players from Winner and Colome.

Games will start on Aug. 29 and will run until Sept. 26.  Any questions concerning flag football can be directed to Brian Naasz at 842-0205 or 842-8170.

Warriors Open Football Season at Home against Mobridge

Excitement is building as members of the Winner High School football team look to the start of the 2015 season.  The Warriors open the season at home on Aug. 28 when they host Mobridge/Pollock. The game will start at 7 p.m.

There are 53 athletes out for football. This include five seniors, 19 juniors, 13 sophomores and 15 freshmen.

The five seniors on the team are Lattrell Terkildsen, Chase Watson, Riley Frazier, Windsor Barry and Cameron Biggins.
The Warriors have a strong group of lettermen returning. They include: Zach Lapsley, Ty Bolton, Jayden Schroeder, Nathan Smither, Riley Calhoon, Carter Brickman, Dalton Baker, Matt Smither, Payton Antoine, Lattrell Terkildsen, Riley Frazier, Chase Kingsbury, Cameron Kuil, Kayleb Brozik, Levi McClanahan, Nick Lantz, Drew DeMers, Damien Bingen, Isaac Naasz, Chase Watson, Ryan Sherman, Krockett Krolikowski, Wyatt Ewing, Jordan Turgeon, John Kludt, Chet Bryan, Nick Blare, Avery Gilchrist, Justus Gregg, Tristan Watzel and Alex Schaeffer.

WHS Volleyball Team Opens Play

Winner High School volleyball team is ready to start the season.

They have been involved in two matches prior to this issue of the Winner Advocate hitting the newsstands.  The Lady Warriors were in a jamboree in Winner on Saturday and Tuesday they hosted Bon Homme.

Returning letterwinners are Bailey Volmer, Calah Covey, Dacey Kocer, Madyson Frazier, Sydney Fritz, Kylie Horstman, Skyler VanDenHul, Rachel Sherman and Hanna LaCompte.  Edith Eagle Hawk is the team manager.

Cowboys Open Season on Aug. 28

Eleven lettermen will lead the Colome High School football team as they open the season Aug. 28 at home against Corsica/Stickney.
Returning lettermen are seniors, Reed Harter and Allan Varilek; juniors Kelly O’Bryan, Wiley Heath, Noah Hermsen, Nate Krumpus, Will Cahoy, Jordan Shippy and Isaac Kortan; sophomores Nash Atteberry and Zane Rohde.

Boys Golf Season Underway

Winner High School boys golf team has one tournament under its belt. The Warriors came away with a second place finish in the Mobridge Invitational on Thursday.

There are six players on the WHS team—Sam Hossle, Duncan English, Luke Engel, Matt Hartley, Jade Whitley and Aiden Barfuss.
The returning lettermen are Hossle, English and Engel.

Cross Country Team Prepares for Season

The numbers are up this year on the Winner Area cross country team, especially among the younger athletes.
The returning letterwinners for the Lady Warriors are Chloe Bartels, Hayley Halverson, Samantha Schuyler and Jaclyn Laprath.  The returning lettermen for the boys team are Cohl Turnquist, Colby Curtis, Wyatt Turnquist, Grant Winter Dawson Phillips.
Schuyler, Bartels and Laprath all ran at the state cross country meet last year.
