Pollard Promoted At First Fidelity Bank

Eric Pollard has been promoted to assistant vice president at First Fidelity Bank of Winner.  He started working at the bank in 2012 as a loan officer.

Pollard is a member of the Winner Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors and is on the board of the local Pheasants Forever chapter. He is a member of the South Dakota Umpires Association and umpires at baseball games. He is also a certified high school football referee.

Pollard graduated from the University of Sioux Falls in 2010 with a degree in business management.  Pollard is married to the former Darci Diez of Winner and they have two children: Kenli, age 3 and Karter, 2 months old.

Benefit Planned for Teacher

A baked potato benefit will be held Feb. 12 from 5-8 p.m. at the Winner Armory to help defray medical costs for Winner High School teacher Jon Hanson.  Hanson recently had heart surgery. Hanson is a Winner High School math teacher.

Winner will host McLaughlin in a boys and girls basketball doubleheader on Feb. 12.  There will be a free will donation for the benefit and carryouts will be available.

Four Win Superior

Four Winner High School actors were honored with superior awards at the regional one act play competition in Pierre on Jan. 27.

Sophomore Matthew Hartley, juniors Kenzie Irick and Elizabeth Jankauskas and senior Grant Winter earned the honors for their roles in the one act play “Fire Exit.” This is a drama about the reactions to a tragic fire at a high school.

Winner finished fourth in the competition with the top two advancing to the state competition.

Others in the WHS contest play are: freshman Brielle Bachmann, junior Nick Blare; seniors Molly Connot and Duncan English. The play was directed by Kara Connot and Kelly Assman with Dan Patmore as the technical director.

The directors appreciate Sid Durrin, Lauren Norrid, Shannon Duffy and Emily Moser for their technical help in the production.  The one act play was well received recently in local performances.

Aaker Named “Football Coach of the Year”

Winner football coach Dan Aaker has been named the South Dakota High School Coaches Association 2015 coach of the year for football.

Aaker led the Winner High School football team to a perfect 12-0 season and the class 11B state championship.

The SDHSCA coaches of the year will be recognized at the annual awards banquet to be held in Mitchell on July 12 in conjunction with the summer coaches clinic.

Eight Wrestlers Place in Aberdeen

Winner Area wrestling team took 6th place at the Lee Wolf Invite in Aberdeen on Saturday. The Warriors placed eight wrestlers in the tournament.

Kayleb Brozik was the champion at 170 pounds as he won by injury default over Bradley Nelson of Aberdeen Central.

Wyatt Turnquist took third place at 106 pounds. He won by major decision 11-2 over Daymon Steuck of Aberdeen Central.

Fourth place went to Trevor Peters and Colby Curtis. Peters, 120, was pinned in 2:17 by Will Jarrott of Aberdeen Central.
Curtis, 126, lost 10-3 to Jaden Shepard of Mobridge/Pollock.

Fifth place went to Avery Gilchrist, 145, as he pinned Nick Brandner of Ipswich/Leola in 55 seconds.

Also placing fifth was Jayden Schroeder, 195, as he won by pin in 1:27 over Patrick Sproles of Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

Taking 8th place were Riggin Shippy and Cohl Tunquist. Shippy, 152, lost 7-2 to Nathan Powell of Chamberlain.
Turnquist, 182, was pinned in 2:47 by Mason Wickheurst of Watertown.

Warriors Battle Hard in Mt. Vernon Game

Winner High School boys basketball team suffered a defeat Friday night as they lost to Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 63-59.
After being down by 13 points, the Warriors came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. However, Mt. Vernon/Plankinton prevailed with the victory.
Devon Leiferman led the scoring for the Warriors with 19 points followed by Lattrel Terkildsen and Krockett Krolikowski with 10 each.

Leiferman and Krolikowski each had 7 rebounds.  Terkildsen and Drew DeMers each had 4 assists.  Leaders in man makers were Terkildsen, 2; DeMers and Wyatt Ewing, 1 each.

 

Winner Boys Battle Todd County

Winner High School boys basketball team was nipped by Todd County 75-70 at the end of the game on Jan. 26.  The Warriors were up by 11 points at one point in the game.

Devon Leiferman had a season high of 31 points. Lattrel Terkildsen scored 15 points and Krockett Krolikowski with 9 points.  Leiferman and Cameron Kuil both had 10 rebounds.  Terkildsen and Drew DeMers had 5 assists.

Warriors Fall to Pine Ridge

Winner High School boys basketball team was defeated by Pine Ridge 60-53 on Jan. 21.  Winner led 18-11 at the end of the first quarter and 31-28 at the half.

Devon Leiferman and Krockett Krolikowski both scored 16 points with Cameron Kuil adding 9.

Kuil had 11 rebounds, Leiferman, 8 and Krolikowski, 7.  Drew DeMers had 6 assists.

Winner Falls to Mt. Vernon

Winner girls basketball team fell to one of the top rates teams in the state Friday night. Mt. Vernon/Plankinton, rated No. 2, downed the Lady Warriors 60-34. Winner fell behind 22-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Bailey Volmer scored 9 points, Sydney Fritz, 8 and Kylie Horstman, 7.

The Lady Warriors rebounded from their loss with a victory over Miller Saturday night in Winner. The Lady Warriors won the game 58-40. This was a make-up game from last Monday when a strong winter storm called off school last week.

Allison Cox had a game high 24 points. She had 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Fritz added 9 points.
