Kauer Family Donates to Community Foundation

The family of the late Lawrence “Larry” Kauer donated $3,000 in memorial money to the Tripp County 4-H trust fund that is maintained by the Tripp County Community Foundation.

Kauer’s family wanted to put the money someplace where it would be used in remembrance of him into perpetuity. They also requested that the earnings from these funds be used to sponsor the Tripp County Club feeder calf pen of three contest. This is a new contest that was started in 2014 and until now has not had a permanent sponsor. Larry enjoyed taking care of his calves. He was excited that a young 4-Her chose to show one of his calves and he loved helping wash and groom that calf.

As most people know, Larry lived to help others and especially enjoyed those things where kids were involved.

50 Years of Selling Avon

Fifty years ago, Clarice Poler of Colome started selling Avon products.

Avon is the world famous manufacturer and seller of cosmetics and personal care products.

For the Colome woman it was a change to start an exciting career.

She started selling on Nov. 8, 1966 and has no plans to retire. However, this month she will celebrate a milestone with Avon.

Her sister, Dorothy Rohde sold Avon and was moving to town. She asked Clarice if she would like to take over her job. Poler explained she received encouragement from several people to take on the new job.

She was assigned a certain area to sell and had between 40 to 50 customers. Mainly working in the rural area. She would drive and visit the women, showing them samples of new products and taking their orders.

Winner Warrior football team was not going to let any team scare them off in the quarterfinals
Monday in Winner.

The Warriors shut out Tri Valley 40-0 to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.

This was a rematch of last year’s state 11B championship game where Winner defeated Tri Valley.

The Warriors will host the semifinal game on Saturday when Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan comes to town.

Colome Advances to Semifinals

Jackson Kinzer helped the Colome Cowboys to a 38-8 playoff football victory over Hamlin Monday in Colome.

Kinzer scored two touchdowns and also ran back a Hamlin punt for a touchdown to give Colome a 30-0 lead before the half.

Colome will now play Corsica-Stickney on Saturday Nov. 5 in Corsica in the semifinal playoff game. The game on Saturday will be at 7 p.m.  Colome, 9-1, played Corsica-Stickney in the first game of this year’s football season.

Hamlin ended its season with a 7-3 record.

Warriors Shut out Parkston

Top seeded Winner carried on where they left off during the regular season as they shut out Parkston 52-0 in the first round of the Class 11B football playoffs Oct. 25 in Winner.

The game ended at the half due to the mercy rule.

The Warriors are 9-0 and played Tri Valley Monday night in Winner on the second round of the playoffs.

Last year in the state championship Winner defeated Tri Valley 45-6. The last three state championships that Winner won they have faced Tri Valley.

Lady Warriors End Regular Season with MVP

Winner volleyball team defeated Platte-Geddes in four sets on Oct. 24. The scores were 25-23, 25-18, 10-25, 25-18.

“Platte-Geddes is a very balanced and scrappy team,” said coach Jaime Keiser. “We came out ready to play and played well. We knew we would have to play consistent to win.

“We did a great job of serving and attacking the ball which kept Platte out of system. We lost focus in set 3 but I was proud that we never gave up. We played together as a team with a lot of intensity,” said Keiser.

In the final regular season match, the Lady Warriors hosted Mt. Vernon/Plankinton on Thursday. It was senior night as two seniors Rachel Sherman and Sydney Hollenbeck and their parents were honored.

The Lady Warriors fell to MVP in three sets 19-25, 8-25, 20-25.

The regions will start Nov. 3 with Winner hosting St. Francis at 7:30 p.m.

Cross Country Girls Make History

For the first time in Winner High School history the Winner Area girls cross country team placed at the state meet.  The Lady Warriors took sixth place at the state meet in Huron on Oct. 22.

A 7th place finish by runner Sidda Schuyler makes her the highest placing girls cross county runner in the school’s history.

In addition to Schuyler, runner for Winner area were Chloe Bartels, Jaclyn Laprath, Sam Schuyler, Aryn Meiners and Meagan Blare.

Kade Watson led the Winner boys as he placed 33rd. Both Schuyler and Watson are only 7th graders. “We will be hearing their names for a long time,” said Coach Jayd Schuyler.  Izak Moleterno also ran for the Winner team at state.

“It is a good way to end the season and will allow us a lot to build on for the future,” added the coach.

Ruth Elaine Menke, 87

Ruth Elaine Menke daughter of Fred and LaVern (Ziegler) Menke was born December 12, 1928 in Gregory, South Dakota. She received her early education at a rural school near Clearfield, SD and graduated high school in Mission, SD. She then attended Chadron State College graduating with a Bachelor of Science –Education.

Ruth Married Raymond Leo Schaefer on September 27, 1952 in Valentine, Neb.. They made their home in Valentine and were blessed with two daughters Sandra and Terri. Ruth taught 1st grade for 40 years. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Nebraska Education Association, Sandhills Area Foundation, St. Nicholas Catholic Church and Tuesday Morning Bible Study. Ruth was a very caring person and always ready to help anyone in need.

She passed away Oct. 26, 2016 at Cherry County Hospital at age 87.

Milda Anna Dorthea Mulford, 102

Milda was born December 6, 1913 to William and Mary (Petera) Hoppe near Wausa, Neb. She was baptized January 4, 1914 at Golgatha Lutheran Church near Wausa. She moved with her family to Fairfax in 1928. She attended Star Valley School through the eighth grade and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax on April 29, 1928.

On August 3, 1935 Milda married Perry Mulford. They were blessed with four children – Donald, Keith, James and Sharyl. They began their marriage living in Bonesteel where Perry worked for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Work related moves were made to Norfolk, NE, Spencer, NE, Winner, SD and back to Norfolk, NE. Upon retirement, they returned to Bonesteel.

After Perry’s death in 1991, Milda continued to maintain her home until 2006 when she moved to the Haisch Haus. In 2011, health issues caused her to move to the Lake Andes Health Care Center, where she lived until the time of her death.

Milda was a lifelong homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking and quilting. She enjoyed taking care of her children and babysitting other children. She was an active member of the Over 50 Club in Bonesteel.
