Covey Receives Scholarship

Calah Covey of Hamill received the James “Buddy” Carmichael memorial scholarship which was presented during the Black Hills Stock Show banquet.

James Carmichael passed away in 2007 and his family who ranches near Meadow created a scholarship to honor the memory of this man who had a great appreciation for livestock, especially Hereford cattle.

Covey is a senior at Winner High School and plans to attend South Dakota State University in the fall. She will pursue an animal science degree with emphasis on reproduction. Covey would like to go into embryology while maintaining her Hereford herd.

Colome Band Students Honored

Colome High School band students participated in the Region V instrumental contest in Parkston on Feb. 24.

Jeremiah Yeaman won a superior in a snare drum solo.

Callie Heath received a superior in a flute solo and Kaydee Heath received a superior in a clarinet solo.

Wiley Heath and Isaac Kortan won an excellent in a trombone duet.

Cheyenne Heath is the band instructor.

Bling Fling Set for March 5

The Spirit Gems fourth annual Bling Fling will be held Saturday, March 5 at the Winner Armory. It will start at 9:30 a.m. and the doors will open at 8:30 a.m.

There will be 300 athletes performing from several towns. In addition to Winner, teams will be from Yankton, Mitchell, Pierre, Miller, Platte and Valentine, Neb.

This is the first year the event will be a judged competition.   There will be dance and cheer teams as well as dance solos.

The event will feature vendors, a concession stand, a silent auction and prizes.

Awards will be presented around 3 p.m.

Colome Wins 63-30

Colome High School boys basketball team closed out the regular season with 63-30 win over Tripp-Delmont-Armour on Thursday.

Reed Harter scored 25 points and Holden Thieman added 19 points.

Thieman pulled down 9 rebounds, Harter pulled down 6 of Colome’s 26 rebounds, and Kelly O’Bryan added 5 boards.

Four Wrestlers Place at State

Four Winner Area wrestlers placed in the State B tournament this weekend in Rapid City.  The Warriors took eight wrestlers to state.

Kayleb Brozik, 170, won fourth place as he lost a 6-1 decision to Nick Casperson of Beresford.

Colby Curtis came away from the state tournament with a victory in the 5th and 6th place match at 126 pounds. Curtis won 1-0 over Dalton Bodewiz of Marion-Freeman.

Wyatt Turnquist, 106, took 8th place. Turnquist was pinned by Sterling Rausch of Webster Area in 2:26.

Also placing 8th was Jayden Schroeder at 195 pounds. Schroeder was defeated 5-1 by Cooper Baloun of Redfield-Doland.

Trevor Peters and Cohl Turnquist also won matches at the tournament and came up just short of reaching the podium. Also wrestling was Avery Gilchrist.

As a team, Winner Area placed 19th with 34 points.

Lady Warriors Advance to Championship

The excitement just continues to build for the Winner High School girls basketball team.  Thursday they defeated Pine Ridge 50-47 in a thriller to advance to the championship of the Region 7A tournament.

Cox led the Lady Warriors in scoring with 20 points. Volmer added 14 points and Fritz, 8.

Cox was strong on the boards pulling down 15 rebounds.

With an 18-4 record, Winner played Little Wound on March 1 in Pine Ridge for the region championship and a chance to play in the state tournament. Complete results of this game will be in the March 9 issue of the Winner Advocate.

Lady Warriors Battle Back in Regional Game

A deficit of 20 points could not stop the Winner Lady Warriors in the first round of the Region 7A tournament last Tuesday in Winner.  The Lady Warriors came away with a 63-59 victory over St. Francis.

Cox led the scoring for Winner with 19 points with Kocer, 10 points; Kylie Horstman, 9 and Bartels, 8.

Cox pulled down 11 of Winner’s 35 rebounds. Bartels grabbed 6 rebounds.

Warriors Open Region with Huge Victory

Winner High School boys basketball team won the opening game of the Region 7A tournament Monday in Winner. The Warriors defeated Todd County 73-60.

In Monday’s game, Winner had four players in double figures. Leading the scoring was Devon Leiferman with 27 points followed by Lattrel Terkildsen with 15, Drew DeMers, 13 and Trevor Bertram, 10.

Leiferman pulled down 15 rebounds, Terkildsen 11 and Cameron Kuil, 10.  DeMers had 8 assists.
