Wrestlers open with a victory

Winner Area wrestling team picked up where they left off last season.

The Warriors won first place at the Kimball/White Lake Invitational on Saturday. The Warriors saw 15 wrestlers reach the podium with nine finalists and six champions.

The Warriors racked up 221.5 points in its first tournament of the season.
Riley Orel, wrestling at 138 pounds, was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

Kaden Keiser bumped up to 126 pounds after winning the Class B state title last season. Keiser beat Wagner’s Lance Soukup by forfeit in the finals.

Fellow state champion Trevor Peters beat Sunshine Bible Academy’s Teigan Clark by decision, 7-1.

Another Winner state champ Sam Kruger beat Parkston’s Cordell Murtha by a 5-3 decision at 160 pounds.

The Warriors also got first place wins from Riley Orel, Jack Kruger (145) and Achilles Willuweit (285).

Also placing for the Warriors were Owen Duffy (182) who took second and Landon Debus took second at 195 pounds.

Preston Norrid (220) also took second place.

Placing fourth for Winner were Jude Sargent, Joey Cole and Charley Pravecek.

Cailob Week (152) took fifth place and sixth went to Aaron Gilchrist (145) and Maxton Brozik (106).

“I was happy with how we did in this tournament,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “Looking back I think we lost a few we should not have lost. I know going into the tournament we were not yet in shape but we are in better shape than I thought we were.”

The coach said it was nice having nine finalist with six winning individual titles. It was also awesome that Riley Orel was recognized as the outstanding wrestler.

“He has been working hard in and out of practice so it is nice for him to get that recognition,” said Novotny.

“We are going to have to hit on a little technique this week and get ready for the start of our dual season on Thursday.”

On Dec. 12 the Warriors will compete in a triangular with Wagner and Gregory in Gregory.

On Saturday, Winner will compete in the Gregory Invitational starting at 9 a.m.

New year and new goals

Eldridge named to Hall of Fame

Lou Nelson, 96

Funeral services for LouElla Nelson, 96, Winner, formerly of Millboro, were held Nov. 23 at the First Christian Church in Winner. Burial was in the Winner Cemetery.

LouElla Mae Rix, one of nine children born to Henry and Dora (Montgomery) Rix, came into this world on Aug. 13, 1923, on a farm five miles north of Springview, NE. She grew up in the Springview area and graduated from Keya Paha County High School in 1942. As a young lady, Lou worked at various jobs around Springview and Ainworth.

On Jan. 30, 1943, Lou was united in marriage to Erwin Herrmann. To this union, two children were born: Larry Erwin and Dianne Lynn.

On Oct. 20, 1957, Lou married Glen Nelson and was blessed with three more daughters: Linda Jean, Darla Lyn, and Nancy Eileen. The couple, along with their combined family, made their home in Millboro where Glen served as the rural mail carrier and Lou took on the role of housewife and mother, teaching their girls to cook, sew, and do various other domestic skills.

She was a wonderful cook, and her children and grandchildren will forever remember the homemade dishes and fruit jellies she delighted in preparing for them.

Lou was a member of the United Church of Christ in Millboro and the Millboro Extension Club. She was also a member of several service connected organizations.

Glen and Lou had a full and happy life together until Glen’s passing in December 1996. Lou continued to live in the family home in Millboro until January 2015, when health issues forced her to move to the Elder Inn assisted living facility in Winner.

She later transferred to Winner Regional Long Term Care after suffering a severe stroke in September 2019.

LouElla passed away at the Winner Nursing Home on Nov. 18, 2019.
Lou is survived by four daughters: Dianne Herrmann, Winner, SD; Linda (Larry) May, Bassett, NE; Darla (Rich) Miles, Omaha, NE; and Nancy (Richard) Kloucek, Scotland, SD; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

‘She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Glen; eight siblings: Mildred, Glenn, Nelda, Ortha, Dortha, Melvin, Norman, and Marvin; her son, Larry (Butch) Herrmann; and grandson, Shawn Coleman.

Arlyn Lynn Feyereisen, 75

Funeral services for Arlyn Feyereisen, 75, Iona, were held Dec. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Gregory. Burial followed at the Iona Cemetery.

Arlyn Lynn Feyereisen was born on Jan. 20, 1944 in Chamberlain, S.D. to William and Lucy (Walker) Feyereisen. He joined two brothers, William Dean and Gordon James. They grew up in Iona. Arlyn attended grade school in Iona except for two years when he attended the McKinley school. He graduated from Gregory High School in 1962.

While in high school he worked for Jay Seeley in the jewelry store. He carried out groceries, stocked shelves, and offloaded the trucks when Buches was on Main Street. He worked for Tilton Motors changing oil and replacing ties.

On Nov. 29, 1963, Arlyn married Linda Connick. He was blessed with two children, Theresa Jean and Arlyn Lee. He had three grandchildren, Alan Dean, Kaleb William, and Kaelee Jean, and one great-grandson, Dartanian Scott. He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren how to garden, farm, hunt, fish, milk goats, drive cars and tractors, and play cards.

He attended Springfield College and received a degree in Elementary Education, attending school in the summer and teaching during the school year. He started teaching at the McKinley school in Iona. In 1967 they moved to Ideal where he taught for 4 years at the Ideal school, and 4 years at Eden school. They moved west of Winner and taught at the Sunnyside school 4 years, Star Valley 2 years, then taught 3rd grade at Westside Elementary in Winner until he retired from teaching.

Along with teaching, Arlyn helped his dad on the farm. They put up hay and grew winter wheat, two things that allowed him to continue teaching. With his dad’s passing he took over the farm. Arlyn continued farming with the help of Arly, friends, and neighbors.

Arlyn enjoyed spending time with his friends, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping at Snake Creek, activities he shared with his family.

When Alice asked him if he would serve on the Cemetery Board he took his responsibility seriously. He worked with Emmett several years to get the cemetery surveyed. With the help of many volunteers they marked the corners of each section of the cemetery. It was his desire to make sure the cemetery would be maintained for the Iona community.

Arlyn passed away at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD on Nov. 30, 2019 at the age of 75.

Arlyn was preceded in death by three brothers, Marlyn Lee, William Dean, and Gordon James, and his parents William James and Lucy Arlene, and his father-in-law, Harold Connick, and two brothers-in-law, Harold Connick Jr., and Michael Connick.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Jean, children Arlyn (Melissa) Feyereisen of Sioux Falls, and Theresa (Brian) Vaughn of Dahlonega, Ga., grandchildren Alan (Courtney) Vaughn of Cumming, Ga., Kaleb Feyereisen, and Kaelee Feyereisen, and great-grandson Dartanian Scott Vaughn.
