Several young wrestlers placed in the 15th annual Winner Quarterback Club AAU wrestling tournament Jan. 25.

Results include:

Lady Warriors Fall to Pine Ridge

Winner Lady Warriors basketball team played an excellent first half as they hosted Pine Ridge Thursday night.

Pine Ridge out-scored Winner in the third and fourth quarters and defeated the Lady Warriors 70-62.

“We had a great start to the game and played very well in the first half,” said Coach Larry Aaker. “In the second half we made too many mistakes and Pine Ridge took advantage of them like good teams do.”

The Lady Warriors led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and led 34-23 at the half.

Warriors Keep Undefeated Season Alive

The unbeaten string for the Winner High School boys basketball team remains alive as they won their 11th game on Thursday over Wagner. On the road, Winner came up with a 69-52 victory.

The Warriors led 35-26 at the half.

Brendan Harter led the scoring for Winner with 21 points followed by Devon Leiferman with 17 and Nathan Galbraith and Sam Naasz with 10 each.

“We started the game with a lot of fire and took an early lead,” said coach Brett Gardner. “We traded baskets for most of the second and third quarter. Then in the fourth quarter we dug down and defended and were able to pull away and get some guys some playing time,” said the coach.

Cowboys Roll to Victory

Colome boys basketball team defeated Andes Central 75-24 on Jan. 20 in Colome.

The Cowboys led 26-2 at the  end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Colome outscored its opponents 16-5.

Reed Harter led the scoring for Colome with 25 points and Holden Thieman added 16.

The Cowboys were strong on the boards as Thieman pulled down 16 rebounds, Will Cahoy, 11 and Harter 7.

“I thought we played really well,” said coach Drew Weber. “We were down a couple of players due to flu and were able to get solid production from all nine guys that were dressed for the varsity game. We talked pre-game about creating turnovers and dominating the rebounds and we did a fantastic job and that really was the key to the win,” said the coach.

“Sometimes in games like this it is easy for the guys to lack energy but I was really happy with how hard we played for the full 32 minutes. Having Chase Hrabanek back is going to be great for our team. He provides a little more senior leadership and toughness that will benefit us. Nobody works harder than he does and I’m happy for him that he has recovered from his injury and is back on the court where he belongs,” said Weber.

Gaye Hambek, 73

Gaye Hambek  was born on July 18, 1941 south of Colome, SD in her grandparent’s home. She was born the oldest of three girls to Carl and Rita (Amick) Stroschine.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 13 at Grace Fellowship Church in Spearfish.  Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to benefit the Spearfish Ambulance Service and Northern Hills Relay for Life.

Mervin John Higgins, 85

Mervin John Higgins was born July 20, 1929 to John and Ada (Brown) Higgins at Brocksburg, Nebraska.  He died January, 20, 2015 at the Gregory Community Hospital at the age of 85 years.

Funeral services were held Jan. 23 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Butte, Neb with Father Andrzej Wyrostek officiating. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery at Naper.
