Lady Warriors Qualify for State Cross County

 

state cross co qualifiersWinner Area girls cross country team picked up third place at the Region 4A meet Thursday in Chamberlain and qualified as a team for the state meet.  The Lady Warriors edged out Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and St. Francis to earn the third spot.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton won first place and Todd County took second.

Winner had two runners finish in the top 10 with Chloe Bartels taking 8th and Jaclyn Laprath taking 10th.  Bartels finished in 19:54.94 and Laprath crossed the finish line in 20:10.
Samantha Schuyler finished 15th and Aryn Meiners finished 22nd which was key for the Winner Area team to finish in the third spot.  Megan Blare placed 26th and Hayley Halverson, 40th.

Winner coach Jayd Schuyler said third place was a realistic goal for the team. “We knew we had a chance if we put forth the effort and we had some really solid performances to make the difference,” said Schuyler.

On the boys side, senior Colby Curtis qualified for the state meet by placing 14th in a 18:10.04.  Winner Area boys finished 6th as a team. Also placing for the varsity boys were Grant Winter, 25th; Dawson Phillips, 36th and Wyatt Turnquist, 43rd.

The state cross country meet will be held Oct. 24 in Sioux Falls.
