The Winner/Colome and South Central amateur baseball teams have each joined new leagues this season after the Rosebud TMT League disbanded due to a lack of teams.

“We ended up with just two teams in the Rosebud League and both teams still wanted to play, so we decided to split up,” said Winner/Colome coach Kevin Graesser.

“The Sunshine League allowed us to join their league and are very appreciative of that,” said Graesser.

With Winner/Colome joining the Sunshine League, the league is up to nine teams. They include Mitchell Mad Dogs, Parkston Mudcats, Parkston Bullheads, Alexandria, Dimock-Emery, Corsica/Stickney, Platte and Mount Vernon.

“No matter where we play, we are going to have to travel,” said Graesser.

The Pheasants finished second to Alexandria in the 2013 Class B state championship played in Sioux Falls.

The Winner Teeners split a double header with Lead-Deadwood Sunday afternoon at Leahy Bowl.

In the first game, Winner won 8-2. Riley Calhoon was the winning pitcher.

Luke Engel had two hits.

In the second game, Winner lost 7-5. Willy Schroeder was the losing pitcher. Cale Meiners had two hits.

Friday in Chamberlain  the Teeners defeated Chamberlain 8-2. Carter Brickman was the winning pitcher.

Ryan Sherman had a double.

The Teeners will host its tournament Saturday and Sunday.

Winner Junior Teeners lost a hard fought game with Colome in extra innings 9-4 on June 4.

Kameron Meiners and Gage Watson shared duties on the mound and combined for 7 strikeouts.

Phillip Jorgensen reached base safely twice and scored a run.

“I was pleased with how we played our first game,” said coach Jon Hanson. “We have quite a few things still to work on but our pitching and defense kept us in the game.”

On Friday, Winner traveled to Chamberlain and came away with a 15-4 victory.

“Our offense showed up and exploded for 10 hits,” said Hanson. He said Nolan Sachtjen was sharp on the mound with seven strikeouts in only three innings of work. “We showed up to play and looked great in every aspect of the game. Good things happen when we can put the ball in play and make plays defensively,” said coach Hanson.

Dimock-Emery defeated the Winner/Colome amateur baseball team 6-1 in a Sunshine League game on Friday in Emery.

Tarrell Bauld took the loss for the Pheasants allowing five runs in five innings pitched.

The Pheasants will play at Alexandria on June 13 in a Sunshine League game.

Winner/Colome Legion baseball team swept a double header over Valentine, Neb., Sunday.

The Royals won 3-1 in the first game in five innings.

Reed Harter threw the complete game giving up one run on two hits, 1 walk and 10 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Riley Calhoon, Kelly O’Bryan and Nick Lantz each with singles. Calhoon had two RBIs.

In the second game, Winner/Colome won 8-4 in eight innings.

Landon Engel started on the mound and pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up four runs on 4 hits, 6 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Harter pitched 2 2/3 of an inning in relief to earn the win. He have up no runs on 1 hit, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

Jordan Turgeon pitched the 8^th inning giving up no runs on no hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

Calhoon had 3  singles, 2 RBI and a 2 stolen bases. Harter had a double and a single with 3 runs scored  and 3 stolen bases. O’Bryan added a double and 2 RBIs.

“I was pleased with the way we played overall since this was our first game of the year for a few of the guys,” said coach Drew Weber. “I thought that we pitched really well and limited our errors in the field, but we were far from perfect. It’s always nice to win  a couple of games to start the  season, especially in extra innings in the second game. We have a lot of young players filling in and they stepped up for us Sunday,” said the coach.

The next action for the Legion team will be Friday, June 12, went they host Gregory County at Leahy Bowl at 7 p.m.

Winner Teeners opened the season with a 7-2 victory over Colome Thursday in Winner.

Ty Bolton was the winning pitcher and threw a  complete game.

Leading hitters for Winner were Bolton with a double and a single and Noah Cerv with a triple.

Winner scored four runs in the fourth inning.

The losing pitcher for Colome was Jeremiah Yeaman. Also pitching were Kelly O’Bryan and Jackson Kinzer.

Drew DeMers had two hits for Colome.

Winner High School boys track team had two relays and three individuals that place at the state track meet. The Lady Warriors team was led on the medal stand by senior Deloris Herman who placed in both the shot put and discus.

The Winner boys medley relay took runner up honors as at the state track meet as they placed second, the highest finish of any Winner relay team at state. Running in the finals Saturday in Rapid City were Nick Hossle, Windsor Barry, Nathan Galbraith and Coleton Schuyler. They ran a time of 3:43.55.

“They were disappointed they did not come back for the state championship but the second place finish was remarkable,” said Aaker. “I could not have asked more out of those guys, they ran their best.”

On Friday in Spearfish, the medley relay team qualified for the finals. “The biggest thing about the medley was we needed to make the second day. Credit Nathan Galbraith for stepping up and running the 800. This is not his favorite race but he was willing to sacrifice for the team,” said Aaker.

Since Coleton Schuyler had to run the open half on Friday, he did not run in the medley.

The  first day running the medley were Nick Hossle, Windsor Barry, Kayleb Brozik and Nathan Galbraith. Galbraith ran a 2:02 half and was able to hold off the Vermillion runner at the finish line assuring Winner a good spot in Saturday’s finals at the South Dakota School of Mines track.

“That was huge winning our heat,” said Aaker.

Winner/Colome club baseball team defeated Todd County 12-2 in playoff action May 26 at Leahy Bowl in Winner.

Riley Calhoon started on the mound and pitched two innings, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit, 6 walks and 2 strikeouts. Ty Bolton earned the win in relief pitching 4 innings, giving up no runs on no hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

At the plate, Brandon Bicek had a double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scores and 2 stolen bases.

Reed Harter had a single, 1 RBI, 2 runs scores and 2 stolen bases. Bolton had 2 RBI and Nick Lantz scored 3 runs.

“I thought we came out a little unfocused and Todd County capitalized by scoring 2 quick runs in the top of the first inning,” said coach Drew Weber. “After that, we settled down and played a little better. We scored 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning by capitalizing on some  of the mistakes made by Todd County. We did not hit the ball all that well but we found ways on base and used our speed to steal nine bases,” said Weber.

The coach said the team is happy to advance to the next round “We will have to clean up a few mistakes in order to keep advancing. I’m confident we can and the boys are excited for the opportunity,” said Weber.

The Winner/Colome amateur baseball team split a pair of games they played in Mitchell on May 23.

In the first game, the Pheasants fell to Dimick-Emery 7-5. The local team bounced back and defeated Sioux Falls Brewers 13-5. Derek Graesser went the distance on the mound and also blasted a two run homer in the win.

The Pheasants hosted Kimball on May 26 and won 12-5.

Jaclyn Laprath of Colome ran in the mile and two mile at the state track meet this weekend in Rapid City.

She ran the two mile in 13:06 on Friday and ran the mile in 6:13 on Saturday.

“She ran hard and represented Colome gracefully,” said coach Charles Hosford. “I hope that we get to take more individuals like her to state in the upcoming years,” said Hosford.

The state meet was held at O’Harra Stadium on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines.
