Cowboys fall to Burke/South Central

Colome boys basketball team fell to Burke/South Central 61-48 on Feb. 17.

Coach Drew Weber said this was a tough loss since Colome lead most of the game. “We didn’t do enough of the little things to earn the victory,” said Weber.

Reed Harter led the scoring for Colome with  19 points, followed by Holden Thieman with 17 and Kelly O’Bryan with 10. Harter had 5 three point  shots.

Cowgirls fall to Kimball/White Lake

Colome girls basketball team played Kimball/White Lake in the Mitchell Corn Palace on Feb. 19.

Kimball/White Lake won the game 45-27. Mariah Kinzer led the Cowgirls with 9 points followed by Colby Taggart with 7 and Lauren Week with 6.

Taylor Hrabanek pulled down 10 rebounds.

This was the final game of the regular season for Colome as the district competition started on Monday, Feb. 23.

Sherman Signs at DSU

Dakota State University volleyball head coach Amy Veenhof announces the signing of Tawny Sherman of Winner.

Sherman will graduate from Winner High School and will continue her education and volleyball career at Dakota State University.

Sherman, 5-11 middle hitter, was an all-conference player in the Big Dakota Conference and all-tournament team in the Big Dakota Conference tournament. She was selected to the defensive player of the year with 39 blocks in 2013.

Sherman was an integral member of the Winner volleyball team that finished runner-up in the Class A state tournament in 2013. She accumulated a total of 448 kills including 128 kills during her senior season. She had 122 career blocks.

Warriors defeat Platte-Geddes

Winner High School boys basketball team improved its record as they defeated Platte-Geddes 63-49 on Feb. 17.

The Warriors led 28-17 at the  half and led 44-28 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Platte-Geddes narrowed the score as they pulled within six points, 49-43.

The free throw line was big in the final quarter for the Warriors. Sam Naasz, Lattrell Terkildsen and Nate Galbraith all hit big free throws. With 1:15 left in the game, Terkildsen made two free throws to give Winner a 59-48 advantage.

“We are proud of our student athletes for showing resolve and battling in a fun atmosphere,” said coach Brett Gardner. “Platte is a tremendous team and we were able to defend and rebound and come away with a nice victory.”

Henry E. Miller, 78

Henry E. Miller was born on Thanksgiving Day November 26, 1936 south of Dallas, SD at his grandparent’s home to Ed and Frieda (Knittel) Miller. Henry was baptized in the Lutheran Church as an infant.

The family moved south of Colome to his present home in the spring of 1940. He attended rural school at Rosebud School. Henry was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Zion Lutheran Church in Colome. He graduated from Colome High School in 1954.

Henry enlisted in the Army and went to basic training in 1956. He finished his time in the service at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City with an honorable discharge. Henry then spent three more years in the SD National Guard.

After returning from the service, Henry farmed and ranched with his dad and brother. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Colome and served on the Church Council. Henry was on the Township Board and Weed Board. Henry liked hunting and bowling and enjoyed stockcar races.

Henry passed away peacefully at his home February 15, 2015 at the age of 78 years.
